Hair ruined

Well I have a wonderful hairdresser. I have known him since I was 18 and the first time he cut and styled my hair, there was no mirror in front of me so I couldn't see what he was doing. He kept saying "trust me!" When I eventually saw what he'd done I thought it was fantastic. I've stayed with him ever since. It is rare for me to have the same hairstyle for very long - I sit in the chair and tell him to do what he wants, he knows my hair and what it will do. I have had some surprising styles, some that I would never have gone for in a million years, one or two that I didn't especially care for, but quite a lot of lovely ones. He is worth his weight in gold

Cosmos: you said that "Not one person has commented on my hair" well doesn't that also mean that not one person thinks it looks bad?

I struggled for quite a few years to find a hairdresser that actually listened to me. I didn't own a curling iron or straightener, I like my waves and don't use much product.
Basically wash and wear unless special occasion.
I would exit from salons primped and puffed and curled and sprayed beyond recognition - especially in the eighties!

My lovely friend moved to town about 10 years ago and is a hairdresser. Right away she knew what I wanted, and always makes me look my best. Sometimes she will suggest a bit of a style update, and I will let her get on with it. When I get a compliment I will pass it along to her, since she is my hair guru!

I hope you find a stylist that 'gets you'. In the meantime, you may have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your princess!

Littleannie, I feel sorry for all your family traumas. I do not think a bad haircut comes near. However, I too have and do have health issues within my family and a lot in the mast few years and bereavements, as many of the posters on here no doubt do. I was talking about a bad haircut, not that I was going to go to a solicitor or it was life threatening or remotely on a scale of other things going on in my life, just a haircut. A disappointed but not totally devasted lady.
Thanks to all you lovely ladies who have had similar experiences, that teenager with beautiful long hair, coming out with a blue crew cut, it must have been traumatic to her at the time. What on earth was the hairdresser thinking, not about her client for sure.

Eloethan I stand by what I said. Are some women so vain they think everyone is constantly admiring their hair? Most people are so wrapped up in their own thoughts and worries they wouldn't notice if you walked past bald. If a too short hair cut is the worst thing that happens to you, you are very lucky.
My dear daughter in law, mother of 2 small children, has terminal lung and brain cancer. My friend has severe Alzheimers. Doubly incontinent, can't talk, can't feed herself, doesn't even recognise her husband. I think that puts a bad haircut into perspective doesn't it?
And yes, I do take care about how I look. What other people think? I don't give a damn.

I too spend ages finding an image on line of the look I'm trying to achieve, print it off and take it with me. I can honestly say my hairdresser always tries to do what I want but obviously we have to make allowances for hair type etc. A Hairdresser that listens to what you want is worth their weight in gold. In the OP's circumstances I would have voiced my opinion and refused to pay.

I recently needed to change hairdresser. I looked at friends etc. and when I saw a good cut and colour, I asked for the stylist's detail. Voila. She is brilliant and I can sit back and let her get on with it. Look at other women's hair and ask.

I always take photos to the salon with me showing exactly the cut I want. That way, they can't say they misunderstood my verbal instructions and I can't remember the last time I had a bad result.

Find them online and post how you feel!

Go get a free haircut and ask the Manager to do it.

Totally understand Cosmos . I was left traumatised over 50 years ago , aged 18 when a hairdresser "trimmed" my fringe,She left me with an inch long pelmet that I could do nothing with and I wore a variety of wigs,luckily very fashionable in the 60s, until it grew. To this day I have never, ever let a hairdresser near my fringe,I have the correct scissors and do it myself. I have found over the years that most hairdressers are "scissor happy" and just do as they please.

Oh I feel for you Cosmos - 28th November 2018 - I remember it well. My hair was past shoulder length and my hairdresser suggested a graduated cut. Okay I said, but not too short !!! Out I came with razor cut to the neck, long at the sides and a mushroom sitting on the top of my head (well that’s how I saw it) Lovely I said, tipped her and ran out the door. I went through all the cliches, as other posts have said, but it did upset me and I felt like I had to explain to people that knew me, yes I know it’s too short and looks daft, but hey ho it will grow. But it has, and now back to one length, albeit still just past my ears, so my heartfelt sympathy is sent to you

Hi I sympathise ! For years I had keratin treatment on my hair for frizz etc and had lovely glossy hair .January 2018 had it done before holiday and disaster ! Complete frizzy mess fringe looked like a Brillo pad ! Continual haircuts and deep conditioning layered haircut later salon visit Evey 4 weeks I
still have about 3 inches left on the bottom ! And people have been very rude and unkind re my hair disaster too so good luck with it ! XX

Is it a bad cut or is it just you don’t like it? If it’s a bad cut - definitely get your money back and see if you can get it rectified. If you don’t like it - maybe it doesn’t look that bad - what do others think? Could you change the look a bit? Put a photo on here and I bet it looks fine- something new takes a while to get used to and sometimes it’s good to have a change - and it will grow!

My parents used to say "It's only 2 weeks between a bad haircut and a good haircut".' That being said my poor niece had long chestnut coloured hair and was asked by a local hair salon to be a model for hair styling and photos taken. After the appointment, when my brother in law arrived home from work she was huddled in a bean bag crying her eyes out, with a knitted beanie hat pulled down over her ears and forehead. My BIL went to the salon and roared heck out of them. My niece's hair was now a blue crewcut. It took a bit longer than 2 weeks to look better I might add. No help for you other than to say I would definitely make sure the hairdresser knew what she had done wrong and why you were dissatisfied. In a few weeks, after a bit of growth, you may be able to have it rectified.

I think I'm safe in guaranteeing that although it isn't what you expected, it isn't THAT bad. And it'll grow.

Littleannie It matters to Cosmos and it matters to a lot of other people too. It may seem trivial to you and it probably is, in the grand scheme of things, but people can't help what they feel. A terrible haircut makes me feel terrible and I understand how Cosmos feels. Perhaps you are fortunate enough to have so much confidence that you don't care how you look or what anybody thinks about you. Not everyone is like you.

I know there's worse things that can happen, than a disasterous hair cut, but if your hair is a mess it affects the way you feel about yourself. I won't go back there and yes I did foolishly pay. Don't say anything! I just don't ever visit test salon again. Not one person has commented on my hair, it is a complete change from how I normally look, that says it all. I have brushed it back behind my ears and the stubble of a fringe she left me with I have kind of twisted it and secured it with a grip do it looks as if I haven't got one, it will be released when it has grown.
Thank you all for your kind comments, they have helped, now the shock has subsided I will just get on with it, but will never take my hair for granted, it has never been a bother, I have wondered about dying it, or growing it too long in the past, now I just want it back.?

Consult a solicitor about a bad hair cut? Words fail me.

Would it be possible to have hair extensions?
If it is you could charge the hairdresser who damaged your hair with negligence.
Take advice from a solicitor.
Phone around local solicitors and find one who will offer 30 minutes free advice.
I used a solicitor last year and got free advice.

Did you see the penultimate “Fleabag?” ‘I look like a pencil.’ Have you asked anyone else if they like your cut? I think the best thing is just to keep it clean, blow dry it, wear your nicest clothes and makeup, smile, and get on with it. It will grow. I’ve had my hair cut today in Spain. The hairdresser said she wanted to accentuate my best features. She has basically given me a crew cut, but I’m channelling Annie Lennox, holding my head up, and acting as though I intended to have this cut all along. When I was a teenager a bad haircut would keep me indoors for weeks, but now I have more confidence, and I’ve discovered that confidence can get you far.

I actually hate going to the hairdressers, frankly I'd rather go to the dentist. Every single time I go I vow to just grow it and wear it in a bun, and never set foot in a 'salon' again. If they do it right the first time, they are incapable of reproducing what they did, and it's downhill from there.

Have you asked anyone else what they think of the cut. It might just be you who sees it as awful. Also after a haircut it takes a week and a wash for it it settle down. Give it time. Buy some product...maybe a light wax and use a little bit on your fingertips...you won't need much. You might find that it is 'perfect after a couple of weeks.

I had a similar experience but I loved my new cut (luckily).
I asked for 2 to 3 inches off, the hairdresser actually asked me to show her what my 2 to 3 inches looked like. Dutifully showed her with thumb and pointy finger.
Now her brain translated that to 6 or 7 inches. Ended up above my shoulder.
Another positive - my hair dye goes further
