To cut or not to cut?

I am amazed to find myself posting in Style and Beauty, because I have neither neither and I am mostly pretty careless of how I look!

Anyway, here I am!

I have more or less straight (but a bit of a kink) below shoulder length very dark brown hair - no grey! - honest guv, all me own brown hair!

I am thoroughly sick of my fringe as my hair is very fine and the fringe does not lie down but flips upwards especially if there is the tiniest hint of damp in the air. It looks OK briefly when first washed, but then just looks a mess.

I have tried growing it out, but I just get even more hair going in crazy directions! - so I abandon ship and get the fringe cut once more.

When I was younger, I had a sort of urchin cut, but I suspect that will not look quite so good on a more droopy face. And I have large glasses to accommodate a large varifocal - I am very short-sighted and have marked astigmatism, so am not prepared to go for smaller glasses and sacrifice the ability to see - it's bad enough as it is!!

So........what to do? Cut it all off??? My aim is to have something that requires nil effort on my part! I just want to run a comb through it in the morning and be good to go.

Ah Cherry - backcombing - I remember backcombing - I will give it a go - and a feathered fringe. A very good wheeze as my fringe, in spite of being fine hair, is quite heavy.

luzdoh - that is just what I want to avoid - faffing around every morning! Too many other great things to be doing!

I'm thinking I might have mine cut now. It was short, blonde and spiky for years, until I saw someone I'd been at school with who said "You look exactly the same! Even the hair!" I decided to grow it, and grow it I have, but it looks ruddy awful these days.

Luckygirl as you keep your hair tied
back/ up have you played around with the style?

Coiled tendrils round the hair line look pretty.

A bit of back combing at the crown gives a bit if height distracting from flat fringe

Fringes can also be feathered rather than heavy. ?

Luckygirl - Varifocal challenge reading music - me too

luzdoh Tue 06-Feb-18 20:13:02

Listen to Ladygracie - Don't cut it off! Don't be fooled by the short haired photos - they take ages to arrange, a ton of "product" and need washing, drying and styling every day - then it rains and you look like your dad. Long hair is so easy! It doesn't need washing every day. Putting it up in a bobbly bundle however you like makes it curl without even deliberately curling it. I love long hair. But then my mother would not let me have my hair below my ears and was so rude about it that I didn't dare let it grow till after she died.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 06-Feb-18 17:13:15

I too need the ability to get up, brush and go. The answer for me is a really, really good hair cut. It sounds expensive but deduct products, perms, colour and it seems reasonable.

Luckygirl Tue 06-Feb-18 13:35:27

I virtually never wear my long hair loose. It is always tied up or plaited.

Just bumped into an old friend who has had her hair cut short - she hates it and can't wait for it to grow again!

DiscoGran Tue 06-Feb-18 13:31:40

I'm with seacliff. Thicker hair is more manageable in a longer style. Keeping a short cut looking good on thick hair is harder work!

Willow500 Tue 06-Feb-18 13:09:35

I had about 6 inches cut off my hair last week - it gets to a certain length and then starts to break so it definitely needed doing. Unfortunately I've been ill since and have a huge crop of cold sores all round my mouth so have had no interest in trying to titivate it - a bag would be a better investment grin My lovely hairdresser just sent me a huge bouquet of flowers with a get well note - so unexpected and so thoughtful!

I have thick bushy hair, the opposite of you I think. It is much easier to look after now it's grown just above my shoulders. The weight pulls it down a bit. I can wash and dry it, and it will last about 5 days.

When it was short, I had to wash it every day, or it looked awful. Flat on top, and a mess. Now I tie it back if going for a windy walk. I like feeling the swish of my hair when longer too.

The varifocal challenge for me is reading music. Everything else is fine.

Jalima1108 Mon 05-Feb-18 20:40:53

I've now opted for a sort of sloping to one side fringe
I think it's called asymmetrical, at least that's what I call it as mine is sloping to one side.

However, that was not the intention; I cut it myself the other day.

Witzend Mon 05-Feb-18 11:53:52

Personally I think short hair looks better when you are past a certain age. I had long hair for many years but wouldn't go back to it. I suppose it depends on the shape of your face, but I think long hair can appear to drag your face down.

I find the best way to give my fine hair a good lift - I don't use any products - is to dry it largely by brushing it upside down. Just a bit of right-way-up at the end. Only takes a few mins.

OurKid1 Mon 05-Feb-18 11:26:52

PS Have you tried one of those 'meant to be weatherproof' hairsprays. I think Elnett is best.

OurKid1 Mon 05-Feb-18 11:25:43

Your hair and your eyesight sound just like mine! My fringe used to hit the top of my specs then do it's own thing. At one state I had a sort of gutter running along the top of my specs!
I've now opted for a sort of sloping to one side fringe, layered as it makes it look a bit thicker, and use some sort of product on it - at the moment John Frieda it was on special offer because it seems to work. I also blow dry it using a small brush and curling the ends under.
On the subject of specs (Yeah, I know you weren't asking, but still ...), I'm also very short-sighted, minus 10 in one eye and minus 8 in the other, with astigmatism in both, so have a complicated prescription. I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to ditch my large specs and get smaller ones. Somehow the optician managed to get all that plus varifocals into a small space. I also invest in extra-thin lenses which are brilliant - cost a fortune, but worth it. Means my hair doesn't interfere with my specs and people don't believe that I'm really as blind as a bat with impossible fine, has a mind of its own hair.
Good luck.

Good post mellow ?

The other thing about styles of hair, is that the face is important! Like our older faces or not, some can get away with a pixie cut and some can’t.IMHO you need a very ‘soft’ featured face for it.
The other extreme is long hair ( worn down) and add a pair of glasses and the face can look ‘lost’.
That’s why medium length hair, especially with layers looks better for most faces.

Yellowmellow Mon 05-Feb-18 10:22:31

I know very few people who are happy with their hair! Mine has always been fine and flyaway. Over the years its been long and short. I find short hair very hard to manage, as its so hard to get volume! I use Argan oil sparingly and maybe now only about twice and month as I find if I use that too often my hair gets oily and lifeless. After my friend lost her hair through chemotherapy I always swore I would never moan about my hair again. I think unless we are never going to go out in the wet/damp weather (and many a woman won't!) we are never going to have the 'perfect' hair...just embrace what you've got! Life's too short

Lilypops Mon 05-Feb-18 08:44:53

Hi Gabriella, Thankyou very much for the size and info on the Instyler, I think as you pointed out that it may not work on short layered hair which is mine at the moment, I am growing my layers out and when I have,I think the styler would work for me, Thanks again ,

Jalima1108 Sun 04-Feb-18 23:26:25

Nelliemoser my hair was rather like that when I was 2 only mine was blonde.
Sadly the curls turned to unruly and the blonde turned to brown.

Nelliemoser Sun 04-Feb-18 23:24:15

I keep my hair very short because of the spiralling out of factor. Me with dark curls around 2 yrs.

Now I am older and my hair is short and frizzy I look very much like the older woman my Great Grand mother C1910 like this.

Be careful of what hair style you choose.

Maggieanne Sun 04-Feb-18 21:11:40

Has ANYONE used Tresemme Beauty-Full for fine hair. You use the conditioner first, leave on for a minute or so and rinse then wash. Sounds odd I know but it works for me. Love the short hair styles, but you know what they say, ".........shame about the face!", my face that is!

gulligranny Sun 04-Feb-18 18:48:33

My hair has got very thin and fine and I find that a short spiky razor cut has made it look as if I've got far more hair than I actually do have. And plenty of product, of course!

GabriellaG Sun 04-Feb-18 18:35:48

Hi Lilypops
The barrel is the thicker of the two that were sold (last year) on QVC.
May I say that IMO if the barrel is TOO thick then short hair would end up with no curl as not enough curl to wind round it. Hang on and I'll measure the circumference...right, it's 4.5" around the barrel and measured from side to side when laid flat, the barrel measures 1.5".
Yes, the barrel and brush are attached at the narrow end.
What happens us like tweezers, you grip the hair in between barrel and brush and press the two 'arms' together. The barrel automatically rotates when you grip both 'handles' together.
Not supposed to use product on hair before use. I sometimes use Frizz Ease after but there's no need as it leaves a great shine. My hair is fairly thick and strong...and coloured.
Look on YouTube for the QVC demo and others. ☺
I might put a pic on here of my own hair after using it...not showing my face, naturally.

Lilypops Sun 04-Feb-18 17:59:26

Gabriella. Is the brush attached to the barrel, ?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 04-Feb-18 17:59:02

Is an 'urchin cut' is the same as a 'pixie cut'? I think I'd call my hairstyle the latter. It's fairly thick and wavy (not as straight as I always wanted) and all it needs is a comb at the beginning of the day and then I run my fingers through it. The fringe part has always been difficult as I think that they look better straight. My face is droopier than it used to be so I'll never look as good as I did in my 30s but I think it's a fairly flattering style.
