Probably ( by now) most of us think we know what suits us colour wise, but you can still be surprised, I thought that I didn't suit any shade of green, but then tried on an olive green long-ish skinny cardigan and loved it.This was a few days ago, next time I go clothes shopping I will be more 'random' in my choice to see what else suits me.I think it must be getting older, as the skin does seem to change ( it's skin, not hair colour that matters I think.)Has anyone else found this?

Do you really know the colours that suit you?
(38 Posts)For our last wedding anniversary dh bought me a Colour Me Beautiful voucher which I had wanted for ages. My appointment is on Friday next week and I'm quite worried that my normal palette of black, pink and purple will have to be ditched in favour of yellow and green - eekk!
Did anyone else encounter the Duke Of Edinbrugh bronze award scheme called ' Making the most of yourself'? We talked makeup and good colour choices for clothing. That was 38 years ago for me - /I thought it very racy then ... I am probably wearing the same colours now LOL.
kittylester, enjoy the experience - what a lovely idea for a gift.
I had one of those about 3 years ago, kitty and at the time while I enjoyed it ("me time") I was initially disappointed that my favourite sludge brown/camel/beige/olive green were given a definite thumbs down. Since then I have given up colouring my hair so it is now silver
and guess what? I cannot wear those colours. So I think the consultant was right all along and you should find that your own preferences are confirmed! Enjoy the experience.
I didn't know Coloiur me Beautiful was still going. I went to a "small group" one a few years ago and although I wasn't chosen as a guinea pig it was revealing as the girl's face seemed to light up with the right tones. Of course it is going to prove very expensive for your DH "kitty* imagine the fun of choosing a whole new wardrobe?.
when I was younger, I couldn't go near reds and yellows. Now with silver hair and older skin, I wear red regularly, not keen on yellows...
Yes it is the skin colour and texture that changes - it is often a mistake to keep to the colours one suited when young.
I had my colours done years ago. I'm pretty good with colour anyway as I have synaesthesia (emotional response to a sense), so I got most of it right. But I did have the usual browns etc and in vogue colours in my wardrobe. The consultant said look at your clothes and if the ones that you don't wear very often or don't feel 'right' in then it probably isn't on your colour spectrum. Very good advice.
I don't buy clothes that are too bright or too boldly patterned but I wear any colour if I like the style.
I can't say I've ever thought about it.
I remember the 'Colour Me' around over 20 years ago, I didn't realise it was still going either. enjoy kitty and come back and tell us about it?
When my oldest daughter turned 40 I treated us both to a colour consultation, a really fun time together. It confirmed what I thought i.e. that I look better in strong vibrant colours, so a good confidence boost. My daughter was disappointed to hear that black, her usual choice for work, is a no no for her but took the advice given and now brightens it with scarf. Apart from anything else it was worth the money just to hear her listen to good advice for a change!!
Hope you enjoy your treat kitty
I, too, think that what suits us changes as we age. I used to veer towards black and now I find it too harsh, so I end up with warm grey with some bold accents. Lately ventured into bright turquoise!
Climate also affects what looks good. I am very lucky and spend long periods in sunny climes where bright colours look great. Unfortunately, they don't look so good in northern grey skies.
(Annifrance - I too am synesthesic! Been for brain scans to help with neurological research!)
Yes! I had my colours done years ago: a friend came round and told me she'd just had her colour's analysed and I said "No! What a waste of time and - what's her number?" Loved it. And it makes economic sense cos you never make a mistake again. Plus it felt like she gave me permission to wear all my favourite colours, blues, turquoise, greens, pinks. Fab.
Just googled it and checked the cost. WOW!! You are one very lucky lady kitty ?
I'm a spring so clear blues and turquoise , yellows, reds, peach - all those sort of colours and gold jewellery.
The most difficult thing for me is style -it was so easy when I was slim but now? Haven't a clue really. The trouble is everything I put on at the most is acceptable never ever divine or even quite nice. Oh well.
Hey you don't need to pay to be told something you can easily find in a book.
Yes, we need a 'Style Me' as well really.?
And another thing? I think it depends on your character to an extent I love colour with a capital C and wouldn't dream of welcoming the day especially the summer with something dull like beige. Black looks dreadful on me but grey is ok.
I know I am ann - DH not quite so, I think, when the credit card bills appear because that's his department. Mine is just to look attractive in the lovely colours!
(and if you believe that, you'll believe anything!)
Actually, it's been a bit of a hindrance (and probably a good ploy on DH's part) as I haven't really bought anything since our anniversary (October) in case I got it wrong.
Grey, especially a sort of pearly grey ( a colour I would never have worn years ago) is now one of my fave colours.
No need to pay for an expensive consultation! Any decent personal shopper will be able to tell you what suits you well. Debenhams in Preston did a great job on me, though I could do with an update now I'm 10 years older/greyer.
I have always liked blue - I am dark haired and brown eyed and it always seemed to look nice on me. I have, very rarely, bought other colours. I do like dark copper as well as that always seems to look nice on me too. Decades ago we had been invited to a friend's evening 'do' after their wedding and I had been into town and chosen a dress (in blue). My husband promised to pick it up (they had to order my size in from another shop) on the day before the party. I had already sorted out my shoes etc to match the dress. Hubby arrived home with the dress in a bag. I just hung it in the wardrobe as it was without looking at it. On the Saturday evening I went to get ready to go out, pulled the dress out of the bag and it was green! Asked hubby if he had picked up the wrong dress and he replied 'they had the blue one as well but I thought this was nicer, you suit green and you always wear blue'. Would have helped if he had mentioned the change of colour the day before! Whenever I bought any clothing he would just grin and say 'Blue?' before I even showed it to him
PPP that was interesting in the neurological research - were you approached or did you apply somewhere? Mine came out when I was doing my late degree in History and Theory of Art and my tutor picked it up when I was talking about a painting by Kandinsky who also had synaesthesia.
I too love and wear bright jewel colours and live most of the year in the sun, and yes these are not right in winter, so I go for the darker colours like teal and burgundy, plus grey black and white which are all 'clear'.
I once in January got ready to go to a wedding in India wearing pale pink - it looked totally wrong and so did I under an Indian sun! So I changed into a dress of multi bright colours and felt really happy that I had done so.
Annifrance, I read an article about synaesthesic in a paper years ago and it said that they were looking for people to do the tests. I followed a link. There were online tests to check if you are really synaesthesic and then I was invited to have the scans and tests at York University. Don't know if they are still doing the research. It was interesting and also meant that I had my brain checked out as a side benefit!
A kind and generous friend bought me a 'colour me' session for my 40th (26 years ago!) and it was great! One of the best things I found out was that I looked awful in gold jewellery but fine in silver......that saved a lot of money over the years ( though white gold seems OK now
). Have fun Kitty!
Kittlester, I treated myself to this as a treat for paying off the mortgage a few years ago and it was money very well spent. My wardrobe was mostly blacks and whites but it now it is full of coral and red! It is amazing how much difference the right colours make. I also did the make up colours as well and definitely am much better now with lipsticks! I always thought I dressed fairly well and love clothes but now I am much more confident at choosing clothes and black is a minimal part of my wardrobe! Enjoy!
