No more t-shirts?

I was watching a dept. store clothing consultant on tv giving hints on how to dress to look younger and thinner when over 50. She said we shouldn't wear t-shirts but tops with interests and v neck when possible. Use Blazers often and be careful with prints because they can scream old woman. I think she is right about the cotton t shirts I've gone through my closet and purged them.I may save a few for home wear and gardening. I have summer blouses I can wear I'll just have to get the iron out!

I feel you should wear what you want to wear - simple. Mind you, I have been sorting out t-shirts as my daughter gave me a kit at Christmas for making knickers - the t-shirt fabric is great for the gusset!

I belonged to an internet music forum which was made up of mainly middle-aged people. We organised regional gatherings and posted pictures of the participants. We noticed that many of the men mainly, and I include myself, dressed in black or dark coloured tee-shirts to disguise their spreading girth. We christened them FOBBITS - Fat Old Balding Blokes In Tee Shirts. wink

Agree with stillhere on those points.
roundneck tees look awful on anyone not young and thin, I wear v neck ones under an open shirt or vest type ones under an open shirt or jacket ( not a blazer I hasten to add) but haven't worn a tee on it's own for quite a few years as simply not flattering any more.

Since the top half of my trunk sank down onto the bottom half, I am finding that plain colour tee shirts accentuate my wideness.

I like a nice cotton blouse myself. White with blue flowers preferably.

Love T shirts, I have loads and do not intend to give them up. I wear what I want, not what some ' stylist' thinks I should.

Pittcity Thu 07-Apr-16 07:50:13

I find that t shirts accentuate my muffin top and steer clear preferring cotton shirts and shift tops that don't cling.

Nannylovesshopping Thu 07-Apr-16 07:49:22

I love slash neck tee shirts, am finding them harder to find lately

NotTooOld Wed 06-Apr-16 23:04:30

anno - I've not escaped the bingo wings but those elbow length sleeves I find too constricting when it gets hot. I need a bit of air (not hair) round the armpit. I quite like blouses and, like others have said, they can be more flattering to that annoying spare tyre.

Neversaydie Wed 06-Apr-16 22:49:27

Must admit I find pretty summer tops (not blouses)-last count I had 32- more flattering unless the T is really good quality (heavy cotton)and well cut so it doesn't cling but is not baggy . .Such tend to be very expensive .....

T-shirts are fine if you have some shape, or if they are fitted, but you can end up looking shapeless if you aren't careful. That's fine if you don't mind looking like a sack of potatoes, but I need nice tops now. I need a proper neckline, shaping around my waist and something that draws attention away from my spare tyre! Not something that fits it and my boobs snugly, whilst flapping around my waist. I like crossover tops, or tops with a bit of a draped neckline. T-shirt sleeves are cut at a strange length usually, too. I'm sure there are some nice ones out there somewhere, but as NotToo said, M&S t-shirts were lovely about ten years ago but have since disappeared. You used to be able to pick neck shape, sleeve length and top length. I found some lurking at the bottom of my chest of drawers the other day and sighed. They appear to have shrunk a size. grin

annodomini Wed 06-Apr-16 22:23:53

That should have read, 'I'm very grateful.........and so I believe ARE some other grans...'

Of course, the reason for this preference is that I like having my bingo wings concealed!

annodomini Wed 06-Apr-16 22:20:39

I'm very grateful for the elbow length sleeves on some of M&S t-shirts and so, I believe, have some other grans here. Cotton tees can be found on both Landsend and Cotton Traders web sites, with a good variety of colours and necklines on each.

I can't wear low v necks or low necks of any kind, but the scoop neck is fine for me. I don't like round neck t shirts except for the beach.

Deedaa Wed 06-Apr-16 22:07:51

I only wear T shirts with V necks and low necks. I've got a linen jacket which is cut like a blazer, but most of the time I wear long line cardigans or kimono style jackets.

Jalima Wed 06-Apr-16 21:31:30

I do have a couple of linen jackets and would tend to wear them with a plain scoop necked t shirt and trousers - a blouse makes me feel untidy.

NotTooOld I do prefer the weird longer mid-upper arm length sleeves as they hide my 'mango wings' (other thread grin)

Orvis men's t-shirts 85% polyester. What happened to cotton?

Envious Wed 06-Apr-16 21:22:16

You know they did show clothes in the store and in the back ground...maybe they were trying to sell their clothes. Also I think the lady should of said jackets instead of a blazer. What she showed was more a simple jacket I thought. Oh well! I'm glad to hear how you feel. I think I'll buy some v neck t shirts then. I have to deal with a fuller chest and regular t shirts aren't flattering.

mumofmadboys Wed 06-Apr-16 21:08:27

I think t shirts are lots more comfy than blouses. And they don't need ironing.

Regalo Wed 06-Apr-16 21:05:17

Ooooooo nooooo. I live in t shirts!

Greyduster Wed 06-Apr-16 20:50:25

Just me then? smile

NotTooOld Wed 06-Apr-16 20:27:00

I like cotton v-necked t-shirts with cap sleeves but I rarely see them in the shops now. M and S used to do good ones before they lost the plot but now many of their t-shirts contain a high percentage of polyester or, if they are cotton, they have weirdly elbow length sleeves.

I wouldn't wear a blazer. Does anyone wear blazers except school kids?

Alea Wed 06-Apr-16 20:24:17

I like V necked T shirts , but under jackets I think a square neck looks neater and also sets off a necklace or scarf. Bon Marche did some excellent ones 2summers ago which in my case are now part of my pj combination! Hope they do more this year. Orvis are good too, but at a price.

hildajenniJ Wed 06-Apr-16 20:20:14

I like my tee shirts too. I tend to wear them under sweaters or with floaty cardigans in the summer. I haven't had a blazer since school either , and I haven't the least desire to own one.

TriciaF Wed 06-Apr-16 20:00:19

I find that most t-shirts here are more like maternity smocks. You don't seem to be able to get plain fitted ones.
I agree about v-necks, anno , I have a short neck too

absent Wed 06-Apr-16 19:53:44

I have no desire to look younger or thinner and shall continue to wear tee shirts whenever I want to.
