Ive been invited to Edinburgh for Burns night.I'll be going to a banquet as well. Would I be wrong in wearing my Welsh tartan?

thatbags Thu 23-Jan-14 14:27:33

It's as Celtic as the scots isn't it? So I don't see why not . I'm envy of you. I'll be eating me haggis with me mashed neaps and homemade whisky sauce all on my own.
I'm wondering about trying to make Cranach?
But then I think of the calories!

Agus Thu 23-Jan-14 18:58:48

Och Galen. A wee bite of Cranach is compulsory surely. It's only once a year after all. Slainte wine

Fairhair Slainte to you too. Hope you enjoy your Burn's Supper in Edinburgh.

Fairhair Thu 23-Jan-14 18:59:29

Taking example from those two exemplary examples of Scottish etiquette, Russ Abbot and Rab C. Nesbit, I would, if invited to a Burn's Night Supper, turn up sporting a large black Tam O'Shanter, huge orange beard, string vest and vast kilt. I'm sure the bard would have approved. In a parody of the words of that other fine example of Scottish bardery, the Great MacGonagle, I offer the following Burn's Night Toast:

Dip your spoons, Dears, in this sea of tears
And toss that dross out with your fears
For tonight we toast the good old ways
Until we burst clean thru' our stays!

Slainte!

Fairhair Thu 23-Jan-14 20:32:54

Slainte! I'm sorry,Agus! The eyes see what the mind wants it to see! grin

It must be 30 years since I danced the eight some at a Burns night! [sigh]

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance for ever and a day!

rosesarered Fri 24-Jan-14 09:58:19

Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low,
thru the streets in ma kilt I go ....... smile

Galen Fri 24-Jan-14 10:45:13

The lasses they all shout
Hello! Donald where's your trousers?

soop Fri 24-Jan-14 12:40:25

Galen the eight pupils of our local village school treated us to an early Burns lunch just the other day. Haggis, neaps and tatties and, for pudding we had Cranach. It was delicious. They also wrote humorous poems "in the style of Burns"...I liked the one 'To a wellie' and one 'To a teapot' very much.grin

"Oh on the night when we remember the greatest Scottish bard
It is a pleesure to welcome some whose journey might have been hard
And it would take the wind right out of my sails
If I did not recognise the presence of our friend from Wales
Which is a land of melody and song
So when the singing starts she is unlikely to go wrong
And as to dancing show a clean pair of heels
When performing Strip The Willow or the Eightsome reels
Her skirt is not of our Scottish plaid
But of Welsh woollen is it made
She is young and braw and might get frisky
When partaking of our finest whisky
So raise your glasses one and all
To Grannies from all the corners of our beautiful Unitd Kingdom whether England, Ireland Scotland or Wales
(breath) And welcome to our Highland Ball." grin

My favourite poet! I keep his poems by my chair for when I feel down.

A Burns night dedication...
Och, troch ma docket, an' doun ye braes
I dinna ken yer Sassenach ways
I'll drop ma hassocks in yon sweet burn
With neeps and tatties then adjourn
Topped off wi' some of Tunnock's best
I'll don ma finest holy vest
Wi' kite full blown and pibroch grand
I'll tak to the floor wi' Jimmy Shand
And take Matilda round the waist
We'll rock and reel around the place
An' glide an' float o'er a' the floor
Remembering well the times of yore
When hair was long and waistline trim
And nary a trace of fat or flim
So ha' a guid one, one and aw'
And lookit forward to many more!

Anon.

Burns again!
Great Captain o' the Puddin' Bowl
Tonight we praise ye, one and awl
An' all lift up a steaming platter
In praise of o' all that we can batter
From Haggis to the Bars from Mars
In our fair Land we see the stars
And on this festive Burns night seek
Those things of home which do so reek!

Anon.

Part of my reply for the lassies (heavily plagiarised from an unidentified source!) at our Rotary Burns' night last Wednesday (impeccably organised by Theseus). I did include some Burns too!

"For the bonnie flow'r of Scotland
Is one that never wilts.
And it makes a lassie say with pride --
"Down with trousers! Up with kilts!"

I have an over the shoulder plaid in Gordon tartan, which is T's family tartan. When he retired, his PA organised his retirement party, on a boat up and down the Thames, with a piper and with every table draped in Gordon tartan. I have masses of the stuff!
