Earrings

I had my ears pierced in my twenties and wore earrings until a few years ago when I got bored with them.

Recently I have decided to start wearing them again (I had to force an earring through healed over skin on one ear).

I've noticed that a lot of women my age are still wearing danglers but I think these are now a bit dated. I find I am favouring austere studs.

I wonder what other Gransnetters think.

Hey Petallus

I love danglers, and like scarves round my neck, I've continued to wear danglers whatever the current fashion. My view is I can wear what I like. I've just bought a pair of glorious danglers in Greece. I now only wear one ear ring in each ear, though I did enjoy the early 80's phase for several studs in one ear, and a dangler in the opposite one.

Go for it - choose the ones you like, and if it's studs, that's a good choice as well. I have some lovely studs for more formal do's, or if I'm wearing a chunky necklace and feel danglers would be too much

I've changed to studs over the last 10 years or so, too. I have lots of dangly ones which I used to love wearing, but some of them do look dated, or otherwise 'not right' on me now!

Ana Mon 02-Jun-14 13:58:40

(Mind you, I have studs of all shapes, sizes and colours, so not too austere! grin)

I like very small studs for everyday wear. I don't have many long dangly earrings - rather short drop ones of various styles. If I get bored with my already massive collection, I go on Ebay where you can find almost any style at very reasonable prices. It's one of my few hmm extravagances

I love earrings and always wear them. As to the style, it depends on what I'm wearing and how I have my hair. I didn't know they went in and out of fashion. X

janeainsworth Mon 02-Jun-14 14:39:24

I agree J52 I don't think danglers are dated at all. There are some fabulous ones in the Plumo catalogue that came today envy
I just find some of mine a bit heavy sometimes.

I love earrings too and usually pick up a "treat" (or two) when I am passing Accessorize an accessories shop. I often wear earrings that don't necessarily match my outfit - like bright pink ones with a red dress grin

However, I stopped wearing danglers when a beautician said to me (I had danglers on that day) that "you want to avoid anything with vertical lines after a certain age" ... plus I would prefer to avoid this

I get my love of earrings from my mother, she used to say she felt naked without them, and we took her favourite pair off after she died.

I had my ears pierced the week I got my first pay packet. Mum didn't approve so she refused to pay.
I mostly wear hoops but sometimes studs. I have a short neck so never wear danglers.
The hoops I have in now were a Christmas pressie, I put them in on the day and haven't taken them out since. Anyone else sleep with hoops in ?
They are gold smile

Danglers or studs, I wear either quite happily depending on what I am wearing and how I have my hair - which is quite long and curly, so I need fairly large earrings when it is down otherwise they don't get seen!

'Austere' earrings are for going shopping in. What I think of as functional, everyday jewellery, usually silver. In the evenings I like quite colourful matching earring and necklace sets, maybe murano glass, although I also wear them if I am going out for a nice lunch or something.

DBH buys me a set from here for xmas every now and then. So not too dangly.

petallus Mon 02-Jun-14 15:30:21

I'll have a look at that site in a minute.

I wonder if whether or not one wears glasses makes a difference.

I saw a pic of the Queen once, glasses, crown and earrings and it looked very cluttered.

Oops - wrong link.

I like Plumo, too! Also Pia.

I have an earring fetish. blush He is threatening to buy a cupboard just for earrings. I even have a special going-away earring travelling case that holds 32 pairs!

janerowena Mon 02-Jun-14 15:34:44

I wear glasses when I am singing, and I know what you mean, I am very careful which glasses and which earrings I wear. I don't have to worry about the tiara though. Not for lack of trying, but he wouldn't buy me one when they were in fashion!

petallus Mon 02-Jun-14 15:35:03

It's more or less the same earrings on both links janerowena. They're lovely aren't they and relatively inexpensive.

janerowena Mon 02-Jun-14 15:48:27

Is it? That's good, I'm not with it today. Yes, they are all very individual and often they are the only pair like it, so no worries that you have picked up a pretty pair from the carousel at Sainsbury's and your friend has the same set! Or Pia, whose earrings are roughly the same price.

I wish the necklaces were a little longer, but I have solved that with necklace extensions.

janerowena Mon 02-Jun-14 15:50:10

As for current fashion - I never did throw out my eighties earrings. Some of the less flamboyant ones are perfect for now. I saw some on eBay advertised as 50s - no they weren't, I remember buying them in 1990!

petallus Mon 02-Jun-14 15:52:51

I have my mother's earrings from the 50s but they are clip on.

I can remember wearing those when I was much younger and having to take them off every few hours because they were pinching.

Grannyknot Mon 02-Jun-14 16:01:38

Jane those are lovely earrings (on the website). I can feel a spend-up coming on. I don't really count those as proper danglers (that weigh a ton).

Marelli Mon 02-Jun-14 16:25:15

Most of my earrings are dangley ones and I have lots and lots, though I tend to wear small hoops most of the time (and I do sleep in them). Was never able to wear clip-ons - they were so painful!

Tegan Mon 02-Jun-14 16:43:25

I've got more earrings than I care to think about [some of which I've never worn] but I end up wearing one of three sets, a black pair, an amethyst pair or an amber pair [the 1980's parrot ones are in a drawer somewhere; I refer to that as 'my Bet Lych period']. Because I tend not to wear them every day I do tend to struggle to put them in sometimes but find that putting a bit of vaseline on my earlobe helps.

glammanana Mon 02-Jun-14 16:54:35

I have loads of earrings all shapes and sizes they are mainly very plain,I wear a classic pair of pearl studs everyday and for something special a glittery pair of large studs,I find dangley tend to get caught up in my hair and then there is a fight with them at a night time to get them out.

Galen Mon 02-Jun-14 17:16:01

Diamond or pearl studs. Though I have one pair that are diamonds and pearls.
Looking at the moment for a pair of black opal ones to match the gorgeous ring my aunt has just given mr.

Lona Mon 02-Jun-14 17:28:00

I love earrings, or my efalump keyrings as my dgd calls them!

When I'm being smart I wear pearl or diamond studs, but when I'm feeling giddy they're dangly.

Galen envy I love opals, what a lovely gift.

annodomini Mon 02-Jun-14 17:47:35

Pearl earrings go with most outfits, I have several pairs of studs of different sizes and a pair of pearl drops that my parents gave me. Amethysts are my favourite stones followed by blue topaz. Can't afford diamonds sad except the fake kind!

rockgran Mon 02-Jun-14 18:24:58

I wear earrings to match my outfit even if I am just doing the chores. As a hobby I make a lot of jewellery to give to charity so I have plenty of raw materials. I hate to see a naked pierced ear! I must admit I favour studs these days.
