www.nhs.uk/conditions/Fungal-nail-infection/Pages/Introduction.aspx

This is worth reading especially last sentence about fungal nail infections and salons.

Have you tried taking kelp as a supplement? It's been used for donkeys' years for nails and hair. I believe it ups the thyroid levels.

The lady that did my shellacs recommended massaging olive oil into the cubicles.
Also a few years ago I found glucosamine supplements made my nails rock hard.

Have you tried having gel/ shellac polish? My nails are awful, but having gel polish has really strengthened them. They are not false nails, just really hard polish which has to be dried under ultra violet light. You have to have them done at a nail place, but worth it. I now have a mobile nail technician who is a bit cheaper. I have them done every 3 weeks.

I would have suggested that you have damaged the growing area of your nail but if it's every nail then that seems unlikely. Could it be genetic?

Thanks everyone - but definitely no unknown health problems. And I have used everything suggested in these other Forums to no avail. I even consulted Leighton Denny when he visited our town a few years ago (very costly!!). Have used Nailtiques (both systems), OPI system, Every possible Sally Hansen concoction, (including some imported from America), Rejuvacote, Gelatin (jelly cubes), Nail Guard system (off QVC), Almond Oil and special Hand & Nail cream from Bodyshop, Soin des Ongles (Yves Rocher), and many, many more besides. I am beyond help I fear .....

I was reading about this in one of the weekend supplements and it seemed to be all about dehydration. When you say you have tried everything have you tried nail oil at all- that's what this article recommended. I have gelish on my nails now and again but rest them in between and apply nail oil twice a day.

Perhaps you should see a different doctor about this as it may be caused by an underlying health problem. A deficiency in the B vitamins can also cause problems with nails but I think the vitamins are better coming from food rather than supplements. I hope you can find a solution, as it is causing you a lot of anxiety.

For over thirty years I have had bad splits/cracks throughout the full length of my fingernails (I am nearly 78 now). I have tried every remedy under the sun, and must have spent over £500 on expensive OTC remedies for poor fingernails. On several fingers I have a crack/split which starts at the cuticle and the whole of those nails grow as though they are TWO nails - the split when it reaches the top end of the nail is impossible to "seal" and I have to continuously keep filing them smooth - which only lasts half a day at best.
I have ALWAYS looked after my hands and nails, and when I was a young girl/woman (17 to 48-ish) I had hands and nails I was proud of ... but now, I am ashamed of my hands, and this is such a shame as I have some beautiful rings, but I hardly ever wear them now, because they draw attention to my nails, and I hate the way they look. I have seen my Doctor about this - no remedy - and since I always wear rubber gloves if I am "in water" etc I cannot understand it. I have been taking Biotin (for hair, skin & nails) from Holland and Barrett, for years ... no improvement. Also have used various Vitamin supplements - still no improvement. I am really, really fed-up about this. Six years ago I decided to have Acrylics and at last my nails looked wonderful - but (a) it is expensive to keep up, and (b) when I decided to discontinue this, my nails were damaged beyond belief. Oh dear - sorry for the long rant, but I am very sad about this and cannot think what else to do. Any ideas?
