Sudden hair loss

(49 Posts)

I wonder if anyone can help me find the thread about hair loss, where some posters said they had steroid injections or other treatments that worked and hair grew back
I have an appointment with the Dr on monday and would like to put some suggestions forward, as i am fully expecting her to say nothing will bring it back
I only noticed the bald patches recently and was shocked
I have had an itchy scalp, but also all over itching a few months ago, which i have read can contribute to hair loss in some cases, also did anyone else suffer itching
Thanks in advance

I did a search in the box at the top of the page, putting in 'hair loss steroid injection' and this thread appears to be the most likely. The posts by tessa101 and others mention the steroids injections.

Could it be an allergic reaction Blondenana
If you look very closely at any changes you might have made in toiletries, shampoo, make up and even medication - have there been significant changes? The itchy scalp and all over itching might suggest a connection.

Shysal and MawBroonsback thank you both for replies,i did a search, but didn;t think to put steroid injection
I haven;t used anything different as far as i can remember, and had forgotten about the itching until it started again yesterday, then i remembered going to my local chemist and asking if they had any ideas, they said no, but it was so bad it was driving me up the wall, then, not long after started itching all over, and woke up one morning with deep scratches on one arm
When i went to the Drs a few weeks ago she asked me if my head was itchy,i said no because i had forgotten about it from last year
I have another appointment on monday evening, so i am going to take all the info i have found,[printed it out] and see what she says
The main reason was lack of iron, as i am supposed to have a condition with iron overload i cant that being the reason, but on the other hand my ferritin has been much lower than it should be, and they keep asking me to have blood tests and venesections[a pint at a time taken]
Spoke to the consultants secretary yesterday and she says he said my iron is within range, that could be anything from 15ml to 100, in a certain amount of blood[not sure how much] but all i have read on iron being too low and causing hair loss says it should be no less than 70,
Also been feeling a bit dizzy and dozing off sometimes,
I have told her i am not having any more blood taken for a while, as my readings drop drastically but build slowly, i was supposed to see him last October but did not get an appointment, but was told yesterday i should have rung for one!
Thank you for the link, there were several posters mentioning this, even using steroid cream,

To be honest steriods wont regrow hair...i lost a lot of my hair through thyroid..took steriods just makes you fat!!!!!!! Get a wig and embrance what you may not change...

blondenana Fri 17-May-19 20:38:00

Lisa sorry you lost your hair too, the steroids that were mentioned in that ling were not oral, but injections and cream applied topically
I know oral steroids put weight on you, as my daughter had to take them for Crohns disease
I had my thyroid checked but it came back normal
I believe it could also be stress related, had 2 years of bad stress, although had lots of worse situations and not had this happen
Thanks for your input though

Lisa63 Fri 17-May-19 21:26:56

Sorry to hear about your daughter?...yes i guess oral steroids are more stronger....i hope you find a solution i know i did...hair topper that looks undetectable

blondenana Fri 17-May-19 21:34:38

Thank you Lisa, this was around 1985,she is fine now, had no problems for a long time

blondenana Sat 18-May-19 09:33:28

Lisa where can i buy the Topik? can you get it in Boots etc,i looked yesterday but couldn;t see any,or buy it online?
I will have to try that i think,
Next week i have 2 hospital appointments and dread sitting in a chair with someone looking at the top of my head

I wrote on the other hairloss thread, Ruth Langsford (of this morning) has posted on her Facebook page that she has lots of fine hair extensions to make her hair appear thicker, I wonder if this would be of help?
There are two hairdressers who specialise in thinning hair and hair loss. Lucinda Elleray in London, and Daniel Granger in Northampton. Daniel’s Facebook page is worth a look, it shows some of the transformations he’s achieved. I hope this is helpful.

Whingingmom i have seen those websites, but they are expensive,if you have money to spare its ok, if not what do you do?
I am back at the Drs on thursday, to see what my own Dr has to say
Thank you though

KatyK Tue 04-Jun-19 09:36:20

Exactly blondenana I have to pay for one of these expensive hair systems as I have total hair loss. Otherwise, as you say, there is little help. I hope your GP has something to offer you. Mine said 'get a wig' - and that from a lady doctor.

EllanVannin Tue 04-Jun-19 09:56:57

Mine has thinned a lot over the years and of late it's become more evident as the amount clogs up the hoover brushes and I have to cut through the twines of hair with scissors to release it. It used to be very thick and natural with it so curls and waves-----now it waves goodbye.
I do blame whatever medication is doing it but to see the hairbrush laden each morning isn't encouraging.

I've got long hair, worn up, and left the length because I felt that with a short cut and my hair " vanishing " that a short cut would emphasise the thinness of it whereas at least I still feel as though I have some hair left.

It only goes into curls when I've washed it but once dried and brushed, it becomes out of control frizz-----there's no body in it and this is what's lacking too.
Maybe if it was cut, the curl would remain ? I don't know.

I think mine might be stress related, and the itchyness might have something to do with it,
It is mainly underneath at the back, and my hair on top seems to hide it a bit, except when its windy and blows the top hair ,
I have searched for weeks ever since i first noticed it,
My daughter told me the other day that she noticed it ages ago, why didn;t she tell me? not to hurt my feelings i guess, but it might not have got as bad as it is now,if i could have done something about it,and i was horrified to think i have been going about with bald patches
As for what i have read about colouring it, it doesn;t contribute to hair loss
I have been taking Biotin, and my hair has grown fast, but i don;t think it is helping the loss
No good having it cut short as it would look worse,at least with it being longer on top it hides the bald patches up to a point

blondenana Tue 04-Jun-19 10:38:46

I posted on another thread about hair loss, that the makers of eye drops for eye pressure are testing to see if it can be used for hair loss too, as it does make eyelashes grow, and says not to get on skin as hair will grow there too,
Someone posted [cant remember who now] that she has to wax skin around eyes as hair is growing there too
I will post again the article about the testing, cant do links, so took a pic

KatyK Wed 05-Jun-19 13:25:30

There is going to be an item on This Morning next week re hair loss in women. I can't remember which day it said.

blondenana Wed 05-Jun-19 15:32:55

Oh i hope so,i will try to find out, probably monday if it has already been mentioned smile

Whingingmom Wed 05-Jun-19 17:22:58

It may be something called pityriasis- a yeast type organism which usually lives quite happily there but sometimes proliferates and causes itchy scalp, scaling and occasionally hair loss (it’s rather similar to the “thrush” organism some of us may be familiar with, but in a different area!)
It’s very easily treatable with ketaconazole (Nizoral) shampoo which is available over the counter or on prescription. Might be worth asking your GP or Pharmacist.

Boosgran Wed 05-Jun-19 22:27:50

Sorry just seen you had thyroid test and that it came back ‘normal’ you need to get the results of that test as what is normal for one is certainly not normal for another. You may be right at the bottom of the range and that is enough to give you symptoms. If you get a copy of your results let me know what they are. You need the numbers and ranges. Doctors that say thyroid is ‘normal ‘ are expressing an opinion and not a result. Doctors generally don’t know much about thyroid at all.

M0nica Wed 05-Jun-19 23:15:36

There are are so many causes for hair loss, so if possible get a referral to a dermatologist rather than rely on the GP sorting it out

A friend has just had this problem and when she saw the dermatologist he diagnosed her problem as a rare auto-immune condition, which her GP had not heard of.

blondenana Wed 05-Jun-19 23:43:59

Just seen all these replies thank you, i dont know if its possible to be notified of replies to posts in general, so i miss some,i know it is for PMs
Anyway i will see my own Dr tomorrow,
I know thyroid tests are not always accurate and the levels can change, but the first 2 women Drs i saw, didnt seem too interested
My own Dr is really very good usually and will go out of his way to help solve any health problems, so keeping my fiongers x, will update when i have been

blondenana Wed 05-Jun-19 23:45:28

Boosgran i have never been given copies of any tests, but i will ask

crazyH Wed 05-Jun-19 23:49:00

Blondenana.....if it's of any consolation, I developed 2 bald patches a few years ago (stress probably due to divorce) ....and it grew back within 6 months. It's called alopaecia areata. I'm not saying yours is the same, but it could be.

crazyH Wed 05-Jun-19 23:54:16

Btw, I don't remember much itching at all. It's only when somebody at work pointed it out to me that I noticed it. The problem hasn't returned, but now I make sure I use a mirror to check the back of my head, just in case .

blondenana Wed 05-Jun-19 23:58:52

I have looked up Pryriasis it is not that, as i have had no rash, just itching,
