I have been wearing hush sort of light weight, trousers and more or less any tops and some nice sandals for months. Also, a couple of maxi skirts. I think this has been reasonably successful. Now the season is changing..... what to wear? Picture a vertically challenged, size 14 ish person who feels the cold. Thanks folks. smile

When you say budget is limited is difficult to advise (if you know what I mean) but if we are talking very limited you can't beat Primark, or, my favourite, TKMaxx. You will get some really different stuff there. But it takes time grin

You can never go wrong with skinny jeans and a Breton top, classic.

teabagwoman Fri 14-Sept-18 17:26:54

Petra, thanks, I will give Primark a try. Haven’t so far as I’ve been very much a classic dresser. I can afford to buy a couple of good pieces for best but wouldn’t want to pay £60 for a jumper that I’ll wear while out with my dgd for example.

Skinny jeans and Breton jumper would make me look like the Michelin man on stilts! I'd go badly wrong. Back to my fluffy leopardskin onesie... (Best if I stay in the house or so the family says!)

Please forgive yesterday’s self pitying rant. As you will have gathered I was having a bad day. Have never liked buying clothes and the thought of having to start again sent me into a panic. Have tended to settle for clothes that will “do” but am clearly going to have to change my ways if I want to avoid shocks when I unexpectedly see myself in a mirror. Now can any one point me in the direction of mid priced tops and jumpers that skim rather than cling to the midrif? Thanks.

Going up a size with a cheaper purchase can make sense. My mum always used to reckon that the likes of Jaeger or Windsmoor were cut more generously and she could afford to go down a size!

oldbatty Sat 15-Sept-18 10:39:55

teabag, try a personal shopper at one of the big stores. They don't charge, they don't make you buy things and they will help you out with shapes and styles.

Not many women are just one size all over.

Jalima1108 Sat 15-Sept-18 10:40:26

My White Stuff dress (just arrived) is certainly generous - it would suit a giraffe! About 6" too long, would be just OK if I was 5'10" or 11".

Jane10 perhaps I need to check myself in a full-length mirror shock

also teabag , after what you've been through you deserve some clothing that fits and makes you feel good. Think of the nauseating L'Oreal woman....because you're worth it!!!

I was rather pleased with my outfit today as I usually wear tops and trousers but I saw someone at WI who looked young in her outfit and thought I was due for a change and update.

So I bought my first pair of leggings and then a tunic dress which is light grey and black the pattern looks like links in a chain. It felt fab and DH gave his thumbs up approval ??
I think I have found my new image, the previous one is 71 years old !

Went to the Ladies on the ferry home from France yesterday, six women in the queue. I was the only one not wearing Breton stripes. then someone came out of a cubicle and she was wearing........

I was wearing a loose floral top.

If you are short of money, find a nice town and trawl the charity shops.

I went to a wedding this summer wearing a 1960's Jaguar dress, 1980s M&Co jacket and with a very attractive handbag, all found in my local charity shops. My lovely Jacques Vert coat was bought for a quarter of its new price on ebay and I have several skirts and another coat, all from charity shops.

I do not feel embarrassed by this and will happily admit to people who ask where I sourced these items.

Hallelujah! At last I've found my style. Unfortunately Joanna Lumley wears it for me as I can't quite fit it (or most likely afford it!). Oh well. At least I found it. Shame I can't actually wear it.

MawBroon Sat 15-Sept-18 21:13:23

Real Jaguar or faux fur M0nica?

Luckygirl Sat 15-Sept-18 21:54:42

I sorted my style years ago - scruffy and comfortable - and if folk don't like it they can look the other way!

Mamie Sun 16-Sept-18 07:25:38

Well I am rocking the one-legged look having fallen downstairs and broken my ankle while packing the car to go on holiday. I am in plaster from toes to thigh - what can I wear?
It is still really hot here so at the moment I am wearing OH's big t-shirts with a summer skirt when I go to the fracture clinic (only outing possible).
I still have four weeks to go so does anyone have any ideas for colder weather?
Probably not relevant but I am normally a size 12 now more like a 10.

NanKate Sun 16-Sept-18 07:36:07

I’m sorry Mamie to hear of your nasty break I do hope the next few weeks pass quickly for you so you can get out of your plaster.

Mamie Sun 16-Sept-18 07:48:08

Thanks NanKate. Sadly not passing very quickly so far. ?

ffinnochio Sun 16-Sept-18 07:57:47

Gosh, Mamie, so sorry to hear about your ankle. Must be even more miserable with the heat you’ve been having.
Hopefully you’ll have a mild start to Autumn. Can’t think of alternative wear, apart from wide legged pantaloons!

Mamie Sun 16-Sept-18 08:06:24

Thanks Ffinn. On one colder day I cut one leg off some leggings!

teabagwoman Sun 16-Sept-18 08:07:40

That’s a rotten thing to have happen Mamie. The only thing I can think of is perhaps cheap jogging bottoms and split one leg and maybe attach some tapes so you can tie it together over the plaster. Not exactly elegant but any port in a storm

Thank you OldBatty for your advice and support, I’ll try and pluck up courage and book myself a personal shopper. And I’ll try going up a size MawBroon and see if that helps to disguise the portly bits. Good point about charity shops M0nica, I’ll ask my dd to look as she lives in a more affluent area.

Mamie Sun 16-Sept-18 08:56:16

Anyway, when not lounging around in a big t-shirt with one leg on a pillow, I mostly wear jeggings and tops from Joules, Seasalt and White Stuff. In summer I wear knee length linen skirts and t shirts or tops from the above. My DD passes on a lot of stylish stuff that is no longer smart enough for work.
I do have tunics and leggings from before I lost weight and they will probably get an airing this year.

oldbatty Sun 16-Sept-18 09:19:04

teabag, just book it. Give yourself a couple of hours.....why not?

clementine Sun 23-Sept-18 10:41:39

Saw this and posted it as a separate topic but probably should have put it here in the light of the discussions , it seems quite relevant .
