I'm not interested in watching sport!

I cannot be enthused by tennis. There! I've said it! It amazes me how much the media is obsessed by Wimbledon.

I don't watch any sport. I'm just not a spectator. My late husband would watch absolutely any sport. He would probably have watched tiddly winks or shove halfpenny if they'd televised it! I just find it stultifying boring watching other people playing sport. I'd rather play it myself although probably not team sports.

I played tennis and hockey at school. I loved athletics and was a good runner. I train in Shotokan karate four times every week. I've played badminton, snooker and table tennis. I just can't be bothered to watch other people playing sport. It leaves me cold.

Over to you!

I don't like sport either apart from some equestrian stuff and the Tour de France because my husband is a fan. I still don't understand why the BBC finds it necessary to put Wimbledon on two channels at the same time. I realise it's only for a short time so better bite my tongue.

grandtanteJE65 Tue 18-Jul-23 12:55:38

I don't care for sport either to do or to watch.

Formerly, I danced and still enjoy watching dancing of different kinds.

Right now the news seems mainly to consist of Tour de France and Wimbeldon - neither constitute News in my opinion.

Oh, thank heavens, I am not alone! When people ask if I have been watching and enjoying Wimbledon, and I tell them that, no, actually I hate it, they look at me as if I had admitted to strangling kittens.

Not so surprising that many on GN are not keen on watching sport, and yes, many have suffered from DH being glued to the telly watching it in all its forms. That obviously doesn't reflect the general trend nationally across all age groups, otherwise there wouldn't be as much blanket TV coverage as there is for so many events.
DH and I do have our favourites, which don't always coincide, but fortunately we have telly in more than just the one room, so all is well. He gets the "Big Telly" for 6 Nations and World Cup rugby, I get it for Wimbledon and any other of the big tennis tournaments. We both enjoy watching athletics, swimming, and skiing, so back in the same room then. As for football, cricket, motor sport and snooker, both of us would rather watch paint dry. It works for us. We were both fairly active participants in a variety of sports in our younger years, so that may explain our ongoing interest.

Nor me, totally agree with your views. My ex husband sport and watch any sport, me I prefer a comedy which I know sport can be some times.
You are not alone in this thought. I just wish all the TV broadcasting companies would get it in their heads that a vast majority of people Do Not Want to watch the zealous amounts screened weekly on our televisions!

I'm a big combat sports fan , the real stuff . Got hooked when the GC followed there dad into kickboxing at a very young age. Plus the week before Wimbledon I spring clean the house stock the fridge and freezer and hang a do not disturb sign on my chair

rockgran Tue 18-Jul-23 14:02:56

I really, REALLY don't care who can run, jump cycle etc. faster or further. I don't care about a ball or other item being kicked thrown or batted into a net, hole or any other receptacle with ever increasingly minuscule measurements. Yet so much money and prestige is invested in sport I accept that I must be in the wrong. confused

Siope Tue 18-Jul-23 14:09:48

Pjcpjc77, obviously there are large audiences, otherwise TV companies wouldn’t show it, let alone get into bidding wars for the rights.

BlueBelle

Can’t stand Wimbledon avoid it like the plague
Not keen on watching any sports unless it’s something special to get caught up in the moment like when the ladies won the football
As for cricket 😴

I'll watch something special getting caught up with like you say, that included bits of the Wimbledon finals. Oh, I will watch a top 20 20 over cricket game sometimes they are "fast and furious".

In the past I've gone with the flow with DH's and DS and watched bits and bobs as in go along to get along but now I live alone...the truth is out.

I am not a Wimbledon fan either, can't abide the grunting and groaning when they play. I remember being abroad one year and going to restaurant and the waiter saying " this is a nice table you can watch the tennis on the TV" , I asked to be seated on the other side well away from it thank you.
I have attended live rugby match but more to say I have been to the stadium and seen a particular side.

Don't quite see why NanaDana...
My 99 year old mother-in-law is glued to the tennis and was excited to see that (in addition) there was also some major golf thing going on!
She hardly has any time for us at the moment #busybusybusy grin

I’m of the same opinion as you Lizzy. I wasn’t brought up on sport nor TV for that matter as my parents preferred music. My DH shocked me the first year of marriage because of how much sport he watched. He’s the same as your DH was as in I’ve always said he’d watch ping pong if it was televised. I cannot stand even the sound of his horse racing or football, it drives me mad! Now he’s retired it’s even worse, he watches it all afternoon every afternoon mostly. The only sport I like is ice skating as I started skating at 4 years old until I was 17 when they closed the rink down. But my DH is a completely boring person because racing and football are the only subjects he can really talk to anyone about and as I’m not interested in any of it he’s learned over the years to not talk to me much or only about the news. Our DS is the same as me unfortunately for DH and shows no interest in sport only cars. I personally think they put far too much sport on TV these days. My Father in law even had 2 TVs side by side in the lounge so he could watch 2 channels at once which I found rather pathetic.

I like some sport, not sport in general but I do think that BBC3 is a wasted channel and could be dedicated to sport.
It must be annoying when favourite programmes are taken off both BBC1 and BBC2 to make way for sporting events.

Fine! You can be like that. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Many women are like that.

So your point was…? 🤷🏼‍♀️ You just wanted to get it off your chest?

It’s not going to change the nature of sports broadcasting any time soon since aggregated sports are a multi-gazillion $$$ and nation-loving industry.

Who doesn’t love a hometown team or Olympic favorite? Well, I guess not everyone. (I do have friends like that - they don’t get invited as much to certain gatherings… it can be fun!)
Gooooaalll!

M0nica Tue 18-Jul-23 17:25:18

Our sport is racing to turn off the tv should any sport ever come on. For me, quite simply, sport is something you do, not something you watch.

I have always been physically active. I have been a swimmer and sailor in my time, but, as far as I am concerned watching someone take exercise, of any kind is ineffably boring.

polly123 Tue 18-Jul-23 18:03:40

Absolutely bored by all sport. So glad when they are over and normal programmes don't keep getting delayed.

DamaskRose Tue 18-Jul-23 18:49:56

Tennis, rugby union, golf, 20 20 cricket, athletics, cycling (TdF), I love it all! 😊

Casdon Tue 18-Jul-23 19:00:19

I enjoy football, athletics, even a bit of snooker. I’m with Gundy though, it’s a bit so what. I never watch soaps, which I know many people are addicted to, to my mind they are a depressing waste of time - and at least in sport somebody wins at the end.

SueDonim Tue 18-Jul-23 19:19:31

We’re twins, NotSpaghetti! grin

I’ve just discovered some of our roads are going to be closed for four hours next month to accommodate a cycle race. That means I won’t be able to get out to get my GS from nursery that day - what I am supposed to do about that?? It annoys me when someone else’s sport infringes on other people.

Another gripe is armchair sports experts. So many friends, who last ran anywhere when they were in primary school, suddenly become all-knowing sports commentators on social media etc. 🤣

LucyLocket55 Tue 18-Jul-23 19:20:02

Some tennis is good. Fantastic men’s final last Sunday but generally, apart from horse racing which I love, most sport is a turn off for me.

Jannipans Tue 18-Jul-23 19:44:17

I also hate watching all sports (though happy to participate in some). What I also hate is that TV programs that I regularly watch get moved about to accommodate it!
Why can't they just have 1 or 2 Sports only channels and leave the regular programme schedules alone?

Northernlass Tue 18-Jul-23 22:14:08

I'm the same lizzypopbottle! It's utterly boring! Much better to get personally involved with an activity.

I let out a whoop when the Daniel Andrews announced today that Australia won't be hosting the Commonwealth Games; it's far more sensible to redirect the money to regional housing and sporting infrastructure.

Thank goodness Gardeners' World will be back in it's usual spot this Friday!

lizzypopbottle Tue 18-Jul-23 22:56:26

I love karate but I don't even watch that for entertainment. I will watch the occasional instructional karate video on YouTube but only to learn something. I admit I don't spend much time watching anything. My TV is virtually redundant. Oh! What a hypocrite! I'm watching the current series of the Great British Sewing Bee! (Mind you, it couldn't be described as sport although it is competitive to some extent.) I usually forget to watch it at the scheduled time because I'm doing sewing! 😂😅 I watch it on iPlayer days late!

Wheniwasyourage Wed 19-Jul-23 14:22:59

Can't be bothered with watching any sport on television. I've never particularly liked team games. I do swim regularly though, and walk a lot.

When the Commonwealth Games were in Glasgow, we applied for tickets and what we got was athletics, which we had hoped for, and netball and gymnastics (the kind with the ribbons) which we hadn't. I found all of them really enjoyable when I was actually there and just not watching on a screen, but it hasn't made me want to watch any of them on TV since.
