What possible reason could there be for hairs to grow wild on your chin once you pass the menopause?? ??

grannyqueenie Wed 08-Aug-18 11:32:44

Rubbish isn’t it! Trying to think positively here, maybe it’s so you’ll know quickly if your close vision is deteriorating i.e. not able to see to tweeze so easily? Nah that’s not working....it’s still rubbish! So is the deteriorating close vision come to to think of it!

The endocrinological reason is that the balance of androgens and oestrogens shifts, so that women’s male hormones increase in relation to female hormones. This, apparently, is why many women become more assertive after the menopause!
But really it’s just a bl***y nuisance!

In my mother's older years, she always kept a magnifying mirror on a stand ,on the kitchen table. When I asked why it was there, she said it was in a good sunny spot , and that she could check for facial hairs every day and tweeze them.

When she died I took the mirror, and it now sits on my balcony table where I have my morning coffee. In a nod to Mum, I also check for the hairs every morning in that sun which shows them up so well.

I'm always amazed at how there can be nothing on one day, and next day I'll find one which is half an inch long ! How does that happen ? It's one of the great mysteries of getting older.

I think it's so that you can tell the husband or lover that you are "just going to pluck my beard"when you know they are "in the mood for loving" and you just want to go to sleep , in the hope it puts them off.

Stella1949-?
Nanabilly-? Lol!

My daughter was in hospital at age 13 for major surgery, and because they weren't sure where to put her (Children's or Adult Ward) she ended up in the Adult Ward.

Once she was mobile, with her youthful 20/20 vision - she was the one, after one of the other patients first had the bright idea, who went round the ward tweezing all the older women's bristles before visiting hours when sprucing up was the order of the day.

Ah, I assumed we grew them to amuse our grandchildren by giving them something to plait!

MissAdventure Wed 08-Aug-18 18:57:32

Its ironic; more facial hairs but far worse eyesight, so you can feel the swines but not see them!

HildaW Wed 08-Aug-18 19:28:58

Not so much hairy thankfully but still get the odd very teenager type spot.........due to ever failing eye-sight have had to upgrade my X3 make-up mirror to a x10 to ensure I do not leave the house with a visible spot .... its just a bit too strong really but better that than walking around with a pimple on the chin all day!

MissAdventure Wed 08-Aug-18 20:02:14

I have spots and hairs.
Its like a game of 'top trumps'.
Any advance on spots and hairs?

MillieBear Wed 08-Aug-18 21:51:16

Skin tags! They drive me mad. I get a crop of them every now and again. Always highly visible, always warty and ugly and always difficult to remove. I am morphing into a witch, I just know it.

Bathsheba Wed 08-Aug-18 22:02:01

What annoys me is that my eyebrows are disappearing, but hairs are sprouting on my chin and upper lip, grrr. That's just not playing the game in my book angry.

On the plus side, though, I can't remember the last time I needed to remove any underarm or leg hair. Several years. And being dark skinned, my hairy legs and armpits needed very regular attention when I was younger.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Aug-18 22:10:24

I have skin tags too.
What a catch I am!
The full Monty!

Bathsheba Thu 09-Aug-18 08:08:11

Erm.....didn’t mean ‘dark skinned’, I meant ‘dark haired’!

Mother Nature is very cruel !

In a well lit lift recently my husband caught sight of my few bristly face hairs and was exceedingly amused by them. I usually tweezer them regularly but must have neglected to do so. He called me Billy Goat Gruff for sometime after that! Luckily he wasn't worried by them and I didn't mind the nickname. But why do eyebrows not grow (nor hair in a more delicate area) but these bristles grow on a top lip or chin? Very odd and something you don't know will happen when you are younger.

David1968 Thu 09-Aug-18 10:03:49

Oh poppyred, I so understand what you say. My hair (on head) is greying and thinning whilst the facial hair proliferates and stays dark. A friend is convinced that your hair just "redistributes itself" as you get older, going from your head to other places....

MillieBear Thu 09-Aug-18 10:06:33

And what's with the mouth? When I purse my lips my mouth looks like a cat's bottom. hmm When did that happen?

Nannykay Thu 09-Aug-18 10:11:18

It’s like the rest of my body only this is the hair on my head going south

Purplepoppies Thu 09-Aug-18 10:18:18

I've been lucky in life, I haven't ever had very many under arm hairs (6 or 7 if that) and my legs aren't too bad either. I haven't got bristly chin hairs but have developed facial down ?. It's blonde! I'm dark haired (naturally, but dye my head hair) and is very long! Drives me insane! It's around my jaw, under my ear area. I tried buffing it off but I made my skin sore ?

Elrel Thu 09-Aug-18 10:29:46

My eyebrows never needed much attention having a perfectly all right shape naturally. No longer, however, they sprout long thick white hairs apparently overnight. If I try to tweezer out the most obvious I invariably manage to miss and leave a gap in the dark hairs. Oh well, I did have at least 60 years of not having to bother plucking!
Yesterday I had a hearing test which showed very little deterioration and no need for an aid. So they really do mumble in tv dramas! I shall still put phones on speaker however.

Juliet27 Thu 09-Aug-18 10:35:39

At least we don’t have hairs growing in our ears...or do we?!!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-Aug-18 10:46:56

My Eyebrows have a life of their own!!!! When the young girl waxes and trims them I always ask her to check my chin and upper lip and have made her promise to wax when necessary (even if I want to chicken out!!)

On the plus side I only get my legs waxed 3 or 4 times a year now. Underarm hair totally disappeared?

RustyBear Thu 09-Aug-18 10:48:58

@Stella1949 - I hope you always make sure the magnifying mirror isn’t pointing at something combustible! grin
