England v Sweden. What a nail biter!
I hate penalty shoot outs and thought it was all over (from behind my cushion) but they would not give in. I thought Sarina Wiegman looked shell shocked at the winning save!

Well Done Girls! Now the semis! ⚽️⚽️

Was an incredible game. Very tense. Well done Lionesses for bringing football home 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Wonderful. So pleased for them. They just never gave up. Well done Spain as well. As DH said there were no losers. DH prefers women’s football.

Watching England play in big tournaments is always nail biting. I enjoyed this game, despite feeling after ten minutes that we’d be lucky to beat Spain. What a skilful team Spain is. Our women were fantastic. They upped their game, played like a team and never gave up. By the penalty shoot out I was so proud of them and watching the penalties made me even prouder. I liked the women talking of being proud to be English. I loved the lack of unnecessary drama (men take note)
What a great team. What a manager and her team.

Wasn’t Prince William great? So warm and genuinely proud, hugging players with such a happy response to their success.

After listening to her interview all I can say is Sarina Weigman is such a classy, gracious lady. The men's team could do with her managing them aswell.

Noooo!!!

Let them find their own.
She’s ours! 😂

I think Sarina Wiegman should be PM

She is amazing isn't she? Yes, what a finish and it could have gone the other way too. B R A V O.

Agree, women's football is much more fun to watch.

Yes, hugging being the correct (English) way!!

This is unbelievable. Apparently Lucy Bronze (whose middle name is Tough - honestly!) played the whole tournament with a fractured leg. She must have been in such pain.

shock

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Jul-25 09:24:01

After the news of Bronze's injury, her former England team-mate Ellen White told BBC Sport: "I mean this in the nicest way but she is not human.

"I love her and adore her, but she is proper England.

"To say she has just won a major tournament on a fractured tibia, that is not normal. That pain must have been insane and she smashed that ball in for the Sweden game.

"Fair play to the girls for crediting her. That is true of Lucy Bronze, she will give everything to play for England and win for England as well."

Well done the Lionesses, so good to watch.
I can't believe the comments on social media saying the Lionesses wouldn't have won if they had to play against men. Sad and such bad form.

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 10:10:04

I’ve been surprised but I shouldn’t have been by the misogyny on various Facebook threads.
Before the match a man on our village group posted he’d put the flag out for the ‘ladies’ team. The photo was of a tea towel. The response - a laughing emoticon from a woman . I ignored it as I have some disgusting comments from men under news items. Scary how threatened they are

merlotgran Mon 28-Jul-25 10:10:55

Sad and such bad form.

Were these comments made by men by any chance? 😂

It is sad and it is bad form, but if they’re saying that, they’re actually validating the fact that there should be women only teams, not invaded by delusional men.

Yes, it’s almost as if men and women are somehow made differently, isn’t it? hmm

It’s worrying how many middle-aged blokes with ample beer guts think themselves capable of easily outpacing the Lionesses.

Smileless2012 Mon 28-Jul-25 11:15:27

They were denied an open bus parade through London when they won in 2022. They're getting one tomorrow and rightly so.

wouldn't have won if they had played against men pathetic isn't it but maybe that would give the men a better chance as the men's England team has never won the Euros hmm.

Allira Mon 28-Jul-25 12:01:39

Well, DH thinks they're brilliant! A shining example to set to the male footballers, according to him.

But then, he's not middle-aged, hasn't got a beer gut and couldn't out-pace them 😁

Misogyny at its worst. Ignore the idiots. And yes, I'm Scottish - but I'm delighted for them. They put up some fight, so the win was very well deserved. My friend's daughter actually plays for the England ladies' blind football team (Scotland don't have one) and they often meet the Lionesses as they share a training ground - she says they are all lovely girls.

Sarnia Mon 28-Jul-25 12:20:51

Women's football is refreshing. No diving, no pretending you're injured, no arguing with the referee and no SPITTING!!!

Of course, it's sad isn't it when you can't be happy for others without sexism rearing it's ugly head.

Many of those youngsters in the team will still be young enough to play next time round.
So it could be a hat trick!

Mine’s just the same. He used to referee women’s games (not at this level, obviously!) and has a lot of respect for the way they play.

Fabulous!!!

WoodLane7 Mon 28-Jul-25 13:46:51

Well they have brought it home again, so a huge congrats ladies; in true England style they did it the hard way, shredding most of our nerves along the way - but its the final result that matters at the end of the day! Spain do not seem to have been very gracious in defeat.............

DamaskRose Mon 28-Jul-25 14:49:51

I’m not interested in football, men’s or women’s, but if people can’t be happy for them or can’t resist making stupid misogynistic comments it says a lot about them! 😡 We need all we can get to raise our spirits.

Never watch football. I did a few years ago have a look at a women's match and thought "oh good, they are not running about looking for praise". Didn't last long, they are following the men's game of congratulating themselves for doing their job and will probably be on the same obscene salaries as the men very soon.

I very much doubt that the women's salaries will ever match the men's.
I don't see anything wrong in them congratulating one another for playing well. It's a natural human reaction to be happy when something good has happened. Well, for most of us anyway.

That’s cheerful.

I say good luck to them all. They work hard, it’s physical, they get paid much less than the men, no fleets of rolls Royce’s and Bentleys or thick gold chains dangling from all angles. No names mentioned!

So well done ladies, you deserve all the congratulations.
