Hi all - I had an accident which injured my right shoulder consequently I found it really hard to carry a shoulder bag or even a shopping bag on my right side and as I get older it's getting worse. Have tried using left side but aches seem to spread over to right side - cross body bag still painful. I'm now considering a bum bag!!!! Any thoughts? Will I look like a complete div?

Probably! But as the alternative is a lot of pain the only alternative is a rucksack, which won’t be much better for you. TBH I use one if I’m going for a long walk with the dog as I don’t want to carry a bag, would I use one for every day? Tough one.

I have the same problem caused by problems with my spine and I bought this one

It is remarkably roomy and no one has dared say that I look a div!

I think there comes a time in your life when you have to stop caring what people think, people over 50 are invisible to everyone else anyway.

Gap has a very nice bag that you wear as a belt for about £15. They have two colours...Champagne or Cognac.
It looks fasionable and probably more stylish than the traditional happy hiker bum bag.

We frequently go to Rome on holiday. I wear a Kipling bum bag when I'm there there to keep everything safe, as wearing a rucksack is painful. I don't think I look ridiculous. Many people wear them.
I'm usually quite particular (vain grin ) about what I wear, but what's more important, being comfortable or thinking you looking ridiculous?
No choice!

It's your health which is important jools go for the bum bag. I use one all the time when walking my dogs. It holds poo bags, tissues, treats etc. Life is too short to worry about what other people think.

I've used one for years, since I was robbed. Mine's more of a purse but I can get quite a lot in it, specs, even passport as well as cards and cash. And if you wear a coat or a jacket that will cover it.
I had an accident to my shoulder too.

I am sure I have posted this before, but just in case..
My friend who likes a bit of bling was holidaying in California, she saw this gold bum bag in a shop window and went in to look at it.
She decided she couldn't ask for a bum bag as she didn't know what the reaction would be.
When she pointed to it the assistant shrieked in a loud voice for all to hear "Do you mean the fanny sack?"
My friend was mortified.

ann. grin different country, different meanings.

jools I don't know how big your bag needs to be but I have been having trouble with my shoulders for some time and rucksacks and cross body bags dragged on my shoulders too much. I have recently bought a Kipling cross body/waist (bum) bag which has detachable straps for crossbody and concealed in a zipper at the back, straps for converting to a waist bag. If you think you might look daft in a bum bag, consider me when I wear mine with both the cross body strap AND the waist strap at the same time. I have found this distributes the weight better than either one alone and works well for me. I might look an idiot but at least my back doesn't hurt so much!

I bought a bum bag for my holidays. I find it so useful to have both hands free sometimes and I like small bags. I have 3 by Tula that either go on my belt or I use the strap.
The photo shows my very colourful B.B. and 2 of the others.
The blue and red one is open so you can see the card section. There’s room for a phone too.

My daughter brought her American boyfriend home in the early 90s and he mentioned a fanny pack, there was a stunned silence for a few moments then hasty explanations.

Greyduster Wed 25-Jul-18 18:18:00

I use one when I am out walking (I prefer to call it a waist pouch! hmm). It has a first aid kit in one half and my phone, glasses, money and other essentials in the other. I don’t care what it looks like - it’s invaluable. I use a slightly different version to carry everything I need when I am fishing on the move, leaving hands free.

I was just going to post about the 'fanny bag' when I read annsixtys post. My DD spent a year at college in America and always found it very amusing

Thanks all for your advice!! I've bitten the bullet and bought 3 bum/fanny bags!!! All the comments about health over style made me feel like a stroppy teen again!! Oh mummmmm!!

my daughter uses a bum bag when she goes to music festivals and it looks very stylish - it is black leather with tassels. But, as above, who cares what it looks like as long as it is practical.

I believe bum bags are back in fashion. They’ve been on a lot of style pages so go for it

Coconut Fri 27-Jul-18 09:41:55

Bum bags are perfect and you can get some lovely styles now !!

I use a Kipling bumbag when abroad with all vital stuff in so if anything happens passport, credit cards, currency etc is with me. However there are festival bumbags which are fun . Put that into google and things like this come up:
www.boohoo.com/rainbow-striped-bumbag/DZZ22149.html

Which ever you choose you can make them part of your style.

I also take a Kipling city back pack for when i travel by train bus to put my water bottle, sun hat etc in. I get the lightest on possible.

and a cloth bag for any shopping which can then go in the city bag if necessary. I

I would suggest you see your GP first, even if it is an old injury that is worsening, as they may refer you to a physio which should be your first call in repairing or preventing any further damage. Meantime do not put any bags on your shoulder as this could be causing further damage.

I know a few people who have had shoulder problems including rotator cuff injury and frozen shoulder and some have said they wished they had seen a physio sooner and it would have prevented the ongoing problem or at the very least reduced the pain and they would have managed this better.

grannypauline Fri 27-Jul-18 10:06:34

Made me smile to think some of you guys are worried about what other people think about your clothes and accessories! I am long past this! I wear what I find practical and would actually like to go naked in this weather!

sandelf Fri 27-Jul-18 10:09:55

Have look at this - it is a cross body but you can go either side (the strap can be swapped from side to side) and wear it on front (eg in a really crowded place, for security). It is light and has 'all the pockets'.

After having bursitis in one shoulder which healed after cortisone injections then a very painful frozen shoulder on the other side I discovered cross body handbags. I couldn't bear the pain of the handles of a tote bag on the frozen shoulder or even anyone touching it but the shoulder responded really well to hydrodilation therapy under a CT scan. Since then I have used small to medium cross body bags that free up both hands. Now have quite a collection in different colours. I think at our stage of life you use whatever you like and works for you. As others have noted it's depressing to realise that no one else is going to give it a moments thought. C'est la vie.
