tights or stockings?

Writing the jeans/skirts thread has reminded me that I find tights very difficult to get on these days, don't know the exact time it happened, one year all was fine, the next I was writhing around on the bedroom carpet [and I don't do much of that these days either] trying to get the blooming things past my knees.I am fairly short [and round] and if you buy ex-large they expect you to be about 5/10",wonder if Queen Victoria had this problem?!
So, any of you found good quality tights that are not a struggle and actually fit? Am not a big fan of stockings, though I wore some at a wedding last year as it was hot.

Ah well, for chaps... stockings were the almost knee-length socks soccer players wore - and according to the programmes when I was a nipper, they also wore knickers.

they have shape wear for men in Asda!

@Soutra - For one thing, we mature gentlemen were playing the great game long before the dreaded tights arrived, and I believe one's tastes are formed early and don't change very much with the passage of time. Then in the early sixties, tights for little girls arrived - opaque, of course, in primary colours - I can remember my step daughter, then five, looking up at me in a perplexed way and saying plaintively "I don't UNDERSTAND my tights" which were on a terrible tangle somewhere around her knees. But I digress.

Stockings came with a welt, known to chaps as the 'giggle strip'. This was because it was reckoned if you got past there you were laughing...

Tights were an abomination, not unlike those roll-on things, with the holes in, that were advertised on the back of the Radio Times, near the garden sheds. They were the 1960s version of the chastity belt. the great thiong abut stockuings and suspenders was - they weren't ruddy tights

PS: My wife #1 sometimes wore opaque black tights and a sweater with a belt - it was a beatnik style.

@Annodomini -- As a chap, I have to say that the erotic effect of black underwear is highly overrated... white satin, now.... another story!
Excuse me while I cool off...

I've found two pairs in a sale that fit quite well. Hudson I think.
Any way I wear M&S shapers over them and they stay fixed. Still I only wear them for special occasions with my favourite skirt and boots.

Not at all CAZ
wink wink

Ariadne Sat 11-Jan-14 16:15:48

Neither, for years and years. Can't stand them.

cazthebookworm Sat 11-Jan-14 11:15:21

I think it's the "Lads Mags" that always displayed women in stockings and suspender belts that are to blame, portraying a "certain image!" I always had to wear them to please my husband, and dammed uncomfortable they were too. Thank goodness I don't have to please anyone these days!! I hope that's not "too much information!!" blush

annodomini Sat 11-Jan-14 11:08:41

Soutra. that's a question that has always puzzled me. Likewise the male obsession with black stockings and undies - for women, that is.

ANA
NO!
LAUGH!

MOllie, in the days when I wore tights I always found BHS to very good , I used to wear a shade called Paola , I think , anyways whatever , they were a good colour !

celebgran Sat 11-Jan-14 10:06:48

Hold ups for me as choice but me too havmeerienced the fall down effect! This winter asda George ones only £4 pack 2 they stay up wonderfully really,

I am tall as well as plumpish and also quite pleased with marks ex large.
Hope that's some help!

Last time I wore tights was last September when I had to look respectable for DSs Wedding and they where so uncomfortable all day,I had visions of me resembling Max Wall as I had to wear really high heels hmm normally on a daily basis I either wear jeans/socks or leggings & socks as I find tights very uncomfortable,I have been known to wear hold ups but not a fan as they tend to slip and I always forgot the "no body moisturiser" instructions on the packet hense they never stayed up properly.I have to agree re BHS tights though as their sizes always seemed spot on when I had to wear tights when working.

Charleygirl Sat 11-Jan-14 09:18:31

Tegan try BHS ex large and I think that you will be pleased. I am 1" taller and found these were ideal for my shape.

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 23:05:52

Crossed posts, Deeda - I was suggesting that feetlebaum would probably be only too willing to answer Soutra's question.

(But we did always wear knickers as well as stockings/tights, didn't we? That's why I don't understand all the fuss about tights when they first came in)

Tegan Fri 10-Jan-14 23:05:25

I have a tights problem as well. 5.4 but with legs like a rugby player. Never quite sure what size to get as I have to have large to fit the legs but they're then much too long. When I do find a pair that fit me I always forget where I bought them from and in what size.

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 23:00:40

feetlebaum?

Deedaa Fri 10-Jan-14 23:00:30

Am I the only one wondering how you have such comprehensive knowledge of women's bums feetle grin I have an awful feeling that I shall remember your comment every time I put my tights on! I remember life before tights well - I'm still not sure how we combined stocking tops and bare thighs with skirts that only skimmed the bum. I do know that you just NEVER bent over!!!

Soutra Fri 10-Jan-14 22:57:39

Hold ups are OK but can make your thighs a bit raw if they cling too tightly - alternatively the Nora Batty effect can be the result if they do not grip tightly enough.grin
Can anybody explain the man thing about stockings and suspender belts?

Charleygirl Fri 10-Jan-14 22:26:04

Nor I, hence the socks.

Ana Fri 10-Jan-14 22:24:25

Oh, I couldn't wear boots with bare feet!! Or most shoes, for that matter...

tanith Fri 10-Jan-14 22:22:28

Neither! not ever, I wear leggings (no feet) with boots otherwise its bare legs for me. Can't abide the things.

Charleygirl Fri 10-Jan-14 22:17:33

I found in the days when I wore ex large tights that BHS fitted me the best. Now, because of surgery I have a grossly swollen ankle so I now just wear socks whch are wide enough for me and M&S and Sainsburys come up trumps. I only wear trousers for that reason.

Mishap Fri 10-Jan-14 22:09:18

Neither! - ever!
