Dressing gowns/housecoats

I hate wrap around dressing gowns, preferring instead a straight, coat style garment. Have searched almost every web site I can think of but they all seem to think that everyone wants to be bunched up in a huge bulky thing, each to their own of course but all I want is a simple straightish, (wouldn't mind a bit of elegance ) robe that doesn't truss me up like a fur ball. Am I being a bit too trivial?

My Hub can't look at me in my onesie . Says I look like an oversized toddler. He's just jealous if you ask me . grin

David Nieper does lovely full length dressing gowns, but they are expensive.

As I write I am wrapped in a huge wrap around faux fur dressing gown. The only thing for feeling so grotty, and couldn’t care less what I look like.

I couldn't find a long enough dressing gown so my Sis sent me a onesie from London. I love it. It's not too tight and not too loose. It has a hood and keeps me pins lovely and warm. smile

jackyB
how often do you buy a dressing gown
I've bought 2 in the past 3 years. If/when they start to look faded/worn, out they go, just like all my other clothes.

Petra, when I was a lot younger I had a black brushed fabric dressing gown with a hood and a zip and a white twisted cord belt. I fancied that I looked a bit like a monk, wish I could get another one!
Thank you for all the leads, I'm going to follow them up, glad to see that I'm not odd after all - I was beginning to think that huge, fluffy, tied in the middle dressing gowns was the norm.

Try House of Bath

It is time, I think, to get out my very warm and cosy purple wrap around dressing gown. It is a sort of shaggy fleece material and makes me look enormous but I feel so warm and comfortable and like Nelliemoser I find it hard to get out of it!

How often do you buy a dressing gown? I have a couple hanging on the bathroom door and I wear one usually until after breakfast, but I haven't bought a new one for yonks. In fact, at least one of the ones I do have was a freebie from somewhere.

I've never even thought about the pros and cons of wraparounds but now you mention it, they do tend to fall open at inconvenient moments.

I have a lovely soft warm and fleecy wrap around M&S dressing gown for these winter nights . I find it hard to get out of it.
Mine is a deep pinky red which is one of "my colours".

Annodomini now that is an old dressing gown!
St Michael indeed.

I have a plaid dressing gown so ancient that it has a St Michael label on it. I prefer to throw on a pair of red fleece pyjamas over my nightie when I get up in the morning. These are known to the family as my Santa outfit.

I don't think I'd like to feel all closed in by a onesie. I prefer to be somewhat 'free' in my night wear.

BlueBelle Fri 10-Nov-17 22:14:03

I ve never worn one seems I m missing something ?

rubysong Fri 10-Nov-17 21:36:51

Fleecy Tony the Tiger onesie for me. Yes, I look a twit, and it is a faff to go to the loo but it's only DH who sees me in it and I am so cosy! When I had a dressing gown I always had cold legs. The onesie was bought for a comedy item in a concert but I have grown to love it and wouldn't be without it now.

Hmm - dressing gowns.
I have a white towelling one (hotel type) that is now very old so I put it on when I'm colouring my hair.
I have a very lightweight green wrap-around one for summer.
I once admired a friend's very glamorous red velour dressing gown with a contrasting collar and she bought me one the same as a gift. She is a tall raven haired beauty and it looked wonderful on her! Maybe not the ideal look for me, but I occasionally give it an airing. hmm
And then there is this M&S one that I wear most often - a perfect gift from my daughter a few years ago and still looks like new.

I have a long dressing gown from M&S it’s made of a nice thin fleece material with a zip, very cosy but not at all bulky.

MissAdventure Fri 10-Nov-17 20:15:12

I have an M&S one which zips up. Its lovely material, warm but thin. I bought my mum one for Christmas, then saw one exactly the same in a charity shop and got it for myself.

Nigella looks gorgeous in her wrap around silky number. ?

House of Bath's latest brochure have a floral patterned dark blue quilted dressing gown about 46 inches long. Me, I love the wrap around thick fleecy dressing gowns but has anyone noticed that like so many products nowadays they are getting smaller, or in this case shorter. I prefer my dressing gowns to be nearly floor length and spent months searching for one last year but gave up in the end and settled for something 48" long.

aitch l hope this thread helps you to find the dressing gown of your dreams; For my part, after 12 working days in a row, l am delighted to be wrapped round in my lovely fleecy turquoise M&S dressing gown ...yes, that and 2 glasses of rose down and not yet 6 o'clock .... so glad of a weekend off!!! Tbh, l didn't like my dressing gown at first, it was a Christmas present. I found it bulky and over-warm to begin with, but nearly two years later l have adjusted to it and it is synonymous with relaxation and comfort now.

I have a nice cosy DG from M&S that I bought last year.
It is plain with a zip snd nice deep pockets for all my bitssmile

For those that don't like zips either what about a kaftan style

whitewave Fri 10-Nov-17 17:33:41

Yes I always have David nieper dressing gowns. The ones with zip or buttons are splendid. Velour is my choice, but there are lots of others.

lemongrove Fri 10-Nov-17 17:30:44

Petra I just knew you were a glamour puss.smile

Smithy Fri 10-Nov-17 17:23:50

I don't care which way they fasten as long as they are lovely and cosy to put on after a bath. Only in winter though.

hildajenniJ Fri 10-Nov-17 17:21:17

Petra the M&Co dressing gowns are not only in animal print, but also in a cable print too. In fact I've just looked at the website. They've got lots of zipped ones. I really fancy a black ribbed fleece one which is just new in.
