Does anyone know the difference between facial Day creams and Night creams ,, do we need both ? Does the night cream only work at night with a special ingredient that won't work during the day ?, just wondering ,

Totally agree with Anja. Stick to basic moisturiser. I used to use really expensive creams and serums but haven’t do so for years. Use Aldi moisturiser now. I once watched a documentary where a leading dermatologist did an exercise over 6 months with various women using some cheap creams through to really high end Creme de la Mer products. The women didn’t know which products they were using as they had been decanted into plain containers. Their skin was tested under special machines at the end and there was zero difference. Our skin needs moisturiser to protect from drying and the elements and spf to protect from the sun. I realised after watching that programme how i’d been wasting my money.

I use L'Oréal skin serum. Has anyone else discovered this. It's lovely and light with a gorgeous smell. Not expensive either. I don't have dry skin so a serum is perfect for me.

Lucky me to have inherited my mother's skin. Cheap moisturiser day and night for me. People are always amazed at my age they say I look about 60 and I'm 77. Thank you mother.

Four year old GD asked me what I was doing when she saw me applying moisturiser to my face. When I explained, half in jest, that it was to make me look younger, she earnestly replied, " It hasn't worked granny ". They are so honest!

I’ve suffered with acne all my life even though I’m now nearly seventy! My Dad had it so maybe hereditary not sure. Tried every thing dermatologists etc. Then went to a fete last year where a stall had organic argon oil products. Tried the one with frankincence and rose and have noticed a dramatic change! Skin never going to be unmarked but much much better. So regime is now remove make up with micellar water then apply oil sparingly to face and neck It moisturises and is comfortable.

Grannybuy,I liked your story.
My grandson once said to me when he was little.
"You haven't got any wrinkles granny but you are a bit crinkly!"

Luckily I have quite good skin but I have always used a skincare routine. I used No. 7 for years having tried expensive makes which smelt divine but did not do any more than mid range No. 7.
Then after having a demo at WI I started using Tropic products. They have no animal products in them & are not tested on animals which matters to me so I switched. It is also made in a small factory here in Surrey. My skin has never looked so good. It is a bit dearer than my usual but you need a very small amount so I think it evens out. It has made a real difference & I am delighted so I would say that finding a brand that suits you can make a big difference.
I get it online.
Worth a look! The girl who runs it was a winner on The Aprentice.

Day and night cream has a big difference. The principle of action on the skin. I use both creams!

Day creams need an SPF in them, night creams do not - they're more about hydrating. But as long as they don't have anything in them that will irritate your skin, smell nice and do the job, I don't think it matters how much they are. I am line-free at 60 and have always used a Boots range. My Mum was almost line free when she died (aged 79) and she used Oil of Olay all her life. As long as you keep your skin clean, hydrated and don't toast it in the sun, that's all you can do (I think).

dysongirl Thu 10-Jan-19 13:33:50

I have been using Olay day cream for years sf15 I think or could be sf30!!
Then night cream which I only use sometimes would be Olay.
I am always being told I don't look my age 47

Have just discovered goat milk and donkey milk face creams. Lovely. If asses' milk was good enough for Cleopatra, then it's good enough for me!

The best skin I ever had was when I was breastfeeding and had to drink 8 large glasses of water a day. My face just bloomed, plumped up and so clear. My mum who is 92 has never used make up at all, she used Ponds cold cream every night and still has lovely skin. I would never pay those ridiculous prices for face cream, it’s all hype in my opinion.

dysongirl Thu 10-Jan-19 13:37:28

Oh and I use Boots protect and perfect serum under my day moisturiser every day too

When he was little my DS said to my mother “Grandma, your skin is too big for you!” She spent her child hood in the Australian outback. I’ve always protected my skin so I’m hoping my DGD won’t say the same to me!

My late Mother in Law used Nivea on her face every morning & night of her life, she had the most beautiful soft, line free skin I've ever seen. I've done the same, and yes, it keeps my skin soft & moisturized -and recently I have used the large Morrisons baby lotion (pink-think its called Nutmeg) cost 1 pound for huge bottle! It is lovely , use it on my legs, elbows, and I have psoriasis , but this softens my skin
Highly recommended!

I have tried lots of moisturisers all makes and prices and the best one I have found is..........LIDL cien gold day cream price £3.49 Ab Fab

PennyWhistle Thu 10-Jan-19 15:26:12

I have always used Johnson's baby lotion. Love the smell and it keeps my skin soft. My daughter did tell me when I reached 40 that I should start to use a grown up moisturiser, but I am happy to stick with what works for me. Thanks for sharing ladies ?

I use a mid priced day and matching night cream but I buy in super drug or savers where it is cheaper. Coconut oil is good if you are younger with few lines. Just the solid stuff you buy for cooking. I do notice that the cream I use tightens up that saggy bit under my chin...

winterwhite Thu 10-Jan-19 17:03:28

I notice a difference in feel-good factor.
I enjoy the common sense thrifty high ground when I buy basic / cheapest, but it says nothing to me when I put the stuff on. Whereas when I shop upmarket (usu Lancome or Clinique) I feel an ouch in my conscience as well as my purse, but putting it on somehow boosts my conception of myself.
First I've heard of complexion / wrinkles being influenced by heredity. So many of our own mothers and grandmothers would have been part of the lifelong-smoking generation that you'd think that would skew the conclusions.

Grannyanna12345 Thu 10-Jan-19 17:11:21

Like many of you I also use cheap moisturiser, but my skin improved so much when I was finally persuaded by my fitness-instructor daughter to drink plenty of water. Still don’t really enjoy it but it I’ve cultivated the habit.

I'm sure there is a difference between Night and Day Cream, I'm not sure what it is exactly, but night cream always seems heavier. I use Elemis. You can get cheaper, but I only buy it on offer, it lasts a lot longer than cheaper brands and it seems to suit my skin. I do follow a fairly simple routine of cleanse and moisturise. My best friend watches all the QVC ads which tell you to double (or even triple!) cleanse, use different types of serums, day creams and masks for this that and the other.... that all seems a bit of a con to me to make you buy more products.

1974cookie Thu 10-Jan-19 17:45:10

Aldi do some great face creams etc and at a fraction of the price of the Famous brands. I am sure that if you compare the ingredients in both brands, you would find that they are very similar or indeed the same.

travelsafar Thu 10-Jan-19 18:16:17

Aveeno for me, use it night and morning my skin feeels moist and fresh, plus of course a good diet and eating walnuts helps too

Phoebes Thu 10-Jan-19 19:04:34

I was in hospital a couple of years ago and the sister in charge kept saying that she couldn’t believe I was the age I was and what was my secret! I said “moisturise every day and a good husband”. This still applies! I don’t buy expensive moisturisers - I always used to use Boots Time Delay until,in their wisdom, they discontinued it and replaced it with Lyft, which I really don’t like. Boots have also upgraded their No7 creams, they are much more expensive, so I don’t buy them any more. I find the Aldi products vary a lot, depending on which one you use - some of them are very heavy, and some of them are lovely. The trouble is, I can never remember which is which. Now I just buy whatever is on offer anywhere and it seems to work OK as I haven’t suddenly turned into a wrinkled old crone!

Grandmama Thu 10-Jan-19 19:11:27

Having read a good review in my local paper I bought a pot of day cream and a pot of night cream, both 50ml for £1 each from Poundland. Also a tube of serum for £1. The creams are just as good as my usual Olay.
