Do you really know the colours that suit you?

Probably ( by now) most of us think we know what suits us colour wise, but you can still be surprised, I thought that I didn't suit any shade of green, but then tried on an olive green long-ish skinny cardigan and loved it.This was a few days ago, next time I go clothes shopping I will be more 'random' in my choice to see what else suits me.I think it must be getting older, as the skin does seem to change ( it's skin, not hair colour that matters I think.)Has anyone else found this?

Having my colours 'done'- a good many years ago was one of the best things I have ever done. It was part of a self assurance weekend course- it wasn't Colour me Beautiful but something similar I think- they also did the styles of clothes that suited our frames.
I used to wear a lot of black & vivid pink. Turns out I am 'warm Autumn' & need warm colours- never black or white or vivid pink but soft greens peacock blue, oranges ,warm yellows, browns & creams.
It makes clothes shopping s much easier- I just only look at the colours I know are good on me. I take my colour swatch everywhere with me. I was amazed at how much softer my face looked in the right colours n& how black or white against my skin drained it. Nothing to do with hair colour.
My wardrobe is much more lively & I get gold jewellery ( If I'm lucky!)
Buying a posh frock for Christmas is a real pain though- please can we have less BLACK!

Sorry, roses, my post seemed to hijack your thread. flowers

I tend to be black, black or black but always with a soft material scarf for a splash of colour. Also denim jeans and casual smart top. I do get a bit more colourful in the spring and summer when I favour mauves, burnt orange , purple shades.

I avoid yellow and red like the plague, bleach blond hair and a good old peasant ruddy complexion. Too much information smile

Anything with a large flower is a practical no goer with my height and size, I look like a walking garden.

Many years ago a friend did a make up course and she told me I was best suited to winter colours, so I stuck to them and changed all my gold jewellery to silver and mostly stuck to the suggested colours. A while back someone else told me I was Autumn but I was possibly in between colours! This would mean I'm probably better suited to gold tones. So I'm totally confused. I think in most cases you can tell immediately which colours suit a person. However I'm not one of those.
I would love to have a professional colour class and am very envious of kittylester and very much hope that you report back to see if your investment was worthwhile.

I love colour! Bright clothes cheer me up and are often commented on. I am glad older women do not have to stick to dark or boring colours anymore!

I too had my colours done as a treat from my friend for our 50th birthdays, we had a fun day out and gained some useful tips.
I'm a 'winter jewel' so bright clear colours suit me but they often brighten up a basic black outfit in the form of a scarf or top.
I have always had a natural aversion to all shades of brown, orange, yellow and green! I have brown eyes though and always use shades of blue in my eye make-up.
It makes shopping for clothes easier when you have a strong colour preference, I can discount half the rails in a shop that is colour co-ordinated!

That's fine kitty ? I only started the thread because I was amazed at finding the olive colour suited me, and wondered if anyone else had noticed a similar thing, now we are older, and I have enjoyed reading everyones comments.

I once bought a bottle green suit and it looked quite dreadful on me.

In an attempt to not make the same mistake again I paid for a 'Colour me Beautiful' consultation,

What did she tell me to wear? Bottle green.

Complete and utter waste of money,

This was, however many years ago so perhaps they're better at it now.

Hmmn, bottle green( like school uniform) a hard colour for anyone to wear!

I had a colour consultation years ago and was amazed to be told to wear pink. (I'd never worn pink in my life.) She was right though, I do look better in a clear bright pink. There is also turquoise on my palette and I like that very much. We had another colour consultant who came to WI and I was the chosen guinea pig. She put different coloured scarves around my face and confirmed what the other lady had said. All the others at WI agreed that they could see the difference.

Very interesting posts. But why is it that so many clothes on sale are well-styled, except for the patterns - hectic florals that make me look like a set of vulgar curtains?

mrshat Wed 20-Jan-16 16:59:07

GrandmaH I'm a 'Deep Autumn' from CMB years ago. However, they have now changed categories to Cool, Warm, etc. and I am now 'Soft & Warm'. This is probably equivalent to 'Warm Autumn' as skin tone a hair colour changes over the years, so our make-up and wardrobe needs change as we get older!! I do find the strong jewel colours that I loved as a 'Deep Autumn' no longer do me any favours! grin

Agree with you jaxie so many florals around this last year.Think the tide may be turning on that fashion now, hopefully.
