I bought myself some shorts yesterday

I haven't worn shorts for years, but in this heat, trousers are so hot.

They are 1950s style, tailored, dark navy but with a tie belt (not a draw string), with a skirt silhouette but clearly shorts. really quite smart

I have them on this morning and they are so cool. I am not sure whether I would wear them out, unless by the sea but for house and garden wear they are perfect. Thankfully my legs are still in good order and can stand scrutiny.

Catta5 my legs are not wrinkly or veiny. But nor are they long tanned and slim! But DH seems to appreciate them!

Sarahellen - well she was older than me and I’m 65.

Oh how I envy shorts wearers! Your shorts sound very nice MOnica, the sort I might choose for myself if I had the legs for them. My legs have become disfigured over the years due to chronic illness and medication so now they remain hidden, under trousers of floaty maxi-dresses and long skirts. I used to have such shapely legs too, I could cry, but I console myself that they still work and carry me where I want to go, so try not to let it bother me. Not only that, my feet swell occasionally and have become veiny and blotchy so I now have nice feet/nice sandals envy! I have taken to looking at feet that seem beautifully pedicured and wonder what I can do to improve mine. grin

It's sad when you prefer winter clothes that cover up and boots that hide ugly feet, but hey ho. sad

I only wear shorts in my own house and garden.
Short ugly purple veined legs yuk.

I’m 71 now so have learnt to live with them and dress accordingly.

Wear what you wish girls & guys - YOLO
Cannot believe some people on this thread are being so judgy / downright mean

If you're lucky enough to age then wear your scars with pride. If anyone doesn't like what they see then they can look away

Well I am past caring what I look like to others so long as I feel happy in what I'm wearing. My legs are well upholstered but no veins and my derriere although no oil painting, is quite presentable so I really don't give 2 figs about what anyone thinks. I have a tatty pair of old M&S shorts which I've worn all summer along with strappy tops + 2 newer pairs in case the neighbours are looking wink. Also have a short cotton skirt from a french market which has come into its own. I don't usually do skirts...
So ladies, carry on doing your own thing and join me in embracing freedom of legs and flapping of bingo wings grin

I have a lot of visible veins in my legs but I wear knee length skirts and dresses and shorts.
In this weather I wouldn’t think twice about going out to the supermarket in my shorts.

If other people don’t like the look of my legs it’s their problem not mine ?

janeainsworth Wed 25-Jul-18 19:07:26

Crossed posts marmight??

Grandma70s Wed 25-Jul-18 19:16:14

My legs are perfectly smooth, but they are rather too thin now. I prefer not to show them.

It must be nice not to give a damn what you look like, but I do care. Not a lot, but enough to try to show myself in the best light, so I am careful what I wear.

janeainsworth Wed 25-Jul-18 19:30:09

I do give a damn what I look like, Grandma.
I wouldn’t go out if my hair needed washing, and I wouldn’t go out for a meal in a restaurant with dirt from the garden under my fingernails. I prefer to wear eyeliner and mascara at the very least, than go out au naturel.
I wouldn’t like to be thought inappropriately dressed at a wedding or a funeral.
But I can’t do a damn thing about the veins on my legs and it’s too bad if other people notice them and don’t like them.

I dug two pairs of shorts out of the wardrobe this week but I have awful legs - a few varicose veins and red/purple/blue veins all over my feet. Also, after sitting (largely) in the shade with my feet up in the garden - but my feet were in the sun some of the time - I have a sunburn tide mark just above my ankles where my trousers ended. They're nice shorts, fit well but maybe not . . . .

janeainsworth Wed 25-Jul-18 19:48:56

Not being ashamed of your body isn’t the same as not caring what you look like.

Grandma70s Wed 25-Jul-18 19:57:23

janeainsworth, my post wasn’t aimed directly at you. It was a general comment. Perhaps I should have written ‘what one looks like’, rather that ‘what you look like’.

NotAGran55 Wed 25-Jul-18 20:16:57

M0nica you shorts sound perfect. I wonder if you might share the brand with us please ? I’m looking for something smart for a holiday in Austria and my usual ones are a bit too casual for where we are heading .

Was it Pedal Pushers you were thinking of?

Jane10 Wed 25-Jul-18 20:44:32

NotAGran55 going to Austria? Blend in - wear lederhosen! You might as well! grin

I look at it this way: If people don't pay my rent or mortgage and they don't put food on my table or help with any of my other bills, then why should I care what they think of my legs or body shape when I wear shorts? I want to be cool and comfortable so I wear shorts, even though I am 66 years old. Shorts are just fine for everyone, I think. If our legs offend people, they can simply turn their heads. Some day they will be old and hot and want to wear shorts too. They will be so happy that the rest of us pioneered the way! So get out your shorts, put them on and go walk around town enjoying the cool breezes. :-)

loopyloo Wed 25-Jul-18 21:21:09

Thanks everyone. When I get home, I will get my shorts out. Yes I have veins and arthritic knees but at home who cares.

oldbatty Wed 25-Jul-18 21:25:55

If the humongous woman I saw by the seaside can wear a bikini then anyone can wear shorts.

humongous? and possibly talented/interesting/funny.

What a nasty comment.

oldbatty Wed 25-Jul-18 21:29:03

I am size 12 so I am not too worried about my rear view

woop de doo

Jane10 Wed 25-Jul-18 21:33:16

Shorts are not fine for everyone! They are not even the coolest thing to wear in hot temperatures. Go ahead though. Wear them if you must. Your choice. Other people's choice to think the worse of them.

Witzend Wed 25-Jul-18 22:06:45

No shorts here. Loose cotton or linen trousers or a long, swingy linen skirt. I find that being covered up in a loose natural fabric is cooler than the sun beating down on your skin.

lemongrove Wed 25-Jul-18 22:12:44

PamelaJ1 was talking about herself grin oldbatty

lemongrove Wed 25-Jul-18 22:15:03

I agree Jane10 and in fact a floaty dress or skirt is much cooler ( and looks better IMHO)
But of course, everyone should wear what they feel comfortable in.

Flaxseed Wed 25-Jul-18 22:47:56

They sound lovely MOnica!
Where did you get yours from please?

I live in shorts at the moment but only because my legs are quiet nice - which can’t be said for the rest of me grin

I wear blue or white denim shirts but could do with some ‘dressy’ ones.
