What possible reason could there be for hairs to grow wild on your chin once you pass the menopause?? ??

It's weird isn't it? I have grown no underarm hair since the menopause and do not have whiskers on my face. All kinds of things that my contemporaries complain about are alien to me. Am I just lucky?

My theory is they're rudimentary 'beard' hairs so they tend to grow back overnight. Men's faces have so many, they must either shave every day or grow a beard. Thankfully, I only have a couple to deal with, but they keep me in a state of constant vigilance, nonetheless.

I'm going to try the tea tree oil. Can I buy it by the gallon? grin

Newnannie Thu 09-Aug-18 22:05:08

These are great!!

Purple poppies, I get this and have it threaded, painful and a bit red for a short while after, but it does the trick!

Day6 Thu 09-Aug-18 20:01:13

I used the facial Veet cream on my upper lip. I am fortunate that I have fair hairs but plucking them out was painful.

After I'd used it, and the 'soothing' after cream the pack came with, my inflamed red skin 'moustache' was visible to all for several days and much more noticeable than the hairs! shock It was so sore too!

Yes, I followed the instructions to the letter. confused

My daughter and I have long had a pact that if I am clapped into intensive care she will appear with tweezers to keep the rogue whiskers under control. I've embarked on electrolysis in the meantime as I don't want the poor girl to be overworked.

Please let us know if tea tree oil works teacheranne.

I asked for advice on getting rid of skin tags but I was not planning on torturing myself! The idea is using nail clipper to cut them off makes me feel ill! And living on my own means there is no one to tie cotton on - also I have so many on my neck and chest that I would look really odd with dozens of dangling strands! I was hoping that there would be some lotions or potions that I could try? Tea tree all seems to be a miracle cure all so I might try that.

As an avid people watcher, I can guarantee that i'll see women on their own in a cafe or on the bus, and their hand automatically sets about exploring their face for hairs whilst they're reading or on gransnet.

I was mortified recently that I'd had guests stay for the weekend without checking my face in the magnifying mirror first. (This is in all the etiquette books you know - use a magnifying mirror before having guests stay..grin )

About three days after they'd gone I did use a magnifying mirror. One very fine long white hair was sprouting from my neck - about two inches long it was! - and I had various curly white hairs on the very sides of my cheeks, near my ears. My eyebrows, though extremely thin were poking around at all sorts of angles. I see myself in the mirror every day but my eyesight (even with specs) isn't what it was. The evil magnifying mirror (which I tend to avoid) is both my friend and my enemy it would seem!

I am sure without their specs our guests didn't notice but - when they did wear their glasses? Oh how embarrassing! I spent a good half hour plucking and tweezing once I'd realised how much growth was on show! I moaned at OH. Surely he'd noticed? He swore he'd not noticed. However, he left the kitchen saying "I'll give the mower a quick run over your face if you like?"

pollyperkins Thu 09-Aug-18 17:34:49

I try to keep up with the chin bristles too but seem to miss them when tweezing. DH told me the other day that there was a really long one on my chin just as we were arriving at a restaurant to meet friends. I said 'Don't tell me now !' He said 'But you told me to tell you!' 'Yes, but when I can do something about it!'. Men!!

M0nica Thu 09-Aug-18 17:32:11

Be glad they only came with the menopause. I started tweezering coarse dark facial hair in my early 20s and have been having electrolysis regularly since I was 40.

Perhaps the early arrival of coarse black facial hairs is why I have always been a bolshie member of the awkward squad! I didn't need to wait for the menopause to get like that!

marionk Thu 09-Aug-18 17:31:47

Spots on the bum!! For goodness sake - messes with my sexy thong look ????

Day6 Thu 09-Aug-18 17:27:50

This, apparently, is why many women become more assertive after the menopause!

Oooh, DoraMarr that's interesting.

Next time I become bossy or snappy with OH I shall say male hormones are to blame (His - but I won't tell him that!)

I did notice that I'd become less willing to appease and turn the other cheek after the menopause. I thought it was just an age thing and I was being my true self at long last, in being more assertive. grin

Elrel Thu 09-Aug-18 17:16:56

A neighbour got a relative to tie cotton around some of her numerous quite large skintags. She found it extremely painful

Petersgirl2 Thu 09-Aug-18 17:13:23

Let’s be grateful ladies, my friend is totally 100 per cent bald, male pattern baldness evidently. The plus side is that she looks years younger than the rest of us in her really lovely wig and to her embarrassment is often asked where she gets her hair done. Still hard thing to bear though.

MissAdventure Thu 09-Aug-18 16:45:02

I cut skin tags off with my nail clippers.
I have a plaster at the ready because they bleed a lot, one well placed snip and they're gone.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 09-Aug-18 16:41:54

Purlepoppies I have the down too, otherwise called peach fuzz. The answer for me was to buy an epilator which does a multiple plucking operation and my skin stays smooth for months. It also deals with those stray wiskers and has attachments for eyebrows and also a small shaver. It does make your eyes water a bit the first time you use it but the results are so well worth it. Quick, easy and foolproof. Get a mains operated rather than rechargeable for reliable operation,

MissAdventure Thu 09-Aug-18 16:17:37

Well, its certainly worked in my case, Hilly.

HillyN Thu 09-Aug-18 16:08:30

I think all these post-menopausal facial hairs, spots etc are nature's way of making us unattractive to the opposite sex once we are no longer fertile. sad

JoyBloggs Thu 09-Aug-18 14:26:04

Poppy I think the hairs on the chin are the ones that once upon a time lived a cosy, sheltered life in their owners' armpits. One day they all decided to up sticks, move in together on the chin and live out their final days in the great outdoors. It would seem they enjoy the fresh air and sunshine...

sharon103 Thu 09-Aug-18 13:19:27

I've had a good chuckle reading these posts. I love the sense of humour. Thanks ladies!

grandtanteJE65 Thu 09-Aug-18 13:02:04

It comes as news to me that eyebrows don't grow, mine have become more bristly and the individual hairs are longer now than before the menopause. Moustache and to lesser extent beard are flourishing! No noticeable difference to my hairy legs - and how I wish the hairs would go away there, but "bush" is thinner and underarm hairs are a thing of the past. Odd isn't it.

Hair on head is getting thinner. Wouldn't it be nice if we could re-direct hair to where we actually want it?

sluttygran Thu 09-Aug-18 12:57:30

Most of my body hair has disappeared, and my scalp
is noticeably thinning. However, I have the most magnificent and extravagant eyebrows.
I try to keep them under control, but am now wondering if I might let them proliferate and use them for a ‘comb-over’ grin
