A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

Crossstitchfan Mon 01-Jul-24 18:20:42

Ha ha! Happens to us all!

Crossstitchfan Mon 01-Jul-24 18:23:33

I rather hope it really will be a swan song! Sorry, have no time for him or his pushy mother.

Rekarie Mon 01-Jul-24 18:39:47

I like Andy. And he's getting on a bit now. All the older players suffer with injuries. Nadal can't even play despite want to. The stress they put their bodies through is incredible.

Agreed

Crossstitchfan As you don't like Murray, I doubt you've watched the documentaries on his dedication, pain and commitment to rehab following major surgery. If you had, you probably wouldn't dream of implying that he invents injuries as excuses.

I think he's tremendous and has been committed to tennis since childhood. He's given tremendous entertainment over the years and I have every admiration for him.

Unfortunately injuries come to all sportsmen and women in the end - for instance Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. I hope that Andy Murray retires now for his own wellbeing rather than limping through a match in pain when he only had surgery last week.

Millie22 Mon 01-Jul-24 18:41:57

I also wish Andy would retire. He has always been so difficult to watch but such a good player.

At least we don't have Boris in the cupboard commentating as there was some mention of him coming back.

Rekarie Mon 01-Jul-24 19:02:09

I think Boris will be back next year!

The tennis channel on sky has taken over my life but there’s nothing better than Wimbledon. Am I the only one who really likes Rublev?

Lizzie44 Mon 01-Jul-24 19:12:40

Love Wimbledon. Will be watching every day. Good to see Raducanu win this afternoon. Haven't had tickets for the last two years but have been many times over many years since the early 1970s. I wish Andy would retire gracefully rather than clinging on and struggling with injuries.

I like John McEnroe but I do wish he would learn how to pronounce players names properly! Obviously if we could choose a presenter, past or present =, it would have to be Dan Maskell.

Dan Maskell was a fantastic presenter, our older son was a keen tennis player and when he lived at home we would watch Wimbledon together as a family when Dan Maskell was doing the commentary, D M’s favourite expression was, “what a dream shot.” I also love Annabel Croft, she seems such a lovely, gentle soul, so sad that she lost her husband Mel Coleman so prematurely.

Like the football, I only watch the matches if I'm interested in the result. This year I'll definitely be following UK No 1 male Jack Draper. And Andy Murray. Though I do like to watch the famous ones play doubles, I think we see the more human side of them then.

Andy Murray was in the audience of real Mock The Week and Sports Relief years ago, and was a good sport. It's on YouTube.

I watch tennis all year round on sky tennis channel. I hadn’t realised there were so many tournaments but the slams are the best.

Wimbledon is only on the beeb of course and I think the coverage is dire. This match is on bbc 1 oh now it’s switched to 2 oh no it’s back on 1. I gave up recording matches because they flip flop on channels.

This year the red button which used to just lead straight to the other courts has changed to joining bbc iPlayer first. 🤬

Jules59 Mon 01-Jul-24 21:12:01

I really enjoy the doubles matches & the wheelchair matches too.
I wish they would show more over 35’s matches as they are so entertaining.
It’ll be a great fortnight though ! 🎾🍓

RosiesMaw Mon 01-Jul-24 22:02:17

How shallow am I, but my comment is about how smart the players and indeed our umpires, line judges and ball boys/girls look every year.
Compare with Roland Garros where they looked downright scruffy.
👏👏👏

ixion Mon 01-Jul-24 22:10:20

Don't think Nick Kyrgios 'does' smart, RosiesMaw.

Dwmxwg Mon 01-Jul-24 22:37:55

Just home from a brilliant day at Wimbledon. Great seats on Court 1. We watched all three games and soaked up the atmosphere. A treat to have the roof on for the last set of the day.
All the staff were so friendly and helpful and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Well done to the organisers, great experience

Priceless, ixion

Well, the secretary bird is giving Alcaraz a run for his money😆

Brilliant ixion. I had quite an urge to get hold of some scissors whilst watching Lajal.

Sorry but I think he’s a drama queen and find him very hard to watch.
I think it’s time he retired! Then I might start watching Wimbledon again.

Bellasnana Tue 02-Jul-24 06:39:16

I found Lajal’s coiffeur very distracting!😄

I was very disappointed not to be able to find Sinner’s match on any channel (not even the Italian one which usually shows their own players’ matches).

Can’t believe they showed a boring (in my opinion) women’s match and not the World No.1. If it was on iPlayer or the Red Button I don’t have access to those. Even Tennis Channel wasn’t showing it live.😞

Lots of slebs.

Dame Floella Benjamin
David Beckham
Sir David Attenborough
Sir Cliff - please don't let it rain😱

Any more?

Richard Branson
Katherine Jenkins
Oh to be a ‘sleb’ & get a free front seat 🤪

I thought Kyrgios did well commentating. Totally different to his bad boy court persona

BigBertha1 Tue 02-Jul-24 07:03:01

I'm late to this discussion already. Here's my two pennorth. I agree with many comments here. Firstly to say I don't watch all of it and watch more in the second week. I too would like Andrew Castle to find another job. Anna belle Croft to be the main presenter. I don't much care what Andy Murray does although I hope he does retire and pleasr, please not become a presenter. Hoping Emma does well...so watchable. That's it really. I have never been but would love to. No one to go with dadly.

NotAGran55 Tue 02-Jul-24 08:30:59

Will Andy play? Decisions,decisions..

I do hope so, because I am going twice next week, on quarter finals day and doubles day and it would be good to see him.

loopyloo Tue 02-Jul-24 08:40:01

My aunt took me to Wimbledon in the 1960s. I was amazed the grass was green because we only had a black and white tv.

GrannySomerset Tue 02-Jul-24 08:57:27

We used to be allowed to leave school early after exams and rushed to Wimbledon in school uniform complete with boater hats. Americans tended to leave by tea time and gave us their tickets so in the first week at least we could watch centre and No 1 court matches until evening. Couldn’t happen now! I saw Rosewall and Laver play.
