Ashamed of British fan last night

I never watch football as I hate it but I did watch last night because I am English and proud of my country. It was very exciting and at the end was thrilled with the result and the way the players behaved.

However, having seen that an English fan shone a laser in the Danish's goalkeeper's eye when Kane went to take the penalty kick I was ashamed.

Agreed Lins52 and GrannyGravy, we have a team to be proud of and we are, very proud indeed.

I have tried, GG13 to support the English football team. Not in this competition, but in the past. But I'm afraid I can't do it. Its not in me.

Last night there was a program talking about the young men who are playing and what a good manager Southgate is and I thought, yes, good for them, hope they do well. Then this morning there's Telegraph with its picture of Southgate, summoning up the warriors of old.... Rio(?) Ferdinand earlier this week talking about when England beat the Danes, how it wasn't really in question. Before the match had even started.

And with respect to DiscoDancer1975, England don't get to decide if the game is played or not, if they decide not to turn up, the game is void and Italy win. It's the attitude that England have more power and rights than they really do that gets some people's backs up.

So I won't be supporting England any more than I supported Portugal, or Switzerland, I'm afraid. I don't wish them ill but they're not my team.

Thank you for your reply Alegrias1

If Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland (or even Ireland because one nephew’s family live there) were playing Italy in the final I’d cheer for them too. Cheering Italy just because your UK team didn’t get through is a bit pathetic, but we will only hear if they did via the media, social or otherwise because that sort of thing makes a good story for some folk.

Did you see that lovely letter Harry Kane’s wife sent to him? He seems a genuinely nice guy with his feet firmly on the ground.

This group of players and manager seem much less diva-like than previous teams who usually got knocked out early, plus we haven’t seen lots about how much money their girlfriends spend on bags or whatever. Much more diverse and socially aware . I wonder if that Tory MP who called them “woke babies” and wouldn’t be watching has changed his mind yet. Gareth Southgate for PM!

I think you are addressing the wrong poster Mollygo!!

I think you mean Alegrias.

It's an 'Anyone but England' syndrome which some (not all) Scots seem to have developed.

They are welcome as many of us are starting to feel they'd support Anyone But Scotland with all the negativity that emanates from the Scots now.

Foxyferret agree, teams have always booed the opposition. The difference is that teams used to come onto the pitch separately, now they come out together, so the first opportunity is the anthems at games they’re played at. No reflection on the anthems, just the opposition, as in other sports.
I’ve always thought the slow hand clapping at Wimbledon a bit odd too, the crowd used to boo, but no one mentions that.

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 20:44:17

The slow handclapping at Wimbledon only occurs when a point is being disputed.

It’s long weekend.

Yes!

Thank you Saetana.

As someone who has used red dot optics I really can’t understand where the idiot with the laser had been sitting. Having been in several football grounds and watched several matches it would be very difficult to actually see a player’s eye, yet alone shine a tiny pen beam into it. I’m glad Schmeical has said he wasn’t even aware of it.

Mollygo Sat 10-Jul-21 22:17:24

Sorry Callistemon. I was agreeing with GG13’s comment at 14.06 but that was to Alegrias1 so you’re right.

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 22:27:04

That's ok, Mollygo

It's quite a weekend!
(I'm exhausted already from watching tennis)

From one of the Scottish papers this morning...

For Scots, it is finally the time to put the past behind us with this match. Ok they may have tried to subjugate our population, murdered our warriors, carried off our women and laid waste to our countryside, but that was over 1,000 years ago and now it is time to forgive and to support the Romans....

They'll never take away our sense of huuumouuur!

Mollygo Sun 11-Jul-21 11:38:31

I thought that was an oxymoron.

Alegrias1 Sun 11-Jul-21 11:39:20

What is Mollygo?

Missingmoominmama Sun 11-Jul-21 11:42:17

That doesn’t look like a laser though. Those pens shine a dot.

lemongrove Sun 11-Jul-21 12:03:54

Molly ?

Thankfully not all Scots think like SNP supporters when it comes to England.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 11-Jul-21 12:04:49

For those of you not au-fait with the off-side rule, here is a ladylike demonstration of it in action ?⚽️?‍♀️

lemongrove Sun 11-Jul-21 12:06:03

Missing ...some of the pics were fake, posted on SM.

Moving pictures. I thought that the diffuseness of the "dot" might be due to the movement?

Could have been one of these.

Fennel Sun 11-Jul-21 17:05:12

I haven't read the whole thread so this might have been mentioned.
If the Danish goalie had noticed the taser before the incident he should have alerted the Ref and asked him to stop play while it was investigated.
Is he allowed to do this?
There would have been a better chance to find the offender. Probably making a beeline for the exit.

Alegrias1 Sun 11-Jul-21 17:42:39

Laser, not Taser.

If he'd been tasered from the crowd that would have been a story.

MayBee70 Sun 11-Jul-21 18:16:06

Anyone seen the footage of fans in Leicester Square at the moment? Broken windows, broken bottles, cans, flares….
