Hats!

I quite like hats and will wear them, given the right occasion. However looking for a hat for a summer wedding and I have to ask - what is it with the feathers? We laugh at Victorian ladies who could plonk a whole bird on their head, and surely feel sad that birds of paradise paid such a high price in the name of fashion, but seems that we have not come such a long way. I guess that most of the feathers are chicken? Come from China? Harvested in the most cruel way they can think of? Don't know but surely time to move on to other forms or adornment?

As a follow up I have looked online and PETA state that the feathers come from birds that are slaughtered for skin or meat. But it does seem to me that sticking body parts of other animals on our heads is a tad unnecessary.

I agree Telly and a bit silly too.
I dislike wearing formal hats, but don’t mind straw sunhats or pull on woolly hats ( like Compo!) in Winter.
I keep two formal hats for weddings, and dress them up as necessary, but usually just bits of material.

I ve never worn a hat in my life (well I wore a school hat) I really can’t stand them I ve never even wore them for weddings I always think I look ridiculous so not even a winter pull on or summer straw goes on my head

I love hats and wear them throughout the year. The weather determines the style.

And yet, I've never worn a hat to a wedding. There's no rule saying you have to so just don't. Make your own style. If people don't like it, shrug. That's their problem.

I find it astonishing that women our age can appear so hidebound by 'fashion'.

The only hats I wear are my bush hat and a fleece beanie for the cold weather. I didn’t wear a hat to my wedding and told my son I would only come to his if I didn’t have to wear a hat ?! However, having said that, I have a hankering for a nice felt trilby. I tried one once, on a stall at a country show, that fitted beautifully and was a lovely shade of dark blue, but I didn’t think I could justify the expense. Like so many other things I let it go and have regretted it since. I have tried many since, but none suited me as well as that one.

Hats and I just do not mix!!!
Whenever in the far past I have worn one ,usually for funerals.......I get asked if I am unwell?!
That was enough to put me off for ever....... and it has!

I love hats and they do suit me although these days its probably just a golf visor but I buy them in pretty colours. Just bought a new purple diamante studded one.

Hats have never suited me and I envy those who look great in hats. I was forced to wear them in the sun when I lost my hair and also a few years ago I went to a garden party at the Palace. I knew most of the ladies would be wearing hats, so I got one. It looked OK I think but there were some wonderful creations there!

I'd love to wear hats, but with my little round face, I look ridiculous. I do have a hat that I wear in the winter, when it's really cold or snowy. I've never found a style that suits me, and when I try hats on, DH falls about laughing.

I've had a good number of hats in my time and used to find the Breton style with upturned brim suited me best. We seem to have run out of weddings in our family and I'm not likely ever to go to Ascot. So the purple wedding hat in a box on top of my wardrobe must go to a charity shop. I've sometimes tried on fascinators but they just look silly on me. Recently, in the process of de-cluttering, I found seven sunhats and I know of two more unaccounted for. I hope five of them have found good homes from the charity shop. As for beanie hats - they make me look like a clootie dumpling.

I wear hats and caps regularly and love them. The only feather I have is a kind of pheasant tail (I guess) and it completely transforms the black fedora into something decidedly more special. I'm quietly confident the bird in question was not specifically reared for this purpose but -who knows?

I’ve always liked hats, but apart from a straw hat (which I always look ridiculous in, but have to wear in any sun) I don’t wear them. I don’t miss a hat at weddings, but in the winter I seem to see no end of people looking glamorous (and warm!) in fur hats - I’d love one. I did send for a couple, but just looked awful. Oh well!

I love hats, and have quite a collection, yet I've never worn one to a wedding, with feathers or without. I think it's a British thing. Years ago I was invited to a British-Italian wedding in Tuscany. None of the Italian ladies wore hats, only the British ones. Wedding hats are in a league of their own, and are mostly ridiculous.

Love hats and any excuse will do to wear a fancy one.grin It takes a bit of getting used to if you have not worn hats much so if you think they look odd then just keep wearing it in the house until you grow accustomed - and ignore comments from your DH!

Women have always made or wanted pretty and/or stylish things to wear. I suppose that feathers are such a lovely design and such intricate things certainly lend themselves to being used rather than wasted. I am phlegmatic about such things.

LynneB59 Wed 09-May-18 12:42:11

I've never worn a hat (I'm 59). The closest I got was wearing a Juliet cap with a short veil, at my wedding.

Telly Wed 09-May-18 13:02:20

Thinking about it I do wear a lot of hats - winter beanie type for dog walking, summer straw. I did buy a panama a few years ago and I love it! I was just struck by the number with feather adornments in the formal hat section.

Teetime,, ⛳️ A purple diamanté visor sounds lovely , may I ask where you bought it from , I wonder if it would improve my golf ?

Margs Wed 09-May-18 14:27:28

I would love to be able to wear one of those old-fashioned Victorian hats with a wide brim, a veil and a couple of those Mother-of-Pearl hat pins, but......

I'm just 5 foot bang-on, and I'm also 'Triangle-Shaped-Aren't-You-Auntie?" so says my undiplomatic niece.

So, sadly, no hats for me except woolly bobble hats in the winter.

(And aren't those feathery, wispy, Alice Band fascinator things banned at Royal Ascot?)

mimiro Wed 09-May-18 15:13:47

love hats and caps
not so much the large frilly things

mimiro Wed 09-May-18 15:14:48

the hatboxes are beautiful too

mimiro Wed 09-May-18 15:18:06

exotic feather are ones left during molting
at least thast how my friend gathers hers to sell and she must prove where they came from
also many are turkey/chicken feathers that have been dyed and reshaped

grandtanteJE65 Wed 09-May-18 17:03:57

I like hats, but rarely wear them. Usually, I decorate a hat with artificial flowers, or tie a thin scarf round the crown if I feel it needs a little help.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 09-May-18 17:05:57

Im not a very 'hat'person, though have a couple of straw hats to keep off the sun. Being only 5' 2" they make me look like a squat little mushroom ....
However in response to the OP, a friend of mine (a fellow lacemaker) has been working on pieces of lace to make either a fascinator or to trim a hat to wear to her niece's wedding. I can't wait to see the finished item!. So there can be other forms of hat trimming, for those with the imagination and skill to conjure up something different. ? (That wouldn't apply to me, you understand @).

I have a few, all practical. ie some cotton ones with brims to shade my face in hot weather. And some woolly ones for when it's really cold.
I noticed that many people were wearing woolly hats during the cold weather last winter.
They do tend to flatten and ruin your hair though.
