Here we go again - M&S woes

I was delighted to receive a clutch of "Friend and family" 20% off vouchers from M&S. Can't be bad, I thought, as I had seen a dark red duffle coat in the Sunday magazines and I liked the look of it.

All I can say is that whatever they pay their advertising photographers, it can't be nearly enough. What looked warm and inviting in the picture turned out to be heavy and stiff, with a zip that was hard to do up and an uninspiring mock-tartan lining.sad
So I thought I need some trousers - but the quality of the fabric was so cheap and dire they were rejected as well. A cardi? My granny wouldn't have been seen dead in what was on offer - dreary pastels, metallic threads, odd coloured buttons from Per Una (how many years have they been going on?) and dull, dull, dull styling.
So nothing new to add to previous threads lamenting the dearth of decent things from M&S - the only thing they seem to do well is their advertising!

I did n't realise it was a marks and sparks jacket. Wonder if these people get a fee for wearing the stuff on tv.

Just saw the GBBO thread where jacket has already been commented on.

I must start reading faster smile

I thought the storm thing was hideous too!

I find the website quite easy to use and I always get what I ordered! I find it really useful for buying for mum. What I don't like is the fact that stuff can be collected from our local M and S food store but not returned there!

posie Fri 19-Sept-14 10:01:04

Just saw that after Mary Berry wore their stork print jacket on GBBOff it sold out online within half an hour!
I still don't like it though.

Flickety I noticed that advert yesterday, as it was almost thrust under my nose at the top of the DMail.
It's like 'soft porn', similar to the David Beckham ads. Do we really need M&S to advertise that way?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 19-Sept-14 09:32:47

If I didn't buy DH's clothes I think he would still be happily wearing stuff from the seventies, holes and all. He hates shops. Marks and Sparks makes him sneeze. hmm

FlicketyB Fri 19-Sept-14 08:32:19

The papers today are full, and that really is the word, of M&S men's underwear adverts. I found them quite off putting. I am also not quite sure who they were aimed at. Do men respond to these 'full' frontal adverts or are they assuming that women buy men their underwear?

Personally, I would not dream of buying DH any clothes. He is not a child and I am not going to buy his clothes for him as if he was. It means I live with his clothing decisions, even if I do not always like them and he has to live with mine.

Never heard of David Gandy, or any other male model come to that. I just glanced at the pictures in the advert and turned over as I found the whole advert so unattractive.

I went to M & S Marble Arch today where unbeknown to me they were launching their new men's David Gandy (male supermodel?!) underwear and nightwear range with a personal appearance by the said model. I have no interest in him or his 'range' but what has really hacked me off is that for the past couple of months I haven't been able to buy the pyjama shorts that I usually buy for my DH,he is disabled and he finds these particular shorts the most comfortable to wear, but lo and behold I can purchase them today as they have been rebranded as part of the DG range but are now £5 dearer!

M & S just seems to continue to disregard and hack off their loyal customers.

And by the way David Gandy seemed very ordinary with all his clothes on!

I keep getting 20% off vouchers and they just sit and moulder and go out of date. Don't know why I bother with the M and S credit card to be honest as I get all these vouchers and cant find anything to spend them on. I use the actual cash vouchers for food. I hate polyester and man made fabrics as they make me feel as if I am going into meltdown. Can only wear linen and cotton and wool, and despite the sometimes hefty price tag on ranges such as Per Una they are often nasty sweaty polyester. As for the Classics range......speechless.

Have never had a problem with their website until recently when 2 items I ordered were suddenly unavailable the next day. After payment had been taken, it was swiftly reimbursed.
I have some of the 20% off vouchers, does anyone know if they can be used for children's clothes?

Katek Wed 17-Sept-14 23:15:17

I bought 2 identical bras online - one fits and the other doesn't even meet at the back!

Charleygirl Wed 17-Sept-14 22:50:50

Recently I ordered a couple of bras on line with knickers and trousers for the gym. By the time I arrived at the paying off point, the bras were out of stock!

Galen Wed 17-Sept-14 22:29:10

I HATE their website!
I specify a size and colour and then when it displays, find only in a size 8 and I'm a 18/20!
What's the point of specifying?
I've given up with them

rosequartz Wed 17-Sept-14 22:10:15

Delivery is first class once you can make an order.
The person who took my phone order was very helpful indeed.

Ana Wed 17-Sept-14 22:04:25

I've found no problems at all with their website - which is just as well, as they never have the size/length/colour I want in my local store. Their delivery service is first class.

rosesarered Wed 17-Sept-14 21:59:49

I have had so many problems with their website that I have given up on it.Went into a small M&S last week but saw nothing I would buy there. Bought 3 lovely 'on trend' tops from Debenhams though, and nice quality [though more expensive than M&S.]The Mantaray brand.

annodomini Wed 17-Sept-14 21:50:30

Does anyone else think that M&S made a bad miscalculation when they started their beauty department, stocked with products from manufacturers I, for one, have never heard of? I rarely see anyone buying any of them and their prices are considerably higher than M&S's own brands like Autograph which I have found to be perfectly adequate.

Bring back St. Michael!

rosequartz Wed 17-Sept-14 21:40:09

I have been having trouble with their website as well, and when I finally managed to get through to the point of placing an order was told they didn't know who I was and I had to register!!

All I wanted was some underwear; there was an offer for a beauty box worth £88 with the order (oh yeah?). I thought this would be added at checkout but it wasn't, so I added it. Then it would appear that I was being charged £88 for it.
In the end I phoned up, moaned about their website (she didn't seem surprised) and she cancelled my original order and started again. The one bra I wanted became out of stock in the short time between online and telephone orders. Another one was a truly vile colour when it came (it said 'matching knickers available' but that must be in a different shop somewhere else, not M&S as they don't stock any knickers of the same colour - in the event thank goodness as the bra went back.)
The 'free' beauty box was OK, filled with a mish-mash of things some of which I may use, some I may give away.

I keep being told I don't have an account with them, so have given up trying to get on their web site.
However I still get all their advertising e-mails to the address that they tell me doesn't exist.

Having been an M&S critic for upwards of 50 years, I confess that I was in their today and was quite impressed by some of there clothes and came out with some really nice ankle boots in cherry red and two pairs of leggings, one very sturdy and the other velvet. The velvet one's are thin and may not last but I need them for two evening engagements in October and probably will not wear them often after that.

I did notice that it was a shop of two halves. The downstairs, front was all geared up for younger people. Oxford is a university city and term starts soon. The clothes there, sweaters, shirts, trousers leggings were great in design and colour and I may well go back and buy some. Go upstairs and it was nothing but what I can best describe as 'old lady' clothes (this from an old lady). What I think they call classics. DH's definition of a classic is something that never goes out of fashion because it has never been in fashion. The clothes were dreadful, lots of shapeless baggy legged trousers, mainly in black and all with that very faint polyester shine on them and lots of slippery polyester blouses.

I have been getting BHS knickers (Midis) for years in packs of 5, but recently they haven't had colours I want so I tried M&S. Their Midis are good quality but much bigger, so I am wearing Big Knickers confused !! I also get bras there, and men's knee-length socks, as they wear much better than women's ones. Haven't tried their website, but after these reports, don't think I'll bother.

Elegran Wed 17-Sept-14 20:09:23

The short answer would be "Well, someone has a problem now!"

petra Wed 17-Sept-14 19:29:57

She more or less insinuated the same to me TwiceAsNice. I told her that wasn't the case. I told her that I belonged to GN and there had been mention of their awful website. I referred to MN as well and what had been said on there.
Then she tried to infer it was my ipad!!!
