I used a strong magnifying mirror this morning when I put on my makeup. To my horror I saw I had a long, at least 2 inches, hair growing just under my chin. shock I cannot imagine how I have missed it.

I am always tidying up DH's ears and now I will have to get him to reciprocate with my chin. Why did none of my family tell me ?

I associate whiskers with really old people. I hope at 70 I am not in that category yet.

One reason people don't notice hairs is that to see them most older people need reading glasses. Sadly the hairs do come and I check once a month with mirror and tweezers. Also keep same in car so if left waiting have a chance to check.

I have a friend with a moustache but can't bring myself to say anything as I don't want to embarrass her! She has 3 dds so live in hope that they'll say something. I get everything waxed! Facially I mean!

NanKate Tue 21-Feb-17 11:29:28

Sarahellen your Mum sounded as if she was a cracker at 91.

Old age is difficult to define. I'm still 18 in my head as could be witnessed last Friday when my 6 year old GS said 'Do you want to come and boogie in the bedroom with me Nan using my new disco ball with flashing lights'? What fun we had grin

i'm afraid that i can't be bothered with tweezing so it's a razor for me! and i need to do it most days otherwise i get bristles - don't tell me that i shouldn't cos i find it so much easier to shave ............... a quick whizz around my chin and that's it.

starlily106 Tue 21-Feb-17 11:34:28

All I can say is thank the Lord I am not the only one with this problem. And they seem to appear overnight. I look at myself in the mirror every morning and an old witch looks back at me!

Dico63 Tue 21-Feb-17 11:34:36

I'm feeling so much better after reading all your comments, I get quite a crop of dark hair on my chin and top lip, I have tried tweezers but there is just too many of them so now have to use a razor or hair removal cream. I laugh about it now and my husband likes to bring it up with others how hairy I am.

Ramblingrose22 Tue 21-Feb-17 11:34:38

NanKate - you're lucky to have just the one unwanted hair. My chin sprouts about half a dozen of them.

When I use my magnifying mirror to check, I see that my cheeks have a fine blonde down all over. I have to hope that the cheek hairs don't grow longer and darken or I'll have a full dark beard.

Patsy429 Tue 21-Feb-17 11:48:59

I'm quite fair and my husband once asked me what the fur was growing on my face - very fine downy hair but my daughters always tell me when I'm hairy and off I go to my threading session. Works a treat. Daughters are the best to tell you the truth!

I hate selfies, but I forced myself to take one on holiday with my husband on my phone.

When I looked at it, I saw a really long ginger hair coming out of my chin which I had never noticed IRL. I must have been walking round with a one-hair beard for weeks! I also have a bristle on the other side which pops out every now and then.

These are the things nobody tells you about ageing. Someone in a facebook group I'm in started telling someone off for saying she felt old, saying 'age is just a state of mind'. I'm assuming she is young enough for her facial hair not yet to have gone rogue!

clare1608 Tue 21-Feb-17 12:37:17

So nice to see others sharing this problem. It makes us all feel better I think. I have always been blessed plagued with plenty of dark body and facial hair, since my teenage hormones arrived. Mediterranean ancestry gave me olive skin which tans beautifully but comes with plenty of hair. And with the menopause it only got worse. DH is kind and careful about what he says but does shy from telling me when I need to pluck. I have done it all -bleaching, plucking, electrolysis, waxing (forearms) and epilating.

And now it is getting harder as my eyesight gets worse. The magnifying mirror has to be stronger and I worry as I miss more and more of the strays. I will have to have a chat with my DD, who has the same problems, and find myself an understanding beautician now I have moved away from my previous electrolysis angel.

Is it time for laser treatment?

pollyperkins Tue 21-Feb-17 13:04:57

I have my etebrows and chin threaded avery 6 wks or so and use tweezers in between. My husband has a habitof telling me AFTER a social occasion asin 'did tou know you have a long hair on your Chin ' just after a posh meal out with friends! 'Why didnt you tell me sooner?' I ask.' 0nly just noticed tonight!' Grrr!

minxie Tue 21-Feb-17 13:13:02

you want to start worrying when you find a two inch nipple hair
Now that's freaky. Sadly I wasn't the one to notice it sad

Craftycat Tue 21-Feb-17 13:21:48

I'm sure these rogue hairs pop up & grow overnight. I use a magnifying mirror to do my make up every morning & for weeks there will be nothing then all of a sudden one pops out & is quite long.

My friend's GD asked her in a very loud voice at the supermarket checkout why she had a nasty long black hair growing on her chin!

Oh the joys of getting older!

I bought an IPL machine Philips and have never looked back. Hardly ever have to check now. I've had facial hair problems with very dark hair, although I am fair skinned, since I was a teenager. I'm now 71. Bought the machine 18 months ago after successful IPL sessions in beauty parlour. They were very expensive. The machine was around £300. Its only disadvantage is that it doesn't work on white hair since it relies on the melamin in the hair to kill the root. You have to shave first which I'd never done before and found very scary but it's been fine. Other advantage is you can do underarms and legs too. Works for me.

PenJK50 Tue 21-Feb-17 13:30:37

I have a lip and chin wax every few weeks which I also top up midway with the odd pluck. However all other body hair seems to diminish as the years go on - or am I unusual. Underarm hairs nearly disappeared and leg hairs doing similarly.

Diggingdoris Tue 21-Feb-17 13:41:58

Oh dear, I think I'd better have another look in the mirror. I've been poorly with flu for a week so I had not looked closely in the mirror. But this morning when I looked there were five very white whiskers on my top lip which got the tweezer treatment. I've never really examined my chin but I certainly will now.

maryeve Tue 21-Feb-17 13:56:49

I have this theory that the lack of hairs on my legs and underarms which used be really thick have decided to come up and party on my face instead !!! Else the 2 or 3 hairs that used to adorn my chin have decided to rebel and call in the troops in revenge to mowing them away for years.200 pulled from face and neck this morning grrrrr.

Dharmacat Tue 21-Feb-17 14:04:13

Fingertips are working over my chin and neck as I am reading all the posts which are making me search for the little beasties ! Use Nair facial cream every couple of weeks for top lip and chin area but the pesky witch whiskers appear in solo defiance between treatments. Could not be without my tweezers as they are useful if the Nair cream has not dealt sternly enough with the odd bristle.
Lupatria, tend to do as you if I am in a hurry - reach for a disposable razor and cream after a few days.

Hi ladies ,. Life is so strangely annoying!! Well into the seven tens ...And yes also around mouth,. My eyebrows are developing almost black long hairs , which I pluck out ! But I have always been blonde so how come these are black?
Also I brought one of those wizzit s maybe two years ago ...But only use it once in two to three months ,. But it's not working so well now? Any advice on this ?hmm have replaced batteries!

Corncob Tue 21-Feb-17 14:40:07

This is very common. I have one sprout hair on my chin it is blonde so not so noticeable.Reading this thread I have just pulled it out, knowing it will soon be back. Time to worry is when we start to sprout a beard.

Jaycee55 Tue 21-Feb-17 15:01:51

Just to make you smile, my mother was told by my youngest son she wasn't a proper Granny because she didn't have any whiskers!

Marieeliz Tue 21-Feb-17 15:36:26

My friend, who is 80, hardly has any body hair at all. Its so annoying I am blonde but get black hairs on my chin and the odd one on my neck. I go for electrolysis every two weeks, if I leave it longer I have to pluck them and have been told not to do this as you get ingrowing hairs. When I go on holiday I take wax strips. I was looking at the epilators but do not fancy shaving. I had a wizz it no idea where it is now.

kathryn489 Tue 21-Feb-17 15:49:07

I am 39 and battle the chin sprigs I call them hormonal hairs as they start fair so you don't see them then go black over night!

NonnaJ1964 Tue 21-Feb-17 16:03:17

Why is it you think you have tweeted all the wee hairs then you find one big horrible long one 2 days later !!

Funnygran Tue 21-Feb-17 16:29:05

Oh dear, can sympathise here. A good light, reading glasses and magnifying mirror are essential for tweezing. DD bought me something from Amazon that she had been using - basically like a bendy spring which you roll over the hairs and it pulls them out. A bit painful but effective. However she also uses it on her top lip, I tried it once but never ever again ? Yet my eyebrows which I plucked into oblivion in the 60's never need tidying up.
