Matty didn’t seem at all sorry for himself though - he was delighted for Tom in his interviews and of course he (Matty) still has many years ahead to become a diving legend.

Despite going up for an early night, I couldn’t resist watching the women’s triathlon on my phone in bed (memories of reading under the covers when I was little and supposed to be asleep!). Georgia Taylor-Brown’s comeback to silver after her flat tyre was just amazing, but the delight on Flora Duffy’s face when she won Bermuda’s first ever gold was a joy to see.

I do love the Olympics.

In Japanese a person's surname comes before their "first" name, I believe. Often happens in France, as well.

Can anyone explain to me how there are Russians at the olympics when they are supposedly banned?

Athletes aren't competing under the Russian flag because of a punishment handed down by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Originally, Russia had been suspended for four years of Olympic action, but in late 2020, that punishment was reduced to two years.

During that two-year period, athletes that weren't involved in the Russian doping scandal are still able to compete in Olympic competition. That's why there are 335 Russians competing in the 2021 Olympics. However, they have to do it as neutrals.

As a result, they aren't competing under the flag nor will the Russian national anthem play during the Olympics. They will, however, wear uniforms that incorporate the colors of the country's flag, much to the dismay of WADA.

I don't know quite how I feel about this - the doping was state-run so the country was guilty of cheating.
However, should those athletes not involved be penalised because they happen to be citizens of a country gfound guilty of state-aided doping? It doesn't seen fair that they should be banned.

I don't know the answer.

Edge of seat stuff in the archery. I’ve always found the archery strangely hypnotic. Does anyone know why the boxers don’t wear protective headgear? I thought it had to be worn in amateur boxing?

Unfortunately the athletes are casualties of their country's corruption. They should not have been allowed to compete.

I’m finding the whole thing really engaging. Sports I’d never normally think about have me shouting ‘well done’ and ‘oh no’ . Brilliant stuff.

TBH I am sick of it all as OH has the Olympics on from breakfast to bedtime! Sorry. OK when weather is nice and I can go for a walk or be in the garden ...

I was so pleased for Laura Muir, the Scottish middle distance runner. For years she has been 4th or lower in her major races. This afternoon she ran a real gutsy race to win the silver medal. The delight on her face was lovely to see.
