tights or stockings?

Writing the jeans/skirts thread has reminded me that I find tights very difficult to get on these days, don't know the exact time it happened, one year all was fine, the next I was writhing around on the bedroom carpet [and I don't do much of that these days either] trying to get the blooming things past my knees.I am fairly short [and round] and if you buy ex-large they expect you to be about 5/10",wonder if Queen Victoria had this problem?!
So, any of you found good quality tights that are not a struggle and actually fit? Am not a big fan of stockings, though I wore some at a wedding last year as it was hot.

I wear "Hold-ups" !

Nonu Fri 10-Jan-14 18:24:35

Like stockings without the fiddle-faddle of suspender belts !
Oh joy ! What a pain they were !

M&S tights fit me, the extra large ones.

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 18:28:30

Don't you have to keep hoiking them up, Nonu? grin

Think of a bank robber in stocking mask - the nose goes to one side, the whole face looks mishapen -- well, lady, that's what your bum looks like in tights!

(I'm old enough to remember a time before the wretched things!)

feetle I see from the local news that your area is seriously flooded - hope you're not affected.

I'm shortish (5' 5") and wide and struggle to find tights that fit. I struggle to get them on but hate it when they stop just above my knees! Even the ones labelled extra large hang somewhere low and uncomfortable. I've tried hold up stockings on posh occasions but they've generally let me down (literally). Ordinary stockings were great fun until not too long ago but nowadays I live in trousers but would love to find tights that actually fitted me! Any suggestions welcomed!

Nelliemoser Fri 10-Jan-14 20:12:42

Mollie if you think you are shortish at 5' 5" where does that leave me at 5' 1". wink

I usually wear trousers unless it is a hot summer's day - then wear a skirt bare legged. I can never get comfortable in tights but mainly because I hate being gripped round the waist. Also they make me feel overheated. I always snip the waistband. I've tried holdups but they just don't! sad

feetle, most women wear tights under some other item of clothing - we don't particularly care what our bums look like in tights otherwise...hmm

Lona Fri 10-Jan-14 20:29:08

Of course men look fantastic in whatever they wear hmm

feetlebaum do hope that wasn't a personal message to me?! shock
About the hold ups ; have tried hold ups and they let me down badly, think they only work if you have slim thighs.I am only [barely] 5/2" Mollie I hear what you are saying exactly same for me. Iam64 you are tall so the ex large will be fine for you [lucky you.]

I remember going on a romantic weekend with Mr H for our anniversary. I wore a lovely little black number, and just to up the ante, wore a of pair silky, black hold-ups.

We had dinner, and I slipped off to the ladies. Coming back, I had to walk across a vast dance floor (thinking how lovely I looked, incidentally), when I realised that said hold-ups were heading south. By the time I reached my seat, they were puddled round my ankles, and Mr H was in tucks of laughter. Never lived it down! Tights for me ever since! smile

Went to Scotland a couple of years ago, wearing, for a change, a skirt and hold-ups. One of the hold-ups didn't do what it was supposed to do and I was reduced to walking round Waverley Station, desperately hitching the thing up, every few seconds, until it was time to catch my train north.

@Riverwalk - Thanks for your concern. Some of our roads are closed, mostly on the Surrey side of the Thames I think. Our village green is under water, but so far my feet are dry! I started out for an appointment at the medical centre in the next village and encountered a road closed sign and had to make a large detour, but still got there in time. I noticed a lot of drain-clearing vehicles being deployed while I was out...

Neither! - ever!

Charleygirl Fri 10-Jan-14 22:17:33

I found in the days when I wore ex large tights that BHS fitted me the best. Now, because of surgery I have a grossly swollen ankle so I now just wear socks whch are wide enough for me and M&S and Sainsburys come up trumps. I only wear trousers for that reason.

tanith Fri 10-Jan-14 22:22:28

Neither! not ever, I wear leggings (no feet) with boots otherwise its bare legs for me. Can't abide the things.

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 22:24:25

Oh, I couldn't wear boots with bare feet!! Or most shoes, for that matter...

Charleygirl Fri 10-Jan-14 22:26:04

Nor I, hence the socks.

Soutra Fri 10-Jan-14 22:57:39

Hold ups are OK but can make your thighs a bit raw if they cling too tightly - alternatively the Nora Batty effect can be the result if they do not grip tightly enough.grin
Can anybody explain the man thing about stockings and suspender belts?

Deedaa Fri 10-Jan-14 23:00:30

Am I the only one wondering how you have such comprehensive knowledge of women's bums feetle grin I have an awful feeling that I shall remember your comment every time I put my tights on! I remember life before tights well - I'm still not sure how we combined stocking tops and bare thighs with skirts that only skimmed the bum. I do know that you just NEVER bent over!!!

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 23:00:40

feetlebaum?

Tegan Fri 10-Jan-14 23:05:25

I have a tights problem as well. 5.4 but with legs like a rugby player. Never quite sure what size to get as I have to have large to fit the legs but they're then much too long. When I do find a pair that fit me I always forget where I bought them from and in what size.
