Here we go again - M&S woes

I was delighted to receive a clutch of "Friend and family" 20% off vouchers from M&S. Can't be bad, I thought, as I had seen a dark red duffle coat in the Sunday magazines and I liked the look of it.

All I can say is that whatever they pay their advertising photographers, it can't be nearly enough. What looked warm and inviting in the picture turned out to be heavy and stiff, with a zip that was hard to do up and an uninspiring mock-tartan lining.sad
So I thought I need some trousers - but the quality of the fabric was so cheap and dire they were rejected as well. A cardi? My granny wouldn't have been seen dead in what was on offer - dreary pastels, metallic threads, odd coloured buttons from Per Una (how many years have they been going on?) and dull, dull, dull styling.
So nothing new to add to previous threads lamenting the dearth of decent things from M&S - the only thing they seem to do well is their advertising!

I HATE their website!
I specify a size and colour and then when it displays, find only in a size 8 and I'm a 18/20!
What's the point of specifying?
I've given up with them

Recently I ordered a couple of bras on line with knickers and trousers for the gym. By the time I arrived at the paying off point, the bras were out of stock!

Katek Wed 17-Sept-14 23:15:17

I bought 2 identical bras online - one fits and the other doesn't even meet at the back!

Have never had a problem with their website until recently when 2 items I ordered were suddenly unavailable the next day. After payment had been taken, it was swiftly reimbursed.
I have some of the 20% off vouchers, does anyone know if they can be used for children's clothes?

GillT57 Thu 18-Sept-14 13:31:45

I keep getting 20% off vouchers and they just sit and moulder and go out of date. Don't know why I bother with the M and S credit card to be honest as I get all these vouchers and cant find anything to spend them on. I use the actual cash vouchers for food. I hate polyester and man made fabrics as they make me feel as if I am going into meltdown. Can only wear linen and cotton and wool, and despite the sometimes hefty price tag on ranges such as Per Una they are often nasty sweaty polyester. As for the Classics range......speechless.

I went to M & S Marble Arch today where unbeknown to me they were launching their new men's David Gandy (male supermodel?!) underwear and nightwear range with a personal appearance by the said model. I have no interest in him or his 'range' but what has really hacked me off is that for the past couple of months I haven't been able to buy the pyjama shorts that I usually buy for my DH,he is disabled and he finds these particular shorts the most comfortable to wear, but lo and behold I can purchase them today as they have been rebranded as part of the DG range but are now £5 dearer!

M & S just seems to continue to disregard and hack off their loyal customers.

And by the way David Gandy seemed very ordinary with all his clothes on!

The papers today are full, and that really is the word, of M&S men's underwear adverts. I found them quite off putting. I am also not quite sure who they were aimed at. Do men respond to these 'full' frontal adverts or are they assuming that women buy men their underwear?

Personally, I would not dream of buying DH any clothes. He is not a child and I am not going to buy his clothes for him as if he was. It means I live with his clothing decisions, even if I do not always like them and he has to live with mine.

Never heard of David Gandy, or any other male model come to that. I just glanced at the pictures in the advert and turned over as I found the whole advert so unattractive.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 19-Sept-14 09:32:47

If I didn't buy DH's clothes I think he would still be happily wearing stuff from the seventies, holes and all. He hates shops. Marks and Sparks makes him sneeze. hmm

Lona Fri 19-Sept-14 09:44:49

Flickety I noticed that advert yesterday, as it was almost thrust under my nose at the top of the DMail.
It's like 'soft porn', similar to the David Beckham ads. Do we really need M&S to advertise that way?

Just saw that after Mary Berry wore their stork print jacket on GBBOff it sold out online within half an hour!
I still don't like it though.

kittylester Fri 19-Sept-14 10:14:12

I thought the storm thing was hideous too!

I find the website quite easy to use and I always get what I ordered! I find it really useful for buying for mum. What I don't like is the fact that stuff can be collected from our local M and S food store but not returned there!

posie Fri 19-Sept-14 10:15:18

Just saw the GBBO thread where jacket has already been commented on.

I must start reading faster smile

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 19-Sept-14 11:21:25

I did n't realise it was a marks and sparks jacket. Wonder if these people get a fee for wearing the stuff on tv.

HollyDaze Fri 19-Sept-14 13:45:38

they do need to get the quality sorted. They may save money long term if they brought the work back to this country rather than paying slave wages overseas.

That is my biggest complaint about M&S - the quality is so poor now; sizes seem to vary as well and I agree with the comment about trousers looking like jodhpurs. Mind you, the local shop owners are delighted and stated that their 'business is now thriving since M&S shot themselves in the foot by transferring to cheap manufacturing abroad'.

When I pop into M&S (usually just the food section now), it looks deserted, even on Saturdays (apart from the food section which is very popular).

Lona, it is not as if the advert was even done in an attractive way. Hard porn poses, but with underpants. I think this is why I just turned over fast. My reaction was not a 'shock, horror, delicate sensibilities distressed' reaction. It was quite simply a 'Yuk' reaction.

Lona Fri 19-Sept-14 15:08:49

Exactly Flickety who wants to look at that? What's more, he looks so smug with it! grin

FlicketyB Fri 19-Sept-14 19:29:04

I gritted my teeth this afternoon and gave the double page spread a considered viewing. I could see nothing in it that was either attractive or interesting.

We are told this man is a top model, so big he gets his name on his underpants and in the advert hmm. To me he looked like a very ordinary bloke who spends too much time in the gym. His underwear was pretty dull too.

Thank goodness DH buys his (more colourful) underwear in Sainsbury's.

Have to admit that M+ S is not exactly making me want to buy any new autumn type clothes right now. (maybe just as well!)I looked round my local store yesterday and thought what a load of boring items were in there. Even in Per Una, which I generally quite like, there was nothing to appeal. I did spot a couple of nice looking coats ,which I don't need and some ok lingerie, but otherwise , nothing.
The café is ok, but service sometimes slow even when not especially busy. I SHALL continue to go there as I enjoy the buzz , the sandwiches
and the coffee.

trendygran Fri 19-Sept-14 20:19:59

FLICKETY B. Had the same reaction to the latest 'male' advert! YUK!

etheltbags1 Fri 19-Sept-14 20:33:40

The new advert is not good, it wouldn't entice me into the shop.

I only go if I'm in the shopping centre and going somewhere else but I do like to look in, if I buy something its got to be reasonable price and got to last to fit in with my budget so I will be looking in in the next few weeks but if the stuff is no better than last years I wont be buying.

I do have some M&S cardis and t shirts from years ago and the quality is amazing (20 yrs old), hope the new stuff is as good as this.

rosequartz Fri 19-Sept-14 20:39:51

Missed the advert - what have I missed?

I bought two jackets last year from a discount store and it rained so much I haven't worn one of them yet. That is me sorted.

Fishing out a shirt which must be 20 years old from M&S to use as a cover-up on holiday. Still OK!

Deedaa Fri 19-Sept-14 21:19:11

I have got several jackets that I have bought in M&S over thelast ten years or so. The tailoring usually good in the more expensive ones and I wait for the sales and use my staff discount. (Cheapskate? Moi?)

JoyBloggs Fri 19-Sept-14 21:23:01

FlicketyB and trendygran... I'd like to add another 'Yuk'! Prefer Joe any day...

tiggypiro Fri 19-Sept-14 22:24:54

Saw the ad in the Telegraph today. I can only think that the pants must be grossly over priced as the cost of hiring someone who seems to be famous (who is he?) plus these huge double page ads in lots of papers will be paid for by the folk who buy them.
