How often should you wash your hair?

I used to wash (and condition) mine every 2nd day but I've read somewhere that this is still too frequent and strips oils etc. My hair is quite thin. I'm currently weaning myself to 3/4 days (without any dry shampoo which makes my head itch). How often do you wash yours?

Pre menopause every day in the shower before work-greasy hair and important to look groomed
In retirement and post menopause my hair will stay looking/feeling clean for days but it eventually goes flat and/or sticks up so I do it more for the styling .I try and time it for days when I'm doing something'social'
It doesnt actually take long to style/dry but I'm lazy. And I think the expensive colour does fade faster if you wash it a lot .
In a hot country/on holiday I'd probably wash every day ,sometimes twice, as I have the sort of hair that goes flat when I get sweaty .Plus it just feels dirty when you've been sweating

Like hildajenniJ I have short hair and wash it every day or it sticks out in a Worzel Gummage way.

I wash mine every second day usually - but have been known to leave it 4 days by which time it feels lank and dull. I remember as a little girl my Mum would do the final rinse with camomile leaves steeped in the water to ' brighten it ' she said - I still remember the smell today - shock

Surely it depends on what type of hair you have, and on environmental factors such as where you work and live. Bath or shower also has an impact I think. Different strokes for different folks...

Once a week for me if I break from routine I find my hair gets.....not greasy buts lacks style if done earlier and I don't use mousse or gel, hairspray they can leave a build up of products on your hair.

I wash mine once a week, usually on Sundays, but may bring that forward if I'm going out somewhere nice. Then it will most often get left till the following Sunday before it gets washed again.
I never condition, but for some extraordinary reason hairdressers - after commenting on what fabulous condition my hair is in and asking me what conditioner I use - always insist that I should conditioner!
One hairdresser lectured me for about 10 minutes about how imperative it was that I use conditioner (right after she'd told me what great condition my hair was in).
Another hairdresser told me we shouldn't use shampoo at all as it's too harsh and strips away all the natural oils. He reckoned we should only 'wash' our hair with conditioner.

Twice a week I used to wash it every other day but it tends to be dry at the ends so often I just use a dry shampoo on the roots.

Once a week - no conditioner, very mild shampoo (plant-based) . No other hair products, no styling...

I tend to wash mine weekly. I have found that, when I have been in a hotter climate, it needs washing less often. It is longish and thick and takes ages to dry to so I don't like doing it more frequently and it seems fine. I use matching shampoo and conditioner and go through loads of the latter, especially on the ends. I feel it 'tells' me when it needs a shampoo so I am guided by that.

As often or as rarely as you like. There are no universal shoulds about hair washing.

GNs who don't need to wash their hair everyday are very, very lucky; my hair's short and fine and if I leave it it plasters itself to my scalp which isn't a good look.......
It only takes me a few minutes to wash and blow dry my hair.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 03-Mar-16 23:15:42

When I went out to work, I washed my short hair everyday because I woke up looking like a coconut. Now though my hair is long enough to last several days between washes, especially if I spent time on it because I was going out somewhere. Can't stand an itchy scalp though.

My hair is coloured and fades more quickly if I don't use certain products to protect the colour and conditioner is one of those products. I don't use hairspray very often, but if I do, my hair needs washing much sooner. The only time I don't condition my hair is the last time I wash it before it's due to be coloured and then I use a basic shampoo to remove traces of products that might stop my colour taking well.

I wash my hair every day. I agree with Chicklette, hair has quite a distinctive smell. Also I have curly hair, which can't be tamed without blow drying .

NanSue Thu 03-Mar-16 22:11:44

Every day in the shower. I rarely use conditioner and I know that it probably strips away the natural oils but I just feel unclean if I don't wash my hair every day.

My eldest son, who has wonderful, thick, curly, dark hair, went through a stage when he said he'd read that if you don't wash your hair it begins to cleanse itself and actually makes your hair more luxurious. So he stopped washing his hair. The first month it looked minging (a Northern word) but after that it did look damned good. Wanted to wrap him in a towel and put him under the sink tap though - like I used to do with him in 1976 when the water shortage was on.

I wash mine most days.

glassortwo Thu 03-Mar-16 21:52:43

Every day.

whitewave Thu 03-Mar-16 21:41:26

Oh razor cut! I haven't heard of that for ages.

Coolgran65 Thu 03-Mar-16 21:38:31

My hair is really thick and grows outwards so I get it razor cut every 4 weeks. It's washed and conditioned, blown dry and spiked with gel every day.

Marmight Thu 03-Mar-16 21:33:37

Jalima wink. I find my head gets very wet where the hair meets the back of the neck and the sweat also trickles down the sides of my face - yuk . Sadly all this fluid loss has no effect on reducing my weight!

Deedaa Thu 03-Mar-16 21:21:16

I find twice a week is ample and use conditioner once a week.

Jalima Thu 03-Mar-16 20:32:42

Even though I am not usually near a beach like you Marmight (it gets very dusty in the Outback!).

Jalima Thu 03-Mar-16 20:31:42

About 2 or 3 times a week, but I have to tame it every morning!
When I am in Oz I wash it every day (and usually have it cut shorter when I'm there).

BBbevan Thu 03-Mar-16 19:48:18

Every morning and no conditioner

Maranta Thu 03-Mar-16 19:23:05

I'm amazed at how frequently some people wash their hair. My hair is very thick and needs a lot of taming as I blow dry therefore I do it as infrequently as possible - about every 6 days. I think I need some weight training for my arm muscles, maybe it would be easier then.

maryEJB Thu 03-Mar-16 19:18:36

I have to say my hair is thick and wiry and never goes greasy or lank or flat! If it needs washing it gets a bit stiff (all the hairspray?) but looks fine and doesnt smell. ThAts after 3 or 4 days. And for the record my mothers didnt smell either! . I think it may depend on your hair type. I have friends with thin fine hair who say it goes greasy and flat if they dont wash it every day.
