Do you wear leggings?

Warm, cosy and comfortable, leggings are very popular.
But are we too old?
How can we wear them without looking a fright??

Thanks Ana

I can't believe how warm my feet are in my Aquaboots, although I keep tripping over in them. I tripped on the way into the cinema then tripped on the way to the screen where our film was being shown. I explained the problem to the lady taking the tickets and each time I walked past her [I always seem to need to go to the loo part way through a film] she'd shout out 'lift your feet higher'. I still tripped blush.

Today cotton leggings, warm socks, sheepskin lined suede boots, tiered skirt, long tunic top. Totally comfortable and elegant too though I sez it myself wink

Tried on my new Gudruns (dress and warm jumper) and minibags gave me such a look! I said: "That bad?" and she said "Yes". I said "Oh good" and felt great smile

Hmm leggings, I haven't recovered from the time I stopped a perfect stranger and kindly told her that her "dress" had ridden up above her hips, only to be told "I'm wearing leggings" Eek!

Also I like to tuck my tummy in so I like sturdy fabrics around my waist to give me a bit of support. The GD is very keen on jeggings, hers are very thick and warm and they add a little substance to her skinny little legs giving her more pleasing proportions just right with a knitted jumper dress.

My DD likes leggings but she has very thin spindly ankles and shins so she wears hers with knee boots. She looks daft in shoes or shoe boots with them (IMHO).

I'm tall. My fear is that a jumper dress on me will show an unflattering section of flabby mid thigh out of proportion to the comparatively slimmer lower leg. If I wear leggings with a slim above knee skirt the thick opaque fabric makes my lower legs look chunkier than I like and I don't like the look with any of my shoes or boots. I prefer warm tights with flats instead.

I haven't learned to rock the leggings and flowing skirt look. I know some very stylish septuagenarians who dress warmly through winter with leggings on under full skirts and dresses, but somehow I can't work their magic.

I have some very stylish black knitted wool long johns with lace trims at waist and shin. They're absolutely blissful and really good looking on (shapeless as anything off the body) but although these would look great on show, mine are always a secret underlayer.

My Aquaboots arrived today. Wearing them with the leggings I bought for the gym round the house today it suddenly dawned on me that I used to wear very long jumpers. Has a sift through the wardrobe and there they are. Thank goodness I didn't throw them away smile. I'm actually going to wear leggings and a long jumper to the cinema tonight [trying them out under cover of darkness wink]. Also, wearing fur boots and leggings round the house I realised that the temperature was way below where it usually is and I wasn't feeling at all cold. Hopefully what I save in heating will pay for the boots. Might be able to move into an igloo at this rate...

Someone put up a code to get a discount on them; just looking for it. My Celtic boots had a narrow escape today. My dog is no problem with shoes, never touches them but we went out for the day and put dog in kitchen [where her basket is]. Thankfully yesterday I put my boots on a table just in case the dog found them; what she does steal and chew are fur hats of any kind. Got home to find dog wagging her tail at the front door, which means she'd got out of the kitchen [don't know how]. She really would have chewed my new boots had she found them shock.

Mamie mentioned Celtic Aqualamb boots, Aka, on 17th November.

Aka Mon 25-Nov-13 17:22:52

Certainly the weather for layers Ana. Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned Celtic boots...I've skimmed though but can't find the post. Anyone remember it or have I made it up?

I bought some today from Asda! They were by the bras...

As soon as I got home I put them on under the aforesaid jogging trousers, and they feel wonderful - lovely and cosy. Certainly wouldn't wear them as outerwear, though, even though you could cut off the little bow!

The S.O. told me I looked a bit 'odd' [nothing new there then] but I told him that it was because it was new'ish fashion wise and he needed to get used to it. I think I'll be able to wear them if I know I'm going to the gym but will still feel undressed if I wear them anywhere else. What the Asda ones don't seem to do is 'pull me in' [ie not enough lycra] so, if I do venture forth wearing some I need to get a pair that are more flattering. I'm going to get a thermal top next week I am going to Northumberland and, as a wet southerner I feel perished when I get north of Newcastle. Ana, the thermal things were by the nightclothes, so I assume I'm meant to sleep in them; they were in plastic bags and cost £6. I tried some 'jeggings' on and I looked bloomin' awful sad. I'm going to put on the thermal ones soon to see if they make me itch [which thermal things tend to do]. Years ago I was stood in a field talking to a vet and she said to me at the time that she never understood why anyone felt cold when they could buy thermals.

janeainsworth Sun 24-Nov-13 20:26:00

I bought my first ever pair last week, thermal ones from John Lewis, to wear to zumba and under trousers when we're out walking.
They look bnicer than I thought they would and I'm now wondering if I dare wear them with heeled shoes and a tunic dress too shock

annodomini Sun 24-Nov-13 20:17:25

I got the thermal ones from M&S to wear under trousers last year. They worked well.

Ana Sun 24-Nov-13 19:06:00

I had a look in our local Asda the other day for leggings - but they only had jeggings. Did you get the thermal ones from there too, Tegan? They sound like just the thing for me at the moment, though I'd probably wear them under the too-thin jogging trousers from M&S!

I'm really feeling the cold this autumn/winter - already confused

Tegan Sun 24-Nov-13 18:24:18

I've just bought some leggings from Asda to wear at the gym. I was well chuffed when I found some old leggings of my daughters that fitted me, only to get to the gym and notice that Mr Moth had found them first [blighter]. So I tootled to Asda. The throuble is I've bought some leggings and also some thermal legging things; I think the thermal ones are to wear round the house cause they've got a little bow at the top [and might be a teensy bit see through blush]. Feel very odd wearing them, though. Currently walking round the house with them [the gym ones]tucked into my Ugg type boots. If I venture outside in them I'll feel as if I'm not dressed properly. Is this something I'll get used to? Feel ever so warm, though smile.

Thanks Soop. only just returning to the pooter after having visitors. I'll look in a minute!
I had a couple of Per Una skirts of the sort you describe but, in a mad moment, donated them to a friend, now I want them back sad

soop Tue 19-Nov-13 17:04:13

OGM I managed to locate two pics of the type of skirt I enjoy wearing. One is 1st in the album and the second had gone into number 10 position. Don't ask me why! confused

soop Tue 19-Nov-13 16:43:14

OGM I shall find a pic tomorrow. Have been called away from pooter. Back whenever...grin

soop Tue 19-Nov-13 16:34:39

OGM Per Una do a lovely long tartan skirt [I've two] that fit well on the waist and hips and then flare in graduated layers. If I can, I'll post a pic in my album.

ShoeLover Tue 19-Nov-13 13:39:08

Oh yes, leggings can be for any age or shape! It's what you wear them with, some long boots and a long jumper would look fab!

Maggiemaybe Tue 19-Nov-13 12:42:06

Trying to pick up the leggings/weddings/Biba threads all at once:

I love my jeggings in various colours from M & S and have even grown confident enough to leave my well-over-12-year-old jegginged bum otherwise uncovered - it's not that unattractive a bum and my legs are probably still my best feature, so why not?!

And I bought a gorgeous sparkly black Biba handbag, complete with Biba logo in gold, from HoF for my DD1's wedding - only to find it was in the sale half price the week after. Still, it was worth it.

annodomini Tue 19-Nov-13 12:28:19

glass, you put me to shame. I have bought TWO presents so far!

glassortwo Tue 19-Nov-13 12:24:48

mamie great, I will have a look but it will have to wait until next year as I have just finished my Christmas shopping and I AM NOT stepping back into the shops.

thatbags Tue 19-Nov-13 12:10:33

absent, YES! Legginged bums should definitely be covered if the bum in question belongs to anyone over the age of about twelve (and even some of those would look nicer if they were better dressed).

Mamie Tue 19-Nov-13 11:48:02

My mother made mine. The fabric was a sort of daisy broderie anglaise and cost £5 from John Lewis. It was a very, very short mini dress and I had a daisy hat to go with it.

annodomini Tue 19-Nov-13 09:47:24

What a quick morph from leggings to weddings via Biba.
