Or should I just give up?

Jalima1108 Wed 19-Jul-17 22:38:13

Is the woman in the advanced style link in a white shirt and black trousers supposed to look cool?

That looks like me on a bad day when I have just been slobbing around.

I agree... Jalima

So there is one photograph on the Advanced Style website that you think is not all its cracked up to be.

How many photos are there on the site?

FarNorth Thu 20-Jul-17 11:13:13

I thought she was the coolest one on there!

First, have an honest look at your figure. Crop tops? Uh, no. After that, dress to suit your personality. Once a rock chick, always a rock chick, right? Look at Debbie Harry - she's 70! Or Chrissie Hynde, who found her style years ago and has stuck with it. Nuff said.

I wish I could find a style and make it my own but I've been trying for years and haven't found it yet - I change my look (hate that expression) with the wind. The same with hair. You'd think I'd have found the best style for me years ago but no, I've just made an appointment to get a 'messy bob' cut in the hope that this will be it but I doubt it will be.

I'll tell you a good thing - you don't have to be thin to be cool. Look at Judi Dench and Angel whatsit off the Chateau programme. Neither of them are skinny but they're definitely cool.

I don't think I've ever looked cool, so I'm not expecting to start now. Comfy does for me.

I have seen some gransnet members (in the flesh and in photos ) who are all over 50 and look absolutely amazing ! So yes it is perfectly possible to look great at 50,60 and 70+

I'm turned 70 but still like to look nice. A friend of my daughters told her she thought I was really smart and well dressed, that does me!

Is it possible to look 'cool' over 50?

It depends how you define "cool". Also, at 50, perhaps one would rather look something else, like elegant or serene or aging hippyish.

I know people in their fifties, sixties, and seventies who always look cool by my definition, possibly not by that of a twenty-year-old.

gillybob Thu 09-Nov-17 12:00:08

Oh crikey I don't want to be elegant or serene Baggs wouldn't mind being "aging hippy" though.

In fact at the minute I would settle for just looking "okay for her age" grin

How you are defines cool. Clothes are just superficial stuff. Grayson Perry springs to mind. Outrageous clothes and makeup, which I dislike, but it’s how he is with it. Yep, very cool.

If you want your style to be 'aging hippy' make a start now.
Decide exactly the look you want. The next time you buy some clothing, keep that look in mind and gradually build up the look.
Unless you have a money to throw away this will take time, but piece by piece it can be done. If your not sure of your aging hippy look, spent time on eBay, masses of ideas on there.

Of course, it’s possible to look very good after 50! It’s important to stay healthy, since being healthy is always beautiful! And there are many creams for wrinkles (Awaderm and others). They will prevent your skin from aging. So, you shouldn’t worry! Here’s the main thing you should know: you’re already beautiful!

No chance , never looked 'cool' when I young ?

Mania Fri 15-Dec-17 11:40:23

Yes, it's really possible, I saw many of such women and I thinks that I'm one of them too smile
I don't think that in any ways you can return your beauty from the young years but in my opinion you can always look cool in every age. But for this you need to care really about your body, I mean that healthy lifestyle, especially good diet and various physical activities are really helpful for keeping yourself healthy and attractive. Some body modification procedures like coolsculpting mediluxe.ca/en/ can be effective too for getting rid of too much wrinkles and making general look better, however you should be really careful with them and don't put much on such methods, in other case your body can look really unnatural.
And the other main thing is your style in clothes, hair, accessories, make up etc. Your age doesn't mean that you should wear only that clothes which will make your body unattractive and even older, sadly I see many women who make this and it's frustrating...confused
I really recommend you to look through such types of articles www.liveabout.com/fashion-for-women-over-50-1264131 for useful ideas, also you can use examples of other fashionable women in their 50s.
In my case all that tips really worked smile

mania you sound like a rep for cosmetic procedures

You cant and wouldn't want to dress like a teenager of course but you can certainly take an interest, look nice and dress on trend. If you want to of course. But certainly no need to resort to crimpolene and nylon blouses once you hit 50. Or 60 or 70 or 80 come to that. 50? Thats the new 40.

Luckygirl Fri 15-Dec-17 15:57:23

Who cares? - indeed kitty!

NotTooOld Fri 15-Dec-17 16:44:43

Surely cool is not trying too hard, not wearing what others think you should wear, and definitely not adhering to any silly 'dress code'.

I'm still trying.

Having seen so many sites (including Gransnet) offering suggestions of 'suitable' clothes for the over 50s. I have come to the conclusion that those words are a synonym for saying 'clothes for frumps'.

What you wear has everything to do with who you are and nothing to do with how old you are.

Give up! Do your own thing; wear purple (or pink or beige) (well maybe not beige), swear, drink, get a toy boy, smoke cocktail cigarettes in a long holder, wear PJs to the pub, drive a sports car or a jeep, listen to Def Leppard on full volume at home, pick you nose, sit down for the National Anthem, live on Takeaways, and dye your hair green.

Never mind 50 what about 70? I think having good posture really helps and is good for the back too. Also not being overweight. And apart from that it's comfort and practicality.
Met a lady this am who helps out with a mother and baby group and she is definitely cool but I guess over 70 but wearing little heels and very smart.
Never mind smart, I struggle to look presentable!
