How vain are you?

Or rather, what treatments/obsessions/habits do you consider vain? I have my eyelashes tinted every month (I look like a faded photograph otherwise). I paint my own toes - my reasoning is if I carry on doing them every day I'll always be fit enough to - ha! I don't paint my fingers though - that peels off always immediately.
But I certainly don't do a full make up every day. Do you? What are your 'vain' habits?

Very vain! Hair cut and coloured every month, gel nails, eyelash tint, eyebrow shape, leg and bikini wax every month. Eyelash extensions for holidays, paint my own toenails. Perfume and blow dry hair every day, always mascara and tinted moisturiser.

Not sure actually whether it vanity or self respect? Try to look the
best I can as two jobs both on Reception, one at private hospital and one at beauty salon. Makes me feel more confident if I look the part?

I won't go out with out make up, especially mascara, Iv'e even put mascara on in a moving car [ passenger] after it came off when walking dog, I've told my daughters I want it on after I die, when I was first with my partner i used to get up early in the morning to make sure I had it on before he woke up, , don't bother with that now after 7 yrs, my eye lashes are fair and I look like a marble statue without mascara, I also dye my eyebrows, I feel self conscious without mascara,

Pamaga Thu 28-Apr-16 10:30:51

I don't like going out without at least some eye makeup on - less bothered about foundation and rarely wear lippy.
I like to dress well when I go out as I feel it is a confidence booster if you feel that you are looking good.
I don't pay enough attention to my hands and nails and have resolved to try to do something about them over the next few weeks.
I am also self conscious about my bingo wings and the prospect of wearing short sleeves or sleeveless tops in the summer months has made me think I need to do a few exercises to try to tone my upper arms.
I don't think any of this is vanity, really, just a case of trying to maintain a halfway decent appearance and feeling of self-worth!

I try to be vain but I'm let down the kindness of others who apparently just see this old gal.

Irenealana Thu 28-Apr-16 10:18:25

Just decided I'm a big girl now and having my hair cut every four weeks instead of panicking at the last moment when going somewhere special. After reading all the posts, I'm about to make an appointment to have toenails painted. Thanks Gransnet.

What is the difference between vanity and making the best of what you've got? It depends on where you draw the line (or wrinkle). I would never consider cosmetic surgery, but I do carefully apply make up everyday, exercise and select clothes that flatter me.

goose1964 Thu 28-Apr-16 10:05:50

I bathe regularly & wash my hair every few days & that's about it. I've suffered all my adult life with on & off depression & it never seemed worth doing anything else so I'm stuck in a rut. I have tried make up & stuff but no-one seems to notice so why bother?

gettingonabit Thu 28-Apr-16 09:50:15

I'm very vain, I think. I've always been very uncomfortable in my skin and use makeup as a disguise more than anything else.

So it's the whole shebang for me: foundation, powder, lippy, eyeshadow, a bit of kohl maybe, hair dye (although I'm not grey), nails (I do my own).

I don't do my feet much as I don't wear sandals.

It takes me about 40 mins to get ready (including shower, moisturize, application).

TwiceAsNice Thu 28-Apr-16 08:16:18

I have my hair cut and coloured regularly don't want to be grey- just my choice!
My toes are always painted I think toe nails look bad enough already
Always wear moisturiser . I wear makeup to work and when I go out in the evenings but enjoy just wearing lipstick on the weekends and giving my face a rest.
Use body butter every day after I've showered and wash my hair every day and use conditioner. Use a foot cream on my heels, skin much dryer as I've got older and as a diabetic take good care of my skin and feet

I don't think of any of it as vain just making the best of what I've still got

I don't think vanity is the issue. What is important is feeling at ease "in your own skin". So if you like plastering your ageing wrinkled face – or lovely smooth skin – in make-up à la Barbara Cartland, why shouldn't you? If you want to colour grey hair, why shouldn't you? If you want to face the world au naturel, why shouldn't you? It becomes vanity only when you are concerned about how other people perceive you.

I just do what suits my view of me and what makes me feel comfortable in my own skin, even I I think my own skin might sometimes do with a little help. smile

I think it's nice to take care of yourself. It does not take too much effort or time really to look nice. I don't always like doing it but feel so much better afterwards !

In no particular order and not all at once I do the following :-

Clean my teeth to within an inch of their life smile

Remove facial hair with an epilator once every couple of weeks

Get my daughter to pluck my eyebrows every four months or so, and she will dye them at the same time. It does not last long but when she does it my face looks better - has definition.

When I remember I veet my legs and underarms and try to tidy the nether regions aiming for a Brazilian. Inevitably the cream goes everywhere and I end up with nothing. I'm not a fan of body hair.

I dye my roots every three weeks. I get my hair trimmed every six weeks.

I always have my nails done when I go on holiday both fingers and toes.

At the moment I have nothing on at all - giving them a rest.

When I shower I exfoliate and pumice my heels and use in-shower moisturiser.

Once a month I give my feet a good soak and a pedicure.

I enjoy doing it and it makes me feel happy whether or not anyone else notices - I do - and that is the main thing for me.

I wear make up if I am going out anywhere, other wise I don't bother, but I always moisturise with a good quality cream.

It all sounds like a lot but spread over time it does not take too much of my time

rubylady Thu 28-Apr-16 02:15:01

I shave my stubbly chin hair, ruffle my hair, put perfume on and a smile. Done. grin

I'm the same GillT57 except mascara. Can't wear any eye make up am so allergic to it it's not worth the hassle. I like to feel I've made a bit of an effort with my appearance which makes me feel better about myself. Nothing outrageous though

GillT57 Wed 27-Apr-16 22:57:08

Haircut every 5 weeks, colour every 6 weeks, pedicure in summer months. Make up including foundation, blusher, mascara, lipstick every day, perfume every day. Make up on in under 10 minutes so no big deal.

Jalima Wed 27-Apr-16 22:37:42

Is it vain to get your hair cut/ highlights/ eyebrows threaded/ manicure/ pedicure etc make up as and when/ clothes coordinated etc? Sounds like everyday grooming to me.

manicure/pedicure/highlights/threading/clothes co-ordinated
I wouldn't go that far shock
perhaps I do look like a shaggy sheepdog after all

lynnie1 Wed 27-Apr-16 22:29:18

I have my hair coloured, I wear make up and perfume every day. Tomorrow, I am going to have my eyebrows microbladed, because I have none. Am I vain ? I don't think I am. It just makes me feel better about myself.

suzied Wed 27-Apr-16 21:50:59

Is it vain to get your hair cut/ highlights/ eyebrows threaded/ manicure/ pedicure etc make up as and when/ clothes coordinated etc? Sounds like everyday grooming to me. If you cba to do all that faffing and you are totally happy with your appearance, fine. Personally, I quite enjoy the faffing.

kittylester Wed 27-Apr-16 21:30:18

I'm not at all vain!!! I only wash and blow-dry my hair daily, wear make up and perfume daily, get my toes done every six weeks, my hair cut every six weeks and the colour done every 3 months. It's what most of my friends do and the thing is that once I've done it, I never think about it again.

Jalima Wed 27-Apr-16 20:36:16

oh fgs I meant Jane10 I have doubled you somehow
Twice as nice grin

Jalima Wed 27-Apr-16 20:35:26

Jane20
I don't think that haircuts, tweezing, de-fuzzing, a bit of makeup to stop myself looking washed-out etc is vanity. It is just making the best of myself, which I do need to do. It's being clean and tidy.

I am not vain because I don't have a lot to be vain about. I have met some vain women and generally they don't make great friends.

Eloethan Wed 27-Apr-16 20:31:14

I nearly always wear full make up and when I haven't had time to put any on, I feel really tired and washed out - probably because that's how I look.

Jane10 That really made me laugh!

sarah12345 Wed 27-Apr-16 18:17:06

I must be very high maintenance compared to some. I like to look smart for work and wash my hair everyday and always wear foundation, blusher, mascara and lipstick. More if I am going out in the evening. I get my hair cut and coloured every six weeks or so. If I am going on holiday I treat myseft to a light spray tan and a pedicure.

Most of my friends seem to have a similar regime - some more some less. Must be in the genes though - my mum who is in her late eighties still has her hair done every week and never goes anywhere without her make up on.

Why not if it makes you feel good smile

Jane10 Wed 27-Apr-16 17:35:52

Gosh you all sound so high maintenance! I saw that advert (for l'Oreal?) and decided -I'm not worth it!

inatiz Wed 27-Apr-16 17:32:22

I dye my eyebrows at home every 6 weeks and have a cut at the hairdressers every few months, but I've also tried out eyelash extensions for holidays (brilliant!!) and didn't touch a drop of mascara all the way through.

I think I probably am quite vain...but it doesn't harm anyone else, so don't really mind it. I do get slightly annoyed when my holiday pal (who showers, puts on clothes and is ready to go out of an evening) gets antsy at my taking 20 minutes to get ready. 20 minutes isn't very long in my opinion!

TerriBull Wed 27-Apr-16 16:22:59

A little bit but not obsessional, I have highlights put in every 3 months or so when I have my hair cut, mine is just below my collar so I use a heated brush to make it go unde after blow drying. Too much faffing around really. I also wear make up, not too heavy, less is more when you get older, God forbid wouldn't want to go down the Barbara Cartland route, I don't know if anyone remembers her on tv at 90 odd, kitted out head to toe in fuscia with make up that looked as though it had been applied with a trowel. I've cut out foundation because I think it sits in creases and cracks, so just moisturiser on my face, but I've gone for eyebrow products lately, other than that mascara and lip gloss and like you WelshwifeI do my toe nails in the summer when my feet come out of boots and go into Fitflops
