Hi all - I had an accident which injured my right shoulder consequently I found it really hard to carry a shoulder bag or even a shopping bag on my right side and as I get older it's getting worse. Have tried using left side but aches seem to spread over to right side - cross body bag still painful. I'm now considering a bum bag!!!! Any thoughts? Will I look like a complete div?

I cannot carry a bag on my right shoulder so I often use my left.

Hoever, I have changed my handbag for an upmarket leather backpack and it gives me no problems. Brands such as Mulberry, Coach and Radley all make lovely backpacks now which are virtually indistinguishable from nice handbags and, when wearing them, you wouldn't know they were there.

Emily, that Boohoo site has a sequin covered bum bag too, I didn't realise they were cool again !

I don't find it depressing that no one notices what I wear! I am quite happy to be wallpaper. But I do like to have my points of view noticed - and even challenged.

The plus side of being old is no longer trying to compete on the looks front and being able to enjoy a good laugh about it (or anything else).

Surely, you are past the age when it matters what others think. As long as you are comfortable that's just fine.

You are wise to consider other options. My brother-in-law has terrible back problems and his physiotherapist said that even the wallet in his back pocket was putting pressure on one side of his body. I had to abandon over the shoulder bags some years ago as they caused pain in my one shoulder which I tended to favour for carrying. I have now changed to back packs which you can get in varying sizes and are very comfortable. Most of them have a carrying handle as well. You just have to remember not to put valuable items in the outside compartment. Cross body bags are good too.

Kipling do some lightweight fashionable ones.

I keep seeing these advertised on Facebook - miatui.com/collections/backpack - they do lots of styles but the backpack looks smart and has a secure pocket that sits on your back for valuables. The only problem I've found with backpacks is that you do get a sweaty back wearing one!!

Talking of bumbags, my lovely cousin’s DH has a colostomy. On a winter holiday in Spain he wanted to go topless on the beach but did not want to expose his colostomy bag. He bought a bum bag just the right size, cut the back off it, positioned it over and, voila, he was just another top less tourist wearing a bum bag.

I have a dodgy right shoulder and a problem with pain in my back on the right side. So I have invested in a beautiful leather backpack which spreads the weight and gives me no problems. As for shopping backs i have an assistant who I bribe with wonderful meals, my OH. Failing him being around because he is doing some mad thing like running up a mountain, I use a trolley, even for 3 items or ask to have it carried to the car. Bye the way, a lot of young people have complimented me on my backpack so I must be doing something right.

I’ve noticed that bum bags are trendy again so I feel quite smug - I am now a fashionable div!!!

annsixty - we lived in America in the 80s for a while, in Iowa where the local team was the Hawkeyes”. In a shop window I first saw the word “fanny” used meaning “bum” - but it was on a pair of KNICKERS - the following was embroidered brazenly “No1 Hawkeye fanny”.

I can heartily recommend Healthy Back Bags :
www.thehealthybackbag.co.uk/products/women

I have several of them, in different sizes from tiny to day rucksack, and won’t go back to using any other sort of bag now. They are ergonomically designed for the weight to be taken by your spine and not your shoulders or neck.

I carry everything but the kitchen sink and I can carry it all day without any ill effect. Several of my friends have now converted to them and are very happy with them.

And all those pockets mean I’m super organised!

If wearing a bum-bag makes for easy living then certainly go ahead and don't even worry what people think, who are they the bag police ??

grin
My daughter always wore bum bags at festivals and gigs.
There are some lovely ones around.

Each to their own and whatever suits the individual. I've never owned a bum bag, I prefer an across the body bag if I want to be super safe.

Your comfort is more important than what you look like. If you are worried about what you look like you could always wear a longer top that goes over the bumbag, them it would not be seen, although people might wonder what the bump is. I'm sending you a glass of wine, drink enough and you won't care what you look like wink wine
