Clothes on TV selling channels

What do other Gransnet members think about the clothes for offer on the TV selling channels? While having my morning cuppa I’ve been viewing what I can only discribe as ‘horrors’ a blouse for nearly £50 that I think could have come straight from the late Queen Mother’s wardrobe, a black dress also available in school uniform green which was miles shorter at the front than the back and a blue andwhite ankle length dress that I thought was a nightie.Of course all the presenters drool over them as gorgeous but as for me, no thank you

I amuse myself by watching these channels sometimes. I can't believe how much the presenters have to say about each item. Sometimes one of them will be wearing something that they are selling and her pal will be full of praise. I usually shout at the screen "It looks bl**dy awful, take a look in the mirror woman!" If I find myself starting to think that maybe I will send for something I change the channel quickly in case I succumb!! shock

I agree it can be hilarious especially when the presenters’ patter gets ridiculous.
However....I have bought Skechers from QVC since our local Brantano shoe shop closed and they have honoured their 30day unconditional refund policy on occasion.
Horses for courses I suppose.

I buy a lot from QVC ,its brilliant having the chance to try it on with different things and see where it will fit into my wardrobe.I've had no issues with quality ,they do some really well known brands ,of course not all of it suits everyones taste .I have always been able to recommend them for clothes and have often had compliments about their clothes .I too have sent stuff back within the 30 days with no problem at all .

Quite frankly since shopping, including clothes shopping has become too much of an effort because of ongoing mobility issues, I have turned to certain catalogues, and yes,QVC............ which have in fact proved quite a boon.
Clothes and all manner of goods can be easily tried on in the comfort of one`s home, especially trying them with differing items already in one`s wardrobe, and the fact you have the time to ponder, plus of course, their guaranteed money back no quibble has proved invaluable.
An especial help when testing out various cosmetics for example........where else can you take back a half used jar of something and get your full refund?
However their P & P charges are rather steep it must be said.
As for quality and prices, having had my finger burned occasionally I have learnt which companies to trust and indeed I find them invaluable.
Whilst the presenters have become "distant pals" when I have been stuck in bed for weeks!!!They have given me many a smile!!Whilst yes some of their patter truly grates!
Also one can easily get carried away and spend more than one really should..............but hey we walk this way but once and shrouds do NOT have pockets!!
A case of where ever one chooses to shop.....You pay your money and you take your choice. These shopping channels have their place for some but of course for those that can go and enjoy both window shopping and a browse indoors nothing beats a wander around the Shopping Centre........if your purse is nicely padded of course!

Most of my clothes come from shopping channels - mainly QVC. I admit some are awful but I often look at myself and think nothing I'm wearing (including underwear) came from a shop! I too like being able to try things on at home with other clothes to decide whether they really suit me. I'm not too successful with shoes though having strange feet but at least you can wear these around the house before deciding they hurt then send them back.

Moocow Wed 25-Apr-18 17:28:50

What are their deliveries like? I hate the idea of having problems with orders being left on the doorstep while the driver dashes to the next house. Can you track orders online?

Panache Thu 03-May-18 14:21:25

Moocow........... indeed yes,you are kept informed by QVC themselves and yes you can track orders.
My only complaint with buying from them is what I think their excessive P&P charges.
I don`t know if I am alone in this?

paddyann Thu 03-May-18 14:51:52

Panache I'd rather pay their p&p than take an hour to get to the nearest shop and spend ages looking for something...then repeat the process if I decide I dont like it as much once I'm home .I use Hermes for returns and they're picked up fromhome an dare reasonably priced ,certainly cheaper than the PO

Panache Thu 03-May-18 15:41:32

I see your point paddyman, you are probably right.
It is certainly very convenient ,taking the fretting out of all that scurrying around looking ........and paying..... for parking or missing that last `bus!!!

hildajenniJ Thu 03-May-18 20:20:44

I buy from QVC. My favourite purchase was a coat from Dennis Basso, several years ago now, grey suede with a faux fur lining. It's so warm. I have some tops from Kim & Co too. It's very convenient, and returning items is very easy. I have always disliked shopping, and much prefer buying from the TV.

Niobe Thu 03-May-18 20:58:04

I have some items from Kim and Co and my winter coat is from QVC's Centigrade range. It is a hooded faux sheepskin knee length coat and it washes in the machine. Only cost me about £55 4 years ago, a bargain.
If you are a larger or smaller size it is worth looking on the QVC website for their clearance items, some have considerable reductions.

vickymeldrew Fri 04-May-18 10:14:45

I love watching QVC with the mute button on imagining what us being said about each item. It’s definitely a skill! (I know, I’m a very sad person). I have to say the customer service is excellent as of course they wouldn’t survive as a company if it wasn’t. Agree some of the clothes are hideous and would make me look like an extra from Les Miserables....

Blinko Fri 04-May-18 10:22:21

Friends of mine always shop at QVC. I thought it wasn't for me, but reading these posts, I'm having a rethink. Thanks everyone.

Irenelily Fri 04-May-18 10:22:39

I rarely look at shopping channels, sometimes see clothes displayed on morning ITV. I usually make a note if I like something for when I go to the shops. We have a good - not too large - shopping centre within easy reach and I like to go and browse - have a coffee and sometimes buy. A small “me time”pleasure. Occasionally I’ll go with one of my daughters if they are visiting, but mostly make my best purchases alone.

GrammaH Fri 04-May-18 10:25:50

I agree a lot of the clothes seen on the shopping channels look awful and they are also ridiculously expensive. However, we have a large QVC shop in our local town and one of my most loved and most admired dresses came from there. It's a silver grey lace number, very fitted with long sleeves and I always feel at my best in it when I wear it for special occasions. The price? £9.50!! smile

henetha Fri 04-May-18 10:28:07

In my humble opinion QVC is marvellous. Everything is good quality, not everything is expensive, and their service is excellent. You just need to get to know which makes are best, either by watching regularly or by checking out their website.

Yellowmellow Fri 04-May-18 10:35:17

I don't buy from a certain shopping channel....that also expects you to pay return postage, for their overpriced, quite often poor quality clothing. I have bought some items over the years which have been well known brands, but on the whole the clothing, often described as 'fabulous' 'great quality', by the presenters is just a load of tatt.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Fri 04-May-18 11:28:50

I sometimes look at these channels to see the clothes and often hideous jewellery - much too big and jazzy for my simple tastes.
A few years back I sent off for 'a nail system' of a set of items to brush on your nails which were intended to get them long, strong and glamorous. It lived up to the hype -never had my nails looked so fabulous. Sadly the item was only available intermittently but for a while my nails were really admirable.
Plus, I once got a concertina-style wallet which I still use.

Panache Fri 04-May-18 12:08:24

I think what you might be saying lovebeigecardigan is that "You pays your money and you make a choice"

Having had overall good service and some very nice goods from QVC........ranging from clothes, jewellery, household articles, shoes, hair and skin creams.........I cannot fault them.Where else do you get a 30 day money back guarantee on everything plus make up which can be happily returned...... even if the jar is half used?

In time one learns which Names to purchase and others best avoiding, although again it is usually down to the money you wish to spend, there are prices for us all.

As for the "gift of the gab" from the presenters I find it extremely funny and it has entertained me when bed bound and not much going on in my life!!!!

"Ideal World" although similar to QVC I learned very quickly to by pass, though I guess again ........it offers "Horses for courses" and it is up to each one to purchase or simply swith off!

Saggi Fri 04-May-18 12:15:23

Yes Mawbroom I have bought my Skechers from QVC... and their customer service is excellent ... mostly don’t like the clothes. But can’t go wrong with shoes you know well . I’m a poor sleeper and sometimes turn on this channel in early hours...that’s when you have to be particularly careful not to succumb to rubbish!

Omaoma57 Fri 04-May-18 12:28:35

I agree Panache...Ideal World is a different ballgame altogether. QVC clothing is good quality, usually, and you can wash them, hate them and send back...which I have done! It is definitely horses for courses and anyone with mobility problems....they are a boon.

Kim19 Fri 04-May-18 12:33:44

Never looked at this (these) site. Guess I must be on another planet!

anitamp1 Fri 04-May-18 13:06:28

I agree. I watch some of the presentations, and I find in particular when they do a whole wardrobe on several models, the outfits are sometimes hideous. But I have had a couple of nice tops from QVC. Slightly changing the subject, but still on the fashion theme. Am I alone in thinking Theresa May should sack her dresser? She wears so many short very waisted jackets that do her no favour. But have seen her a couple of times in a much longer line slightly fitted jacket, and it's a very flattering look for her.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 04-May-18 13:45:17

I frequently buy sweaters / cardigans even shirts from M& Co mens' wear sales.. Their small size is plenty big enough and I can get a T shirt underneath the sweaters . I have also done the same at Tesco sales..
I don't go to that many 'I should be so lucky' social events so see no need for evening wear as what I brought when DH was with me is sufficient and not dated.
When I look at what some call fashion I cringe and with a bit of alteration here and there can get away with my 'relics'.
