Any comments on Tim Walker's new book of photos of grannies? http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/gallery/2013/nov/13/the-granny-alphabet-in-pictures?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487#/?picture=422371330&index=7

'Blued' it for you! I will have a look now.

Not a smile between them! I don't look anything like any of them, but No. 3 reminds me of my maternal grandmother who died when I was a child.

Tegan Wed 13-Nov-13 15:16:34

Are they real people? Why aren't any of them wearing jeans??

BAnanas Wed 13-Nov-13 15:19:34

Picture number 3, granny in plastic rain mac. I always remember my maternal grandmother and her two sisters never left their houses without fold up see through rain macs and a head covering thing produced from handbags that snapped shut, a bit like the Queen's. They lived a life that always brought the constant threat of a shower, no matter how good the weather was! I don't know anyone who does this anymore, I certainly don't, I might take a brolly but that's it.

Thanks as I have no idea how to do this! grin

lucyinthesky Wed 13-Nov-13 15:24:34

...addressed to shysal!

Jeans Good God Tegan wash your mouth out, mine didn't even wear trousers. They would wear pleated skirts, well below the knee, sensible lace ups (flat of course) and cardigans over blouses or twin sets. In the summer they wore floral dresses and sensible shoes in a sort of off white colour. Makeup would be nothing more than lipstick and a touch of powder, and possibly a bit of scent dabbed behind the ears.

I got told off by one of my grandmothers for turning up to family function in jeans when I was about 13 or so, she was completely outraged. God knows what she would have made of Miley Cyrus!!!

Ana Wed 13-Nov-13 15:42:28

Mine were exactly the same, BAnanas! grin

And the lipstick was only applied with the little finger, so it was more of a smudge, really...

Aka Wed 13-Nov-13 15:45:29

Tegan wish there was a 'like' button, that was my reaction too!

Tegan Wed 13-Nov-13 15:56:36

Hang on; are they photos of 'our' grannies or [gulp] are they meant to be [gulp again] 'US' shock....

Riverwalk Wed 13-Nov-13 16:04:43

Tegan I'm afraid they mean US shock

Bloody cheek!

Aka Wed 13-Nov-13 16:07:14

I've had a great idea for fund raising ... A Gransnet Calendar. I'll be January, any others takers??

Aka Wed 13-Nov-13 16:08:00

We'll show 'em what real grannies look like!

Riverwalk Wed 13-Nov-13 16:09:24

As long as we don't have to show our front bottoms grin I'll be September!

Ana Wed 13-Nov-13 16:11:37

Good heavens, Riverwalk, perish the thought! grin

I'll be May. With lots of foliage...

Aka Wed 13-Nov-13 16:14:21

Perhaps we could team up with the Hunky Firemen's Calendar? blush

Stansgran Wed 13-Nov-13 16:15:31

I think a few of the gransnetters who are brave enough to show a photo would put that lot to shame .i got the feeling they were either made up ,acting out the authors view of Grans or making fun of old women. And I think the latter.

JessM Wed 13-Nov-13 16:20:35

Don't like the photos at all. They all look awkward, posed and un-real.

tiggypiro Wed 13-Nov-13 16:24:08

Can't possibly mean us. No. 6 looks a bit like my mother and she is 100 years old.

Ana Wed 13-Nov-13 16:28:07

Number 5 isn't even a photo!

tanith Wed 13-Nov-13 16:29:32

I don't think they are real either

Lindylooby Wed 13-Nov-13 16:31:24

I hope I never look like any of them, mind you I wonder which photo my grandchildren think reminds them most of me?..... that is a worry!

Riverwalk Wed 13-Nov-13 16:31:53

Tim Walker is meant to be a 'legendary Vogue photographer'.

He deserves a clip around the ears!

BAnanas Wed 13-Nov-13 16:43:12

I think our grandmas were the same vintage Ana.

I used to take one of my son's friends to school for a while when they were aged about 6 or 7. As I drove up to his house one afternoon to drop him off, his grandma who was staying came out to meet him. She was dressed in skin tight leather trousers and teetered along in stiletto heels. She definitely redefined "granny" for me!
