Will M&S ever learn?

This is the link to [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2321524/] a three page article in the Daily Mail today featuring Liz Jones modelling the new M&S range. It was headed: 'Can these clothes save M&S'?

Well the simple answer is no. The pictures that followed showed Liz Jones modelling clothes that even by M&S's recent abysmal standards hit a new low. The first outfit was the kind of outfit your aged grandmother wore to your wedding 40 years ago. Another outfit is the kind of dress sexy barmaids wore in Ealing comedies

Not only that M&S didn't even bother to adjust the clothes to fit Liz Jones so she is alternatively swamped by the garments or they touch her all over but fit her nowhere.

What finished me off was the sentence; 'She’s (the new design guru) also refusing to jettison M&S Classics, the range for women in their 60s and older, which is all pastel embroidered cardigans'.

I will be 70 in a couple of months and I have never ever worn a pastel embroidered cardigan and cannot imagine I ever will and if that is what Liz Jones and obviously M&S think is what women over 60 wear they might as well give up selling clothes now.

I thought they all looked absolutely ghastly. Liz Jones is not my favourite journalist but she is usually pretty accurate when predicting successful fashion trends. She looked really frumpy. I wouldn't be seen dead in any of it.

I saw the article and totally agree FlicketyB to use the term "looked like a sack of spuds" comes to mind for some strange reason.

Perhaps a professional model may have made them look better but I can't see myself rushing out to buy any of the clothes featured.

In answer to the OP question...not until they start listening.
How about some GNetters submitting sketches to M&S for consideration? I'm up for up.

Mishap Thu 09-May-13 16:08:11

None of that is my style - but they have lots of other things too which are. Personally I like Per Una.

Nonu Thu 09-May-13 17:11:51

Have to say I rather liked the stuff , good on you M/S
.
Belinda Earl reminded me of someone on TV, cannot bring the name to mind.

Hope this doesn"t start another tirade against Liz Jones , as there was a few weeks back , which got really venomous , IMO

sunshine still about

The only one I vaguely liked was the white affle dress.

I see what you mean by the Ealing comedy barmaid, Flickety! I really am disappointed with M&S clothes these days.

And as for pastel coloured embroidered cardigans....!!!

nanaej Thu 09-May-13 18:05:16

I think that M&S tries too hard to be all things to all women! Far to many different ranges! Per Una, Classic, Autograph, Weekend etc etc! The length on the garments in the link would be dreadful on me!

gracesmum Thu 09-May-13 18:13:53

Oh dear - I like that pink coat! (What is wrong with me?) I have also seen a TV prog on Belinda Earl and believe she has the know-how to do well, so I will have to just wait and see. In the meantime, my new Per Una cream straight leg trousers look very classy for £35 so I shall remain that sad person - the customer who won't give up on M&Sgrin

Eloethan Thu 09-May-13 18:17:31

I thought some of the outfits were quite nice - and I rather like Per Una - especially the jeans.

It's also very much about how you put a "look" together and accessorize. This is where I think M&S (and a lot of other stores) could do a much better job - showing how outfits can be mixed and matched, accessorized etc.

Ana Thu 09-May-13 18:19:19

I liked the pink coat too - but wouldn't want it in pink! Wonder if they do it in other colours....blush

nanaej Thu 09-May-13 18:22:14

Gracesmum my petite DD always finds excellent outfits in M&S!

I think I am the wrong proportions! Too top heavy as t-shirts/blouses too tight but trousers are too 'generous' in the hip area compared to my waist & I look as if I have jodhpurs on. hmm

merlotgran Thu 09-May-13 18:26:43

I like the coat but not the shade of pink. The dress is too short and looks like school uniform and as for the boots....hmm
I would feel very self conscious wearing the cocktail dress as it doesn't look like you're wearing any underwear.

gracesmum Thu 09-May-13 18:28:51

Ooh, merlot- you are naughty!! blush

merlotgran Thu 09-May-13 18:40:11

The white shirt and leopard print skirt is the outfit to take you from day to night?? Maybe if she ditches the boots for a pair of comfy slippers and pours herself a glass of wine grin

Riverwalk Thu 09-May-13 18:51:31

Doesn't look like Liz Jones - too much airbrushing there!

Pink coat looks nice and a good price; who would pay 159 pounds for a dull grey dress from M&S?

Tuxedo outfit is boring.

And as for the waffle dress!

Nonu Thu 09-May-13 19:15:40

Cheaper than others ,ie c.c , windsmor , planet . betty black , et al ..

Wish I could add more but in this neck of the woods , choice is somewhat limited .

sad

gracesmum Thu 09-May-13 21:10:44

Do you mean Betty Jackson Black, nonu?? I like her stuff as well as Phase 8, CC, Viyella and the "independents" Like Denny Andrews, Wall, Sahara, Grizas etc.

Nonu Thu 09-May-13 21:45:42

I was in a large store today and did buy a couple of pairs of linen trousers, a couple of tops and a long stripey shirt. There seemed to be way too many 'outstanding value' items, ie cheap and poor quality. M & S used to be great for plain, good quality separates which could be dressed up with items from more exclusive ranges.

The shoes are dire. Underwear is still good value. They have such a loyal customer base, desperate for them to offer the clothes that they will buy. My children wouldn't dream of shopping there for clothes, they need to concentrate on that loyal customer base - there's massive competition for cheap clothes, M & S should position themselves outside of that market and go back to quality.

Charleygirl Thu 09-May-13 23:07:56

Everything is made in China and I am not the slender, short Chinese female. I have given up buying shirts as I would have to buy at least 2-3 sizes larger before I could attempt to button them up.
Underwear is still good value.

Glad to think that I normally look a lot smarter than Liz Jones - even if I do wear 90% Per Una. grin What an awful selection of clothes! Why is Liz still lusting after black trouser suits that are soooo old hat? Personally I've always thought that one thing M&S do well is jackets. I've got some very nice ones, carefully picked out in the sales, all very well made with nice linings. I had nearly fallen out of love with Per Una - some of the colours have been vile and the fabrics cheap and nasty - but last week I found a very nice white top, plain cotton with just a little Per Una touch to make it look different.
