Rather tempted to do something radical!

Evening all.

I (well, Mr P actually) have home coloured my hair for the last couple of times as an economy measure. It looks ok, choosing a lightish red that goes with my skin tone.

Last time I was buying the colour, I spotted a purple one! I don't mean lilac rinse type thing, proper purple.(Although not sure what it might come out like, given the amount of grey I have)

I'm tempted to give it a go, just once, for the hell of it.

I have recently cleared out some clothes that I feel are no longer "right" at my age (57, hurtling towards 58 reluctantly, and with all the grace of a hippo on roller skates) and just feel tempted to a small act of rebellion!

Should I?

Go for it! I wish I had the nerve to go pillar box red like Jonathan Ross's wife as I think she looks fabulous. I did wear a bright blue wig to a party once. A young friend looked at me quizzically for a minute and announced: "the spooky thing is it really suits you".

I loved your DGD's comment!!!!!

TheMaggiejane1 Fri 20-May-16 11:14:12

I agree with you Nonnie1 as soon as you go grey you are perceived differently, even if the colour suits you, or if it's a lovely shade of grey or you go prematurely grey, people still class you as old! I've even told my other half that if, when I die, my roots are showing, I want them touched up if anyone is going to be 'viewing' me!

gilly I did pillar box red about ten years ago, and loved it!

Craftycat Fri 20-May-16 10:47:56

Of course- life's too short- do it.
I have been every colour under the sun & it is great fun. I was sent home from school at age 14 for going purple. It washed out in about a week unfortunately.
I still get some bright red highlights among the more normal ones I have now.

Do it & enjoy it!!

Nonnie1 Fri 20-May-16 10:45:06

tubbygran.. I love that comparison. Hopefully she only means the colour smile

tubbygran Fri 20-May-16 10:38:49

I would love to dye my hair a really outrageous colour, but just don't dare.
However, it might be a good idea as my 4year old granddaughter observed last week, 'Your hair is the same colour as a sheep, Granny'.

Blinko Fri 20-May-16 10:37:17

I long to go deep red. Not ginger, but red like Carey Grant of the One Show. I'm tempted to try some of the semi permanent products mentioned here for starters.

Expressing oneself is not necessarily attention seeking;

Nonnie1 Fri 20-May-16 10:17:05

I have mostly white hair. Nobody actually knows how white it is since I have always had it coloured.

I'm 62 in May and look about 40. Nobody ever believes me when I say how old I am and I think this is down to good genes, no wrinkles and .... b l o o d y good hair dye !

One day I was bringing my grandson back to his father's apartment, and one of his neighbours introduced herself to me, and said "you must be XXXXX's mum.

I thanked her for the compliment and told her I was his grandma. She looked gobsmacked. Later she said to my son that she could not believe I was the grandma and not the mum.

Praise be to L'oreal' is what I say.

In Winter I use a mid brown, and in Summer I use a much lighter colour. The dye acentuates the differences in colour and it looks like I have blonde highlights in brown hair.

My hairdresser always comments on the colour, and I respect her judgement. If she tells me it is a little too dark I go lighter. If the light bits go 'off', she cuts them out and I start again.

I have asked my daughter to be brutally honest and tell me the day she thinks I look as if I artificially colour my hair, as opposed to just colouring it because I feel like a change. When that day arrives I'll stop and go completely white, or I'll start looking at perhaps an all over dark/ash blonde.

I'm not ready to stop colouring my hair yet. I think the day I do - people will look at me in a different category - OLD, and I am not old in the way society views that word.
Older but not old thanks very much.

If I were to go purple, people would look at me, and since I have a hard enough time looking in the mirror - for some reason I hate doing that - it's like acknowledging the devil smile.. I would not go purple or pink or blue not ever. Not on anyone's nelly. Not an attention seeker - just a blender.

Sorry, couldn't help myself grin

Charleygirl Fri 20-May-16 09:51:51

OMG LucyGransnet you are putting ideas into phoenix's head and she has enough of her own!

If you absolutely must, I would go for a wash out one, I would not go for a semi permanent one because when you eventually want to get rid of it, the hair colour is horrendous with the mauve and the grey growing through. If you really like the wash out one you can then go for the semi permanent. Maybe I am too staid but my hair colouring days are long over.

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 20-May-16 09:37:15

phoenix you might want to have a look at the Manic Panic range - my hair is currently emerald green courtesy of a mixture of two of their dyes! They have so many colours and they're all semi-permanent smile

mumofmadboys Fri 20-May-16 07:33:24

I have never dyed my hair. It is greyish now. I just hate seeing a different colour at the roots and this is what puts me off. Prefer natural look or perhaps I am just too boring and staid!!

gillybob Thu 19-May-16 23:37:22

I did it phoenix the full pillar box red !

For economical reasons and the fact that I hate going to the hairdressers I have almost always done my own home dye (well DH did the back for me) and I decided to do something daring. I didn't regret it for a moment but have now toned down to a boring more "normal" light auburn because I couldn't afford to keep up with the roots which came through after only 2 weeks.

wot Thu 19-May-16 23:25:47

Thanks for the info boh, very useful as I have been searching for this sort of product! ?

boheminan Thu 19-May-16 23:13:56

not sure if you're asking me Eloethan but I'll answer anyway.

Bleach London is sold only in Boots, and they do a variety of colours that wash out. I've been doing my hair once a week, every colour of the rainbow, for over a year. You need to have bleached hair/streaks for the colour to take. You condition your hair as you would for a bleach. The beauty is that if you don't like the colour then a few washes will fade it out. I block colour mine but have seen a lot of women around the same age as me walking round town, heads held high with purple or pink streaks which are effective too.

Eloethan Thu 19-May-16 22:46:34

I'm tempted by those different colours but I don't think I'd have the nerve to try them.

Do they damage the hair?

GarlicCake Thu 19-May-16 22:25:10

Go for it! I changed from Older Woman Blonde to elderly bright colours about six months ago. I'm loving it ... and learning more than I intended to about how different shades wear down and interact with one another.

That Jenny Jones poem has always been my model for getting old (and Augusta's grandmother from the old comic strip, if you remember - the one who smoked and drank gin!) Can't see any advantage to going grey & beige all over wink

When you've done it, please post a selfie!

Luckygirl Thu 19-May-16 22:16:52

I have always said that if I go grey I will dye it pink. So far I am still waiting and my hair is far too dark to do anything else colourwise.

I would go for the purple if I were you - and enjoy it!

phoenix Thu 19-May-16 22:13:21

roses where I work it wouldn't be considered a problem at all! If it went a bit wrong, I would probably have the P*ss taken, but nothing more!

Deedaa Thu 19-May-16 22:01:24

Definitely do it phoenix my hair is too dark sadly so I am limited to a dark plum colour. After all it's only hair - if it goes horribly wrong it will grow out again. It would be a shame not to have tried it.

loopylou Thu 19-May-16 20:08:35

Or even perhaps I could have a purple streak, sort of reversed Mallen streak?

loopylou Thu 19-May-16 20:07:14

I wish I had the courage to do that phoenix.....I must admit that I'm sorely tempted to go a delicate shade of violet (dd says don't you bl....y dare!) as am definitely white now not even vaguely silver fox as my hairdresser kindly pointed out ???

rosesarered Thu 19-May-16 19:52:26

Errrrr....Are you sure about this Phoenix ? Your firm may be not too keen on employees with purple hair.
