Ashamed of British fan last night

I never watch football as I hate it but I did watch last night because I am English and proud of my country. It was very exciting and at the end was thrilled with the result and the way the players behaved.

However, having seen that an English fan shone a laser in the Danish's goalkeeper's eye when Kane went to take the penalty kick I was ashamed.

If you look at the possession in the Semi-final and attempts at a goal, England had the edge. I don't usually rate them but they did the work to put them through. There were faults on both sides with fouling (Eng 10, Danes 21), hurling themselves to the ground, rolling about in fake agony needlessly, etc but I think the Danes definitely pipped England at the post there. The laser was a criminal act but unless the English Team set that up, I don't think you can accuse them of cheating nor should they be disqualified. That's a bit like me losing my driving licence because my neighbour was drink driving.

England have also been charged for booing during Denmark national anthem and fans letting off fireworks.

Kryptonite Fri 09-Jul-21 17:58:34

Disgraceful incident which spoilt the jubilation for me and I feel ashamed we have such morons in our midst. The England side/team (?) has been fined for it.

I wonder if the people on here saying cancel the match, ban all the fans, are the same people who would punish a whole class of children because a couple of them are naughty, just to make a point?

And this is coming from a Scot grin

I agree Alegrias
And with your other post.
I think we could do with some sense of proportion here.
?

It's irrelevant whether anyone likes or dislikes football.
That has nothing to do with it.

win I'm sorry you feel like that.
It seemed fair to me as that incident by a person in the crowd did not stop the penalty being saved.

Seems very reasonable and proportionate Petera ?

I'd ban the whole of Gransnet if just one had the temerity to disagree with me... smile

I went to my first football match with my grandfather aged 5 and was enthralled. Eventually life took over and my interest waned, but having always been part of households which were male predominated I have picked up a few bits of information along the way. In my view therefore:

I sincerely hope that the laser wielding idiot is discovered and punished appropriately, I don’t agree that all fans should be punished, for this deplorable act.

Unfortunately over the last few years it has become very noticeable that players do tend to fall at the slightest provocation when in the box (and out of it for that matter!). I also dislike the way commentators applaud players for “winning a free kick or penalty”. Do we presume that managers think similarly.

Before I go on, I am definitely not saying that two wrongs make a right, but……..

It has been reported albeit limitedly in parts of the media, that the Denmark goal (although excellent) should not have stood.
One would assume that players are aware of FIFA rules, but there is photographic evidence that Danish players broke Rule 13. “When 3 or more defending players form a “wall” all attacking team players must remain at least one metre (one yard) from the wall til the ball is in play”.

Yes, I do know that a metre is not the same as a yard, though obviously FIFA don’t. However either way they didn’t comply. I merely add this as further example of rule bending.

In the much quoted words of Jimmy Greaves “Football is a funny old game”

The laser wasn't the only disgraceful event. Booing at the Danish national anthem and letting of fireworks during the game also. Think fans should be banned from the final as punishment. Awful when Gary Lineker has to plead without fans to behave on Sunday. How much do these tickets costs, definitely more money than sense.

The fireworks were let off outside of Wembley Stadium, how is that the fault of the England Team or fans inside the stadium.

(There have been fireworks let off in my area each time England have scored and at the end of their games)

Absolutely disgusting. But I’m afraid typical behaviour from an English football hooligan. The game should be declared null and void

But it made no impact on the outcome. confused

Punish a whole football team and the country that supports them because one fan is an idiot?

Then re-run the match? Delay the final? Make all the people who have tickets for the final change all their plans? Maybe miss it completely? Or maybe just cancel the whole competition?

I think we could do with some sense of proportion here.

Alegrias I find myself in total agreement with you.

I just hope there is more vigilance and stewardship and no idiotic behaviour on Sunday.

Mollygo Fri 09-Jul-21 14:47:25

Using a laser was disgraceful and I hope they find the culprit, but looking for images of the event is really confusing. They show different things and who’s to know which is real and which is photoshopped since they all claim to be genuine.

vegansrock Fri 09-Jul-21 14:46:59

Some fans use the occasion as an opportunity to get hammered and hence behave badly . On Wednesday I walked by a pub at 2 pm and it was already packed with blokes in football shirts drinking and singing, goodness knows what it was like at 11pm. Sunday will be an all day binge opportunity. I’m all for having a good time and I admire many of the young lads in the team, but if fans start booing the Italian anthem, which is a good tune unlike ours, or booing our team taking the knee or whatever I shall feel my suspicions confirmed- there is a yobbish element in the crowd who spoil it for others.

Petera it would be like me suddenly commenting on a GN thread regarding estrangement (or any other subject I have no interest or knowledge of/in) and giving out advice and opinions.

No doubt this would be unappreciated and probably make some posters angry or upset.

I have never posted that they cannot have an opinion anywhere Petera please do not twist my posts to suit your own agenda.

In which case I apologise that I have misunderstood you and therefore just ask you what

"I get really cross when those who have no interest/never been to a game become armchair experts"

means exactly?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 09-Jul-21 14:18:20

I fully acknowledge that some topics on GN I have little if none at all experience or knowledge, so I do not post on those threads.

If I were it would be with a sorry I have no knowledge of this topic but, I think…

Corkie91 Fri 09-Jul-21 14:16:36

Makes me feel so ashamed the booing of the Dutch anthem, the laser incident, the person should have been found immediately and arrested
I would never attend a football match because of the behaviour of the crowd
