Wedding dresses

Ours was a registry office wedding. I never wanted a white wedding as the thought of being the center of attention horrified me! We also had two babies already, so our wedding had to be a quick one so I could get back to feed the littlest.

So, instead, I’m posting a picture of my lovely maternal grandparents on their wedding day, 18th Sept, 1912

I was pregnant when I got married in 1969, got married in an orange and brown straight dress which covered the bump. Sometimes regretted not having the white dress but we didn't have much money - the marriage lasted anyway and the dress was useful for the next pregnancy!

Almost 11 years ago - I was 50. Marks and Spencer wedding dress - £70! My dressmaker mum was impressed with the quality and fit - good enough for me! My second marriage - no photos from the first.

We had the most lovely day

First wedding dress was hired - a lovely sparkly bodice with all the trimmings and veil, but it was early April 1971 and I was frozen! Second wedding I was in a pair of M&S burgundy pyjamas, a short fake fur jacket and burgundy shoes that were too small for me. (And I was frozen again. It was January and on my birthday).
Neither marriage lasted, sadly, so maybe there was a lesson for me to learn there, but I and I don't intend to go through another charade, even in the height of summer!

We were married in the local register office, as I didn't want the hoo-ha that usually went with a white wedding.

My dress was made by my grandmother who was a tailor. It was mustard coloured, loosely fitted and had gold threading through it. As it was a winter wedding, I wore a mustard coat over it with fox fur collar. Long hair 'done up' which, on reflection, didn't suit me. Come to think of it, neither did the colours... I used to think I was 'Autumn' colouring. Now I would go for spring or summer colours.

Anyway, that was over 50 years ago, and still going strong so something must have been right.

I made mine, and my bridesmaids dresses. Married in October 1975 age 21.

Nearly 61 years ago, how styles change.
For the better I think.

Here is mine 1978. It was given to me by a friend who had been married 5 years earlier. My grandma had offered to buy my wedding dress, so she gave me money instead. I bought a washing machine, much more long term use than a dress.

Here’s mine...1974! I remember going to buy it, on my own, in my lunch hour from work! Very different when my daughter was married...choosing fabric, fittings adjustments etc etc!

Me and my Dad March 1957. Been married twice again after the first attempt - and all Gemini men! What does that say about me ??? The dress was "Ballerina" style, mid-calf length, with a Lace "Bolero" and I loved it.

I was married in 1946. Still needed clothing coupons then so just wore an ordinary turquoise dress for the quick register office wedding. Both hard up as we had both been in the Forces. Very happy marriage for forty three years until he sadly died.

This is a lovely post. Beautiful photos especially the one from 1912, which was the year after my Granny's wedding. No photo from then, so loved seeing what was the style. Still figuring out how to post a photo here.

I got married in short white lace dress along with white ankle boots and bonnet. This was in 1966 so strongly influenced by Mary Quant! I'll post a picture when I've found it and worked out how to do it!

Me in 1985 when I still had plenty hair! Made my own dress and was still sewing the flowers on and stitching the hem the night before, after the rehearsal! Marriage lasted almost 19 years but divorced now.

Mine was made by my mother in law,Who also made the maid of honour dress,bridesmaids dresses and pageboy outfits,I bought the material from Debenhams and got staff discount,as I worked there at the time,married in 1976 at the end of the heatwave

It was January 2nd and snow on the ground. The dress was velvet so I was warm but I’m not sure how the guests were feeling!
