Tights that are comfortable comfortable to wear

Which shop and or brand sells the most comfortable design in tights please? I'm tired of ending up with tights where the crotch is halfway to my knees despite buying a pair that should fit my size, or ladder at the slightest touch, or are short in the body section. I'm going to a wedding soon and I would like to be smart and comfortable. smile

All comments gratefully received.

Definitely go for the better quality ones and get them in a size bigger than you think. I think the opaque tights from m and s good and just as comfortable as leggings / trousers. Maybe go for footless ones or if you are going to a wedding and want sheer tights, have a look for the ones that have the toes free. You can then wear peep toe shoes ( excuse for a pedicure) .

Are none of you chilly mortals? I wear tights nearly all the time, except high summer because my feet get cold, even if I am wearing trousers or leggings. In winter I wear thermal socks as well.

I need a 31 inch leg for trousers and, generally, never have a problem finding tights to fit that leg length. For fine tights I buy medium in Waitrose when I do my shopping. Thicker winter tights, I just go online. There are hundreds of companies selling them in a wide range of colours.

One exception, my usual bugbear, M&S . In the past all their tights have been the crutch at knee variety.

Because of a family wedding I bought lots of tights recently.Tried on some M&S ones that fitted so bought several packs in different colours and, darn it, they didn't fit. Can't take them back as they were packs of 3. Tried John Lewis ones..again didn't fit [pack of 3 again]. Found a box that I'd worn for the last wedding I attended 2 years ago and they fitted. Hurrah. Knew I'd bought them from the Co-op so bought two more packs today and was told when they were gone they were gone as it is the Pretty Polly factory that has closed down..they were the ones that made tights for M&S as well which is probably why their sizing has gone to pot. Not sure whether to now buy every pair of Pretty Polly tights that are still on the shelves..there were only a few left#whatt'do? Only wear tights on high days and holidays.

Primary pyjamas are incredible value too, and absolutely indestructible. Will try their tights, thank you.

Interesting 're Primark debs. This might be the first purchase that I make there.

Deb73 Wed 01-Jun-16 12:57:02

Primark. Seriously. For natural they have an 'oil look' range which last and I've worn again and again. (I was recommended these by a lady who certainly spends a lot on her clothes). For winter their 60 or 80 denier also last, don't sag, fall down and are comfortable too.

Oh Grandmattie (Monday 30) I fell for the "Silkies" blurb some years ago and like with the Readers' Digest, found it incredibly difficult to extricate myself from the "agreement". I ended up with more tights than I knew what to do with (and unlike you, didn't find them anything special) Like Amazon Prime, it is too easy to get "locked" into this type of financial commitment.

I'm a size 20 not good I know!! My tights fit well at the top but bag around the ankle. Any one else had success with these Wolford tights who is my size?

NotSpaghetti Tue 31-May-16 22:29:20

Both Wolford and Falke make great hold-ups.
Just don't moisturise your thighs if you want them to stay up!

Grannyknot. No, I remember them as looking like the real thing, in that once universal colour 'American Tan' grin.

granjura Tue 31-May-16 21:40:58

lol, love tthe look of leggings OVER a dress- a bit lumpy though ;)

etheltbags1 Tue 31-May-16 20:26:10

I never wear tights, I wear leggings over a dress but if I was going to a wedding/posh night out I would probably look for a pair, I've always worn Asdas in the past or
CO-Op (before they closed down) so Im watching this thread with interest and will look into the recommended brands.

My first pair of tights were when I was sixteen and had my first job in London, in the City. I was desperately saving pennies for the new things - tights - but they were very expensive. Until I had enough money I wore the same horrible suspender belt I had worn at school and stockings in the horrible American Tan colour. Yuk.

We think tights are horrible now but they were bliss after suspenders. Can anyone remember the bobble thing coming off the suspender and using a sixpenny piece to secure the stocking? Oh my.blush

In those far off days when I wore tights I always suffered from droopy crotch so I wore elastic knickers over them - now known as 'shapewear I think'. Kept the whole lot up and my tummy in.

If I needed to wear a skirt again I would do the same but several sizes larger.

Grannyknot Tue 31-May-16 07:12:43

1974cookie I remember those. To my 17 year old eyes they looked like the thick, pink tights that only "old ladies" would wear grin

Perdita33 Mon 30-May-16 22:05:19

Hold ups are much more comfortable than tights

1974cookie Mon 30-May-16 22:04:58

Reading this thread brought back some memories from the 60's when I was about 13 years old.
It was my first visit to the Ideal Home Exhibition in London with my friend.
There was a salesman selling "Indestructible Tights".
I will never forget the way that he demonstrated this fact:
He put a table fork inside a leg of the tights, prongs against the nylon, and ran it right up the leg. He did this with the other one too.
Result?
No ladders, not even a snag. They looked like new.
My friend and I were mesmerised, we desperately wanted some, but they were too expensive for us, + the fact that we were still in long socks smile.
Does anyone else remember them ?

Like olliesgran I wear a pair of light knickers over the top of tights to keep them up. It really does work on the very rare occasions that I feel I have to wear them.

Matthew1 Mon 30-May-16 19:59:05

I wear support tights for work (nurse) and only buy boots

Elisabeth68 Mon 30-May-16 19:34:54

Falke tights are great but similar price point to Wolford
But do last years!

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-May-16 19:06:59

Afraid I also buy Wolford in spite of the price. Sometimes the "b" grade are in TKMaxx. Don't wear them much - and mainly in winter, but I have two winter pairs I bought in 2000 (!) and they still fit well. I always hand wash though.
The pair I bought for a wedding were very fine and I am clumsy so they didn't have the opportunity to last!

grandMattie Mon 30-May-16 17:31:28

I don't wear trousers. I'm 5'10" and find that I too have the crotch between my knees, and was constantly pulling my tights up.
Until, that is, I discovered "Silkies". www.silkies.co.uk/ They have all sorts of tights - for fat people, for short people, for tall people. all sorts of types of support [both tummy and varicose veins], and they cost something like £5/6 per pair. They last for ever, unless they are caught on something, the thick ones last for two or three winters. I can't do without them.
They are only sold mail order and you can order no fewer than 4 pairs a month, but you can postpone the order for up to 6 months...
Good luck

olliesgran Mon 30-May-16 15:28:29

I hate tights, never worn them much, but there is one way to stop tights sliding down : Wear pants over the tights, a la Superman. It is brilliant! It stops the crotch ending up at your knees, and it works with thin knickers as well;In case you feel you want one pair of pants under the tights and one pair on the top!

sweetpea Mon 30-May-16 14:52:32

I tend to buy at M and S, but always go read the packet closely. I have trouble buying footsies, they always come up small and I feel at risk of them pinging off in all directions when I remove my shoes! Any suggestions? smile
