smart trousers

I am looking for a pair of smart black trousers but I'm confused by the styles - straight leg, slim, tapered. I have sent for several on line (M & S) but can't find any that fit. I am a short 10 but find so many look like jodhpurs or cling to the leg. Which style do you prefer for 'going out'?

I have just bought some of their soft, pull on trousers, which are less clingy than leggings, but still quite clingy. They look good under tunics with ankle boots. What surprised me was the £16. price, a bargain!
I hope they wash well!

I used to rely on M&S for their slim bootcut trousers, but now they only have two choices and never in my size. I bought straignt leg ones last time but I don't really like them. Not many other stores do the long length I need.

I think as long as the top I'm wearing is suitable for the occasion then the style of black trouser is what you are most comfortable with. I like either straight leg or skinny trousers with ankle boots.

Have you tried Next or Boden Ana?
I'm tall and their trousers are a good length for me. I also got a pair of skinny jeans from East in the sale for £13.99 which have been great.

I've tried Next, jane but not Boden. Thanks, will have a look.

I find that M&S trousers often have a 'jodpur' look. I'll watch this thread with interest as I have trouble finding good trousers.

Have you tried Bon Marche? They tend to do various leg lengths and I buy them for work.

Find that bootcut is flattering for us petites. Buy my clothes online from Very, which does a really good petite range. Have only ever bought 1 pair of trousers and 1 dress from M&S, because normally positively loathe their styles and wouldn't ever use them, but happened to get a voucher for £200 which felt obliged to use.

Oasis is also good..

I have found lovely fitting black straight trousers for short a...s like me (5.1) in F&F and Matalan £16 ish. They are not tight at 'cankles' (where my calf meets me ankle) and able to get away with nice strappy sandles.

I am also a 'short 10' I buy either a 'relaxed skinny' or 'straight' or 'tapered leg'. I buy from M & S and have also found Matalan very good. An M & Co has just opened near me. They have a good petite selection but I have not bought from them as yet.

I just bought a lovely pair in Warehouse in black and then re-ordered on line another pair in black and same in navy. Think they were £35, beautiful material and perfect fit for me in size 12.

I really prefer bootleg - can't get the footwear right for tighter fit when I need a heel. I have the feeling though, that bootleg are now dated and would never be worn by younger women. What do others think?

Jaeger do good trousers

hulahoop Sun 13-Nov-16 10:54:15

I prefer straight leg trousers as oi have too bigger knees for skinny or leggings I would like a pair that don't cling and show shape but fashionable I am only short as well ?

radicalnan Sun 13-Nov-16 11:48:56

I think my trousers smart if they cover up all there is of me......sad

Comfort before smart for me!

Perdita33 Sun 13-Nov-16 15:15:43

I haven't worn smart black trousers since I finished work 2 years ago. Just given the last lot of work clothes, which I'd been hanging on to, to the charity shop. These days I go for smart skinnyish dark denim or black jeans, or leggings.

Just seen this and thought it was like "smart phone" and wondered what the ........? confused

Theoddbird Sun 13-Nov-16 15:48:00

Skirts are so much easier....why not try a smart black skirt smile

goldengirl Sun 13-Nov-16 15:55:24

I like Lands End, Boden and Cotton Traders. These days I prefer trousers with a bit of 'give' around the waist!!!

Nannanoo Sun 13-Nov-16 17:08:43

That made me laugh, rockgran! Wouldn't it be nice if we really could get 'smart' trousers, which would automatically adjust themselves to a perfect fit and contour, and maybe even change style and colour with a few clicks of a 'trouser mouse'. grin

Dandibelle Sun 13-Nov-16 19:03:21

Stirrup pants are just coming back in!! I loved these first time around and find them very flattering

ggmarion Sun 13-Nov-16 19:16:18

Thank you all for your help. I now have a few more choices to try.
I know skirts are easier but with lumpy bumpy legs I like them covered. When I do wear skirts I wear boots to hide them but there are some occasions when boots are not suitable.sad
