Shampoo that's bad for the hair!

At the hairdressers last week, we got talking about shampoo. the two hairdressers told us that the two shampoos that knock the stuffing out of hair with prolonged use are Head And Shoulders and ANY Pantene shampoo.
Eeeek! My hair had been looking less than great, so checked my shampoos on returning home, and the mosed used one was Pantene, so it got ditched!
they also said that if you colour your hair never to use Head And Shoulders, it strips out the colour.shock

I was told about Pantene over a decade ago by my then hairdresser, these days I use a shampoo recommended by my hairdresser by Matrix. My hair is very short so nothing could ever build up before it ends up on the hairdressers floor.

I swim 5 times per week so chlorine (despite a swimcap) is an issue for me. I alternate between Tres A* and Pan* and my hair is washed daily. I ALWAYS use Charles Worthington leave in conditioner, NEVER comb wet hair and NEVER EVER use a hairdryer. On the odd occasion my hair is not washed for a day I spritz on a conditioning oil.

A professional trim (at home by a friend) every 4 weeks is the only other thing.

In the past I used a blue shampoo but it left my hair feeling 'stripped.' I spent many years straightening and drying my hair but now let nature take its course with my natural curls. My hair is now soft and shiny.

H&S and Pantene are trash. I prefer Dove and recommend it to everyone.

I always use Johnson's baby shampoo. Gentle and effective.

I've just started using Dr Organics Argan oil shampoo, from Holland and Barrett. It smells lovely and has no nasties. Am happy with results so far. My hair is naturally white/ grey and very fine.

How my granny washed her hair:-

1. Fill enamel bowl on kitchen table with warm pre-boiled water from the kettle
2. Dampen flannel, rub on plenty of Sunlight soap. Rub flannel vigorously over hair
3. Tip head forward over bowl. Using the same water and flannel, rub over head several times to remove the soap.
4. Rub hair vigorously with rough towel
5. Repeat at fortnightly intervals

Her hair always appeared soft and shiny.

Dark suits cause dandruff.

Shazmo24 Sun 11-Oct-15 17:56:34

I just use the cheapest one when I need any

Talking of straighteners, are they bad for your hair?

Can anyone advise what to do about psoriasis on the scalp? Dandruff shampoos make it worse.

I use either Osmo, Joico or Pureology shampoos and conditioners. You can get them from the hairdressers.

Also, look for conditioners containing Argon oil or pure coconut oil.

Never ever use washing up liquid on your hair, not unless you want to look like Worzel Gummidge. If you've had your hair dyed chemically using a peroxide based product, the colour has penetrated into the hair shaft.

Using fairy liquid or any other harsh detergent based product on your hair will permanently damage the cuticle scales and this allows some of the artificial hair colour molecules to wash out. So it might look a bit lighter... However, once the scales are damaged, no amount of conditioner will repair them. You need the cuticle scales to lie flat so that light bounces off them. That's why hair in good condition (or straightened) looks so shiny.

If the new colour is too dark, get it fixed properly.

I use 2 in 1 from Sainsburys which costs £1 and I have no problems with it.wash my hair every 5 days as it is thick and prone to dryness. Avoid hair driers as much as possible.

I use, at the moment, L'Oréal Elvive. I've just checked the ingredients list and it's horrifying - I couldn't begin to pronounce half the chemicals listed. Can't see any silicone though. confused

Lots of interesting suggestions here. I like Dove Pro-Age and alternate with Johnson's Baby shampoo - my hair is very fine and the baby shampoo works very well.

Sorry - my mistake.

I wish I could find a shampoo that doesn't make the back of my scalp itch. I've tried all the usual ant-dandruff products (the cheap ones and the expensive ones) but they are very hard on the hair and didn't work on my scalp. Any recommendations, anyone?

DH has been using Head and Shoulders for years. I have shown him this thread and now he might believe me that it is the shampoo that makes his hair so dry and dull.

Roseq If you have a nearby Oxfam shop, you may find Faith in Nature products in there. Ours sells a limited stock.

I use Faith in Nature or Organic Surge shampoos, never need conditioner - as near to 'nasties'-free as possible!

I always keep three shampoos on the go as I once read that hair benefits from a regular change of shampoo.
And, by the way, Fructis seems to suit my hair more than any other.

Schwarzkopf from the pound shop - DiLs who are quite fussy about their long hair tried mine without knowing its 'pedigree' and decided it was the best they'd used for ages. Funnily enough I can remember chatting some years ago with an acquaintance who was a rep for hair products and she said Schwarzkopf was excellent because it was one of the few without silicone. I change around every few months anyway but always come back to it. Sadly one of the worst I tried which absolutely 'killed' my hair was very expensive Neal's Yard Lavender. Smelt great though!

Several years ago had to take pills for psoriasis which caused hair thinning. Began using Simple shampoo & conditioner, very gentle & worked well. Have continued using these products even though no longer have problems & hairdresser has commented on good condition of hair on several occasions. Better news - these products sold by local Poundland!

Omaoma57 Sun 11-Oct-15 10:55:13

Has anyone tried Wen shampoo, saw it advertised on TV as an alternative to regular shampoo...?

NonnaAnnie Sun 11-Oct-15 10:54:33

I use TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Restoring Shampoo, and the conditioner and heat protection spray it's the best I've ever used, very good value and it really suits my hair. My hairdresser hates TRESemmé and I'm not allowed to mention it in the salon LOL!

TerriBull Sun 11-Oct-15 10:43:01

I'm not faithful to any one shampoo, but I do like the Aussie range and probably use their products more frequently than others.

I use wash and go ..... 1 pound in Asda ..... lovely.
