Leopard faux fur coat

I succumbed to temptation and bought a leopard coat. How do I wear it without looking ridiculous? (with panache and flamboyance, obviously, but I'm a bit short on both...) I'm sixty, I probably look it although I dye my hair brown, I usually wear some makeup although not enormous amounts, I like earrings but my neck is a bit short and thick to take necklaces, I'm 5'4" and a size 14. I'm happiest in jeans and t-shirt, but I do have a secret urge to be dramatic from time to time. So how do I unleash my inner Rock Chick/Bet Lynch?

Ana Sun 22-Jan-17 17:05:06

Rock Chick - possibly, Bet Lynch - Nooooo! grin

I think I'd keep everything simple, no dangly earrings or flashy jewellery of any kind, monocolour top and probably trousers (boots with a small heel) and just let the coat be the statement!

Good luck smile

Wear it with a red neck scarf and red gloves I have a 3/4 length one and it is one of my favourites,I wear it with jeggings and boots and my big shiny black bag and don't care what others think its your choice not their's.

seacliff Sun 22-Jan-17 17:09:06

NOT like this!!

Maybe very casual simple black jumper and jeans with low heel boots. Minimal jewellery. (not Bets earrings)

MawBroon Sun 22-Jan-17 17:09:57

Main thing is to wear it with panache and a smile (lippy may also be introduced!)
Good for you, unleash that inner rock chick and say bo**ocks to beige or crimplene!!!

Or wear it with Chanel No.5 and nothing else! Bit parky for that at the moment.grin

Think that Ana has it right.

Indeed I agree a well cut pair of black trousers or good black jeans, a simple black skinny knit roll kneck and a huge pair of Mafia funeral sunglasses.

My sister's got one. She's in her late 50s. It looks fab.

I'm glad to see this post! I too succumbed to one in the sake in M & S which was reduced so much I simply couldn't leave it! My husband and daughter hooted and he said I couldn't wear it if out with him! I was quite upset about that so it's still in the bag. I can't take it back, it was on final reductions.

I can imagine some stylish woman in London wearing it with a black polo neck, black trousers, black sunglasses as per above but with style and elan but I feel like Bud Flanagan singing Underneath the Arches in it! The girls in the shop said I looked good but they would, wouldn't they? Please give me the confidence to wear it too. Btw, I'm 68 but tall and slimmish.

Lona Thu 02-Feb-17 17:03:36

I think you'll look very "on trend" as they say. Go for it and I bet your dh will change his mind.

janeainsworth Thu 02-Feb-17 17:24:14

mazza Ignore them. They aren't worthy of you.
If you're tall and slim you can carry off almost anything. As others have suggested, black trousers & sweater, red lipstick & sunglasses.
I bought a slightly daring (for me) faux fur coat in the sale last year & I love wearing it. In fact Ive got it on now & my hairdresser said he loved it grin

gillybob Thu 02-Feb-17 17:39:52

I would wear it with skinny jeans or black trousers pen50

I have got a (plain black) fake fur coat too and I love it. I wear it dressed up with smart trousers, a dress or skirt and dressed down with jeans and a top. I have had mine a couple of years now but it comes out every winter.

As usual I could not make out a word of Bob Dylan's lyrics.
Here they are for anyone else aurally challenged.
Not one of his best, I fearwink

Well, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Yes, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, you must tell me, baby
How your head feels under somethin' like that
Under your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, you look so pretty in it
Honey, can I jump on it sometime?
Yes, I just want to see
If it's really that expensive kind
You know it balances on your head
Just like a mattress balances on a bottle of wine
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, if you want to see the sun rise
Honey, I know where
We'll go out and see it sometime
We'll both just sit there and stare
Me with my belt wrapped around my head
And you just sittin' there
In your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, I asked the doctor if I could see you
It's bad for your health, he said
Yes, I disobeyed his orders
I came to see you
But I found him there instead
You know, I don't mind him cheatin' on me
But I sure wish he'd take that off his head
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, I see you got a new boyfriend
You know, I never seen him before
Well, I saw him makin' love to you
You forgot to close the garage door
You might think he loves you for your money
But I know what he really loves you for
It's your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

I can't abide animal print fabrics anywhere so I cannot offer any constructive remarks.

mazza245 Fri 03-Feb-17 09:06:39

Thanks for your positive (mostly) comments. I'm going, on my own, to see the Strictly show tomorrow night in Manchester as no one will come with me and/or pay the astronomical ticket price but I've treated myself. I will wear it to that! My old man is driving me there so he can lump it. I am very nervous about this coat as I have a friend like you, nelliemoser, who can't abide animal prints and who would not be seen dead in such a coat. I don't think I can wear the coat out with her either!

I'll just have to brazen it out or I'm never going to be able to take it out of the bag! How about you, pen50? Are you feeling brave?

gillybob Fri 03-Feb-17 09:10:35

I saw the Strictly show last year in Newcastle Mazza it was fantastic. DDiL bought me and my 2 granddaughters surprise tickets for Christmas. I hope you enjoy wearing you new LP coat smile

janeainsworth Fri 03-Feb-17 09:13:46

Come on Mazza!
It really doesn't matter if your friend doesn't like your coat. It's not as if it's real leopard skin.
Please yourself and have fun smile

radicalnan Fri 03-Feb-17 09:16:48

Just be your fabulous self...............

Lyndie Fri 03-Feb-17 09:18:57

I have had a leopard faux fur coat for a few years and if nothing else they are soooo warm and cosy. smile doesn't matter what people think. You get a second look!

harrysgran Fri 03-Feb-17 09:23:53

If you feel good in it wear it although I personally don't like animal print I did try a leopard print coat on but unfortunately Lily savage came to mind?

Stella14 Fri 03-Feb-17 09:36:49

Just go out there and rock it! Aren't we old enough now to wear what makes us smile, to allow ourselves to feel good being true to ourselves and not trying to 'fit in' with the expectations of some other people, who after all are unpleasent in the negatives judgements of other due to the trivial matter of what they like to wear?

Teddy123 Fri 03-Feb-17 09:38:33

I love animal print! and have a couple of leopard coats ..... Though only wear over black skinny jeans or leggings with black ankle boots / black sweater.

I think we're very lucky that ageism has disappeared from fashion and we can wear what we like and what suits us.

So release your inner rock chick and enjoy the coat x

Saw someone When I was in London yesterday, entering v push place, wearing leopard skin coat, caramel polo neck and tailored caramel trousers. She looked elegant and classy. I think it was the toning of the colours rather than the contact of black. Worth a try?
