Hair ruined

Today I went to a hairdresser, bit more expensive that I usually pay. I wanted just the ends taken of by an inch, the rest left. She did she was just going to lightly cut in to the other hair as it was so thick, I once again said, no its fine as it is, definitely didn't want layers, she said there will be no layers it won't be noticeable just get a sleeker style. Anyway the finished style is choppy and definitely layered she took a good 2 inches off, why do that? I hate this hairstyle it will take 12 months to get it back as it was. I am do upset and said she had fine the opposite of what I wanted. They offered me free cut and blow dry to make up for it. I do not want to go back there. Feel do furious with salon. What do I do in the meantime, it's so short now at the back and it looks and feels horrible.

I have no words of comfort for you I’m sorry. It will just have to grow out- given time& hopefully you will get used to the new style. My daughter was awfully upset a couple of years ago with a stylist but foolishly paid £75 for her hair to be ruined instead of informing this newish salon that she had not asked for it to be dyed& would only be paying for the cut. There was a language barrier because the salon only had one or two English speaking stylists- however my daughter showed a picture of the exact colour, cut and style she required to the girl who did not speak English. She had to then go back to a different hairdresser to pay another £75 for it to be put right after it was ruined. Very expensive hair experience. What made the whole incident worse was that the first stylist took pictures of her creation on an iPad to put in her portfolio without asking my daughter first. She was almost in tears leaving that salon. Luckily the stylist had not chopped into her hair too much, just dyed it chocolate brown at the crown and lilac at the ends. It was an ombré effect but my daughter absolutely hated it. She vowed she would never set foot in that new salon again& sticks to the original salon she had been visiting for years.

As the saying goes, a woman's crowning glory is her hair. I feel for you. I've been there a couple of times too. Alas, we can't stick it back on. I don't know if it's expensive but having extensions put in your hair might help? I know it's devastating but it will grow. If it were me, I'd leave a negative feedback on their website. I'd also advise that if anyone's looking for a new hairdresser to read feedback on the website first or get friends recommendations.

Having a bad treatment at the hairdresser's really pulls you down, you have my sympathy, and so annoying when they won't listen. They always think they know best!

I have had the same hairdresser for 28 years now, she has become like an old friend. But she gets bored with my current style and likes to change it Last time she used a noticeably darker dye, I commented as soon as I saw my wet hair in the mirror, but she was unabashed. Everyone at home and work either told me they hated it or I got the silent stare treatment, so I know it is not a good look, and I hate it each time I catch sight of myself in the mirror. I will have to live with it for six weeks until I can afford another visit, when I will ask her to put it back to the old colour.

In the grand scheme of things it is nothing but a minor, temporary annoyance, but I will be so glad to get rid of it!

The colour that is, not the hair! grin

Cosmos, As a day has passed since you posted, are you getting used to the new style? Has anyone commented either favourable or unfavourably ? Are you still as upset? just wondering.....

I dont think hairdresser understand the term "DON'T TOUCH! MY FRINGE"!! grrrrrrrr

I don't know how they do it when they do it! but they touch it ! tut!

My last bad experience at a hairdressers was 3 years ago, when I asked for a perm (because I have arthritic hands and I thought it would be easier to manage). I asked the stylist for soft curls and warned her that my hair takes a curl really quickly. I left the salon looking like Barbara Streisand in A Star is Born (google image it!!!). It took ages to get it all out!

But it's only hair and it grows back. I would take the salon up on their offer of a cut and blow - they have at least offered to try and fix things for you. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill!

All this fuss for 2 inches???
Sounds like your existing hairstyle didn’t suit you and the hairdresser was trying to make it look better.

sharon103 Wed 10-Apr-19 16:30:02

lol bikergran I have a fringe 'thing' too. They know me well enough NOT to cut much off it! grin

anitamp1 Wed 10-Apr-19 16:30:42

Hopefully will grow back quicker than you think. Give it a couple of weeks to settle down and wash and dry it yourself a few times. It may settle. If not you may need to pop to another salon to get it tidied up. Afraid most of us ladies have had a bad haircut at one time or another.

In the 80’s I went to a salon for my one and only ever perm. Hairdresser left perming solution on for 45 minutes while she cut and blow dried another customer’s hair. The next day my hair snapped off all over. I got my money back.

annodomini Wed 10-Apr-19 16:49:29

Also in the 80s, my usually very competent hairdresser suggested a 'soft' perm. I came out looking like Kevin Keegan. Never again!

Littleannie Wed 10-Apr-19 16:58:53

What a fuss! Nobody has died, the house hasn't burned down. It will grow again in a few weeks.

Alexa Wed 10-Apr-19 17:13:01

Cosmosw, hair grows at about 1/2 inch a month which will make a significant appearance change from the present length.

If your hair was very long 1/2 inch would not make much difference but 1/2 added does change short hair quire a lot in texture and appearance.

Alexa Wed 10-Apr-19 17:13:53

Accidental slip of my fingertip, Cosmos.

Irenelily Wed 10-Apr-19 17:14:18

Being the mother of 3 daughters I go t used to disasters in hairdressers. First comment was “It will grow!” Then I advised wash it yourself and see if you can change the style a bit! Don’t know if it will work for you but hope you learn to live with it!

dragonfly46 Wed 10-Apr-19 17:18:43

Both my DC would rather go to the dentist than the hairdressers!

Alexa Wed 10-Apr-19 17:29:35

My son cuts my hair at the back with an electric trimmer thing and I keep checking until he has cut enough off. I like to do the front and sides myself. I prefer apprentice girls at the hairdresser as they don't seem to mind my micro -managing the cutting.

Wishes Wed 10-Apr-19 17:32:24

I had a similar experience but I loved my new cut (luckily).
I asked for 2 to 3 inches off, the hairdresser actually asked me to show her what my 2 to 3 inches looked like. Dutifully showed her with thumb and pointy finger.
Now her brain translated that to 6 or 7 inches. Ended up above my shoulder.
Another positive - my hair dye goes further grin

Theoddbird Wed 10-Apr-19 18:23:48

Have you asked anyone else what they think of the cut. It might just be you who sees it as awful. Also after a haircut it takes a week and a wash for it it settle down. Give it time. Buy some product...maybe a light wax and use a little bit on your fingertips...you won't need much. You might find that it is 'perfect after a couple of weeks. smile

NanaSuzy Wed 10-Apr-19 19:30:19

I actually hate going to the hairdressers, frankly I'd rather go to the dentist. Every single time I go I vow to just grow it and wear it in a bun, and never set foot in a 'salon' again. If they do it right the first time, they are incapable of reproducing what they did, and it's downhill from there.

DoraMarr Wed 10-Apr-19 21:16:46

Did you see the penultimate “Fleabag?” ‘I look like a pencil.’ Have you asked anyone else if they like your cut? I think the best thing is just to keep it clean, blow dry it, wear your nicest clothes and makeup, smile, and get on with it. It will grow. I’ve had my hair cut today in Spain. The hairdresser said she wanted to accentuate my best features. She has basically given me a crew cut, but I’m channelling Annie Lennox, holding my head up, and acting as though I intended to have this cut all along. When I was a teenager a bad haircut would keep me indoors for weeks, but now I have more confidence, and I’ve discovered that confidence can get you far.

jeanie99 Wed 10-Apr-19 21:52:46

Would it be possible to have hair extensions?
If it is you could charge the hairdresser who damaged your hair with negligence.
Take advice from a solicitor.
Phone around local solicitors and find one who will offer 30 minutes free advice.
I used a solicitor last year and got free advice.
Good luck.

Littleannie Wed 10-Apr-19 22:37:24

Consult a solicitor about a bad hair cut? Words fail me.
