A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

I watched Laver and Rosewall in the late 60s also Granny Somerset. Visited a lot over the years but now not so much sadly. Best two weeks of the year for me.

I am just hoping that Andy Murray makes his mind up in time to give one of the players who didn’t quite make it a chance to play.
If he pulls out of his first match after play has started I will be cross.

Sparklefizz Tue 02-Jul-24 10:03:16

I agree PamelaJ1. Even though I'm an Andy fan, I'm critical over this. He must know by now whether he can play and it's selfish and thoughtless to keep everyone hanging on.

Like two of the women did yesterday …

He's out, and I think that's probably a wise decision for his health.

Anniebach Tue 02-Jul-24 10:32:53

Agree and I didn’t want to see him unable to finish the match

annodomini Tue 02-Jul-24 10:34:46

I've been watching Wimbledon since 1952 (apart from 5 years as an expat) when we saw 'Little Mo' on our tiny screen. What a thrill that was and I still feel it. I don't think non-Scots appreciate Andy Murray who may appear dour when he has no such intention. I hope that, if he can't play today, he does manage to partner Jamie in the doubles. I've always wanted to see those two (survivors of that terrible shooting at Dunkeld) playing together.

For his own sake, I'm glad he has pulled out of the singles.
He's been a great player and done us proud, so good health Andy in your retirement.

nanaK54 Tue 02-Jul-24 10:48:18

Has he said yet if he will play doubles with his brother?

J52 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:16:06

Yes he intends to play the doubles.
I’m glad he’s gone out with dignity.

Millie22 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:33:49

I sort of understand why he left it so late to decide but doesn't it give the organisers a hard time rescheduling matches.

Sad about Andy, I did wonder if it might be too much for him. Such a shame.

I imagine a Lucky Loser will be found. A couple of women got an unexpected chance yesterday when 2 pulled out.

JenniferEccles Tue 02-Jul-24 12:46:54

I’m wondering if even the doubles might be a bit too much for him.
I read this morning that his right leg still isn’t completely back to normal.
Whatever this fortnight brings though I am sure he will be hoping for enough of an improvement for him to take part in the Olympics later this month.

I really like Andy Murray despite his sometimes dour manner!
He is apparently great with younger players and always prepared to give up his time to encourage them and have a knockabout on the practice courts with up and coming players.

I think he has been misjudged over the years.

Crossstitchfan As you don't like Murray, I doubt you've watched the documentaries on his dedication, pain and commitment to rehab following major surgery. If you had, you probably wouldn't dream of implying that he invents injuries as excuses.

I think he's tremendous and has been committed to tennis since childhood. He's given tremendous entertainment over the years and I have every admiration for him.

Unfortunately injuries come to all sportsmen and women in the end - for instance Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. I hope that Andy Murray retires now for his own wellbeing rather than limping through a match in pain when he only had surgery last week.

Thankyou Sparklefizz, exactly what I wanted to say but I wouldn’t have been so measured. 🤬

Sparklefizz Tue 02-Jul-24 13:51:08

DamaskRose grin

PamelaJ1 Tue 02-Jul-24 13:51:25

I’m glad he’s decided not to play. He has a lot of life to live and better to live it as fit as possible.
I think sense has prevailed.

Crossstitchfan Tue 02-Jul-24 14:55:55

So Andy Murray left it to the very last minute to drop out of the singles. Never mind the extra work and worry he has inflicted on the organisers.
Very selfish of him in my opinion. He must have known before then.
Another reason why I dislike him!

Luckydip62 Tue 02-Jul-24 15:37:32

Who is Lucca ????!!!

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jul-24 15:39:13

A much respected poster who died.

Of course he knew before he told anybody, he just did it to annoy you! 😝

Millie22 Tue 02-Jul-24 19:28:33

Anybody watching Jack Draper?

NotAGran55 Tue 02-Jul-24 19:43:35

I’m watching the match Millie22.
