Do you still wear jeans?

I'm fairly new to gransnet so I hope I'm not rehashing an old thread but is there an age when you're past your sell-by date for wearing jeans? I'm a baby boomer and we were the first "jeans generation". I'm still fairly slim and feel comfortable wearing them but don't want to look like mutton dressed up as lamb.

Handynan I think the concept of 'mutton dressed as lamb' is now outdated.
It's ok to wear anything you like, that suits you, is comfortable, and if you care about such things, whether it's stylish and appropriate to the occasion.
Not everyone cares about the last two, and that's ok too wink

I wear black jeans boot cut and high wasted usually per Una Roma cut- they seem to look quite smart with tunics or longish sweaters. I don't wear trousers every day I like to alternate with skirts and dresses. Cords for the golf course in winter same cut though. Wide leg linen trousers for the summer though.

waisted!!

Soutra Fri 12-Dec-14 09:32:24

It actually took me nearly 4 years of retirement to wean myself off "smart" trousers ! Jeans and cords in winter, linen trousers in summer and the "smarty pants" only get a very occasional airing. So much simpler.

I agree with jeanA, who cares? Wear what you like as long as it is not dowdy and boring. I am more concerned about wearing something appropriate to my shape than my age. If I like it that is all that matters.

Love not wearing suits since I retired.

I grew up on a farm in Canada. My mother wore practical but not very nice jeans over her house dress when working in the barn so I know she associated jeans with hard, dirty work.

When I was not quite 22 and about to get married, Mum asked if I would now get my long hair cut and start wearing nice house dresses instead of the jeans I always wore. Sorry Mum. I no longer have the long hair but I'm still a jeans wearer at 68!

I like slim, stretchy dark denim or black jeans best, or jeggings/treggings with a tunic/long jumper (many women I know wear leggings but that's a step too far/skinny for me to feel good). I think it's great that in our generation of women we don't feel we have to conform to some idea of what older women should wear but can choose what we like and feel comfortable wearing.

I wear jeans sometimes, to the amusement of my DD , because I began to wear them again aged 60, after not doing since my early 30s!

KatyK Fri 12-Dec-14 10:37:39

I've worn jeans all my life and see no reason to stop now that I am 65 tchsmile

Thistledoo Fri 12-Dec-14 12:24:41

Oh yes I wear jeans, not all the time but I love the nicely cut ones and jeggings are great for tucking into boots. Mutton dressed and lamb, who cares, if you like them then wear them, we are the jeans generation after all we have a right to them. grin

I certainly do - Marks and Spencer do good ones which fit me well, also Sainsbury whose clothes range has improved vastly this year. In the summer I wear chinos. I like to wear high-waisted skinny jeans. I'm reasonably trim and I think I look ok in them and they are so practical and warm.

KatyK Fri 12-Dec-14 13:13:11

I'd rather be mutton dressed as lamb than mutton dressed as mutton tchgrin

From my first pair of Levi's in the 60's, I have always worn jeans.

I wear skinny cords tucked into boots in winter as I find denim too cold and wear skinny denim jeans/coloured jeans with ballet pumps other times of the year.

KatyK Fri 12-Dec-14 13:40:34

I still invest in a good pair of Levi's. They last for years.

J52 Fri 12-Dec-14 13:55:21

If you get the chance, go to the Levi's museum in San Fransisco. It is really fascinating and informative. X

It's great that nowadays we can get jeans with a particular fitting for waist and bum. Stretchy and slim at the hip and don't come in too much at the waist. M and S Lana fit are perfect for my Apple shape going down a size.

I wear jeans or jeggings with boots all the time, either black or dark blue. I do often think it's very boring and decide to break out into something new but I don't know what. I used to like shortish skirts with opaque tights when I was working but now I find skirts are draughty. How did our mothers manage without trousers? I remember my Mum wearing corsets as well.

Jeans are ageless, in my opinion. Sometimes I wear them and sometimes I don't. I just love them; they seem to put me in a younger mood, somehow.

Starling Fri 12-Dec-14 20:06:40

Jeggings or black jeans. Although I actually find my numerous pairs of ex-work black M&S trousers more comfortable!

Nonu Fri 12-Dec-14 20:15:17

Of course I do , why on earth not ? Seems a strange question TBH !!
tchhmm

Nonu Fri 12-Dec-14 20:17:09

Mutton dressed as lamb TMM is far better then Mutton dressed as Mutton!
tchsmile

I love jeans and wore them from the 60s when they were considered daring. I like just ordinary ones, not bootcut or streachy, but I have skinnyish ones too. I am not at work at the minute and when I work I must wear horrid dress code/office type black trousers so now I wear jeans all the time, might even wear skirts if I can find some thick tights somewhere. I have all my office wear in the wash and will be put away until I get back to work-if ever so I will be shopping for jeans, I find that mens jeans fit me better as my hips are smaller than my waist and my legs are quite thin. Must ask Santa for some shopping vouchers.

I wear jeans, have never stopped wearing them. They are OUR fashion, we wore them first. Let the young find something else if they want to be different.

Deedaa Sat 13-Dec-14 22:17:26

I hadn't worn jeans for years but last year DD gave me a pair she had worn when she was pregnant. They weren't very thick denim and are quite comfortable and I've since added a pair of black stretch ones.

goldengirl Sun 14-Dec-14 10:40:48

It never occurred to me that I might be too old for jeans! I like 'em so I wear 'em.
