A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

Rekarie Mon 01-Jul-24 09:04:57

Oh, I love Wimbledon. Sad that the big names of old are bowing out. I can't see Andy getting far.

I wish Annabel Croft was the main presenter.

And the day Andrew Castle retires will make me very happy. I can't cope with his endless waffle.

Looking forward to Alcaraz on Centre, followed by Emma.

Grandmadinosaur Mon 01-Jul-24 09:11:41

Not sure about Andy. I really feel for him as he obviously wants to play and delay the inevitable as long as he can.
Did anyone watch the documentary about him on BBC on Friday evening? It was a lovely programme and bought back lots of memories. It made me quite emotional. I’ll watch it again when I get the chance.

No I’m not going sadly this year and envy anyone who is.

Thank you for starting this thread.

I wish Annabel was the main presenter too Rekarie she has such a serenity about her. I saw that Nick Kyrgious has joined the BBC reporting team. Mmm

Sparklefizz Mon 01-Jul-24 09:15:51

I'll be watching.
Andy hasn't even said he will be able to play after his recent back surgery. Apparently he will announce it later today if he feels he can.

There are 2 tennis documentaries available at the moment - one on Roger Federer on Amazon Prime about the lead-up to his retirement (when he cried, I cried! It was very emotional) and one on Andy on iPlayer now...... again, very emotional, and lots of old clips of him as a teenager, and with his Mum.

C'mon Andy. Also c'mon Jack Draper. I think we're in for some good tennis.

Grannybags Mon 01-Jul-24 09:57:28

Oh no not Kyrgios! Couldn't stand him as a player so hope his commenting isn't so annoying

C'mon all Brits!

Billy Harris was good at Eastbourne last week. I hadn't heard of him before

Jaxjacky Mon 01-Jul-24 10:00:49

I feel sorry for those who’ve travelled and camped to see Andy while he’s desperately trying for a swan song.

Sparklefizz Mon 01-Jul-24 10:15:57

Although I don't like Kyrgious as a personality, he's an exciting player to watch.

Nannylovesshopping Mon 01-Jul-24 10:42:54

Is Kyrgious playing this year or just commentating?

LauraNorderr Mon 01-Jul-24 10:48:51

Ixion I was thinking the same, hard not to when Wimbledon starts. 🥂 wherever you are Lucca.

Mojack26 Mon 01-Jul-24 12:42:05

Eh???? Who's Lucca?

Juicylucy Mon 01-Jul-24 12:56:14

Love Wimbledon I go every year with my daughter. We queue up from 6am it’s so much fun and we chat to people from all over the world. Then of course the tennis. You get to watch all the games on the smaller courts and see all the young up and coming players. You soak in the atmosphere and the English quintessential elegance around the courts with uniforms, flower displays, cream teas. Then of course the tennis on centre court tops the day.

Eh???? Who's Lucca?

A much respected and loved former member, sadly no longer with us
RIP Lucca

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 01-Jul-24 13:14:20

Much missed.

knspol Mon 01-Jul-24 13:32:17

Would like to see Raducanu do well after her disastrous last couple of years.
Most annoying person for me is Andy Murray, cannot stand the man, so self absorbed and always moaning about injuries, he should take a leaf out of Federer's book, understated, humble and a gentleman.

missdeke Mon 01-Jul-24 14:02:46

I like John McEnroe but I do wish he would learn how to pronounce players names properly! Obviously if we could choose a presenter, past or present =, it would have to be Dan Maskell.

Whitelaw12 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:07:50

Sorry but I think Any Murray is a drama queen. Remember him years ago at the Stella Artois tournament, falling flat on his face cos he'd got cramp. He's a moaner, and that awful opening of his mouth he does. I've watched for over 50 years and he should get on with it as Novak, Federer, and Rafael have done. Cant start Andrew Castle he's a motor mouth. Spoils the game.

Callistemon213 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:13:30

I wondered why Andy Murray was even contemplating entering this year having only had back surgery last week.

Apparently it was just to remove a cyst which was pressing on a nerve. Even so, the scar may not be fully healed yet.

Heather Watson is out, losing to her doubles partner apparently.

nanaK54 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:13:50

I'm in!
Currently watching Alcaraz.
I will tolerate anyone in the commentary box with the exception of the absolutely loathsome Andrew Castle.

DamaskRose Mon 01-Jul-24 14:22:49

Federer was almost entirely free from injury during his tennis career so he had little to “moan” about. He was a beautiful tennis player but, imo, a boring man.
Kyrgious is commentating at the moment and so far so good. Agree about Annabelle Croft, very measured, self effacing and knowledgeable. But, I know I’m in the minority 🙃, but I like Andrew Castle.
Apart from the Brits I’m backing Alcaraz and Jabeur.

mabon1 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:24:15

I wont be watching one minute of Wimbledon.

mabon1 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:25:13

He wants the dosh and is a show-off.

ixion Mon 01-Jul-24 14:33:32

Well, the secretary bird is giving Alcaraz a run for his money😆

Callistemon213 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:35:41

I wont be watching one minute of Wimbledon.

So you won't be posting, I take it.

bridie54 Mon 01-Jul-24 14:38:55

A confirmed Wimbledon fan here. I’ve had my strawberries already.
I’m a Scot who is not a great fan of Andy Murray as a person though he is undoubtedly a good tennis player .

I can’t really understand why anyone would do their body so much damage possibly affecting them for the rest of their lives for the sake of sport.

Right now am enjoying the Alcaraz Lajal match. Think it’ll be a long match.

I try not to let the commentators get to me but I do enjoy John McEnroe. My gripe is with the BBC who will abandon the coverage of a great match to watch any Brit who happens to be on court. I watch Wimbledon for the tennis not to follow only the Brits.
