Or should I just give up?

Someone can look cool, even if they are dressed in a way that doesn't appeal to you.

When I go to do my weekly shopping I see a very elderly lady, who obviously was always good looking. She is immaculately dressed, if a bit frilly and frou-frou, and has curly white hair in a 1980s style and is beautifully made-up. She pushes one of those four wheeled shopping bags for support. Now I can hear at least half of you wrinkling your noses, muttering mutton dressed as lamb etc. But she has a certain something about her, her air, her carriage, that she is so completely comfortable in her skin and in her clothes and whenever I see her, I admire her. To me she has 'cool'

I think cool can be clothing but cool can be applied to all sorts of things . I still think style is harder to have than cool .

Actually, isn't 'cool' an old fashioned word now? As if I'd know. grin

I agree N&g - style is the thing. I ain't got that either. sad

I don't think Lumley or Dench look cool, particularly, but then everybody has their own idea of 'cool' I think they dress well, expensively and appropriately.

MOnica - I know what you mean. Most of the women my age here dress like me for shopping, in their 'best' of 20 years ago. But occasionally I see a very elegant woman of my age in the supermarket, and I think, could I be bothered to keep up like that?
Here's an example of an elegant 82 yr old:

I think it's the incredibly posh accent and silky-smooth voice that make Joanna Lumley seem 'classy'. If she didn't have those she'd be considered quite ordinary - tarty even! grin

My body shape has "changed" since I gave up smoking, plus the age thing (hurtling towards 59 with all the grace and elegance of a hippo on a skateboard)

Very hard to look either good or cool if you look like a letter "S" when you stand sideways.sadblush

Just seem to be all bum & tum lately.

Angus Young is the only male over the age of ten that should be allowed to wear shorts and a blazer

Elegran Wed 14-Jun-17 18:06:17

That's the one, Mawbroon If I had thought that I might ever want to find it again, I'd have paid more attention to it. As it was, I couldn't move past it fast enough.

Poor sad FrankMoss go back to bed.

Ps I'm as bad for commenting. In answer to bee63 I never looked cool in the first place and I'm too old to start now. I'd much rather look happy than cool. Now there's somthing to aim for.....now let me look at FrankMoss's list again NOT

Two weeks ago DH, DD and I enjoyed a lovely sunny day by sitting in the centre of our local town with our antique stall at a special event street market.

All of us commented that on this hot day, by far the stylish and coolest (in every sense) people we were seeing were ladies of really quite an advanced age.

Two that stick in my mind were one very elderly lady, frail and with a stick, who made beige look good with a light lacy jacket over a cap sleeved top and midi skirt, all different shades of beige that blended beautifully.her hair was immaculate and she was lightly made up. Another lady, who looked nearly as old was tall, large and stately was wearing a long flowing red silk shirt with big yellow parrots on it, over matching plain red trousers and a striking sun hat.

Compared with younger women of all ages in their spaghetti strapped tops and boiled lobster skin and crumpled dresses, elderly women came out as by far the most stylish and 'cool'.

I have reported Frank's contribution.

GDs wear ripped jeans and I assume that is what it means for teenagers to be 'cool'. For me, if comfortable is 'cool' then I hope I look cool in linen-mix crops, white vest under a checked overshirt and my ever-comfy Hotter sandals. Showing too much elderly flesh would be seriously un-cool.

I like the advanced style website and I absolutely loved the film. I think it's positive to do things you enjoy, and if you're into fashion then there's no need to conform once you reach a certain age grin
Absolutely possible to look cool over 50, 60, 70 ...

M0nica Wed 19-Jul-17 09:01:32

Primrose65 Hoorah, I too love the Advanced Style website and film, but when I have mentioned it on GN, other people have rubbished it because those on it are rich, or dress outrageously or some other reason.

I am never going to dress like the women (and DH is never going to dress like the men (sadly))on Advanced Style, but just looking at all those older women, or should I say some very old women, cocking a snook at what is normally considered age appropriate for the over 80s and dressing in an outrageous fashion, just lifts my spirits.

Luckylegs9 Wed 19-Jul-17 22:18:33

Don't particularly want to look 'cool', but you can be extremely fashionable and look fabulous over 50 or 70. It has taken most of my adult life to realise what really works for me. We are not limited to dressing age suitable as our parents were, just have what looks good on us and go for it.

Jalima1108 Wed 19-Jul-17 22:28:10

I am always boiling hot even without a 'big scarf' around my neck, however 'cool' it looks.

And I am 20+ years past 50

Being cool would be wonderful.
