Evening dress for overweight daughter

My gorgeous stepdaughter is coming on holiday with hubby and me later this year, along with my sis in law and another couple. We're cruising and there will be several formal evenings for which we all intend dressing up.

My stepdaughter is around 5 foot tall and at least a dress size 26. She's on a tight budget but wants to get a couple of nice dresses for formal wear. We have said we'll buy her a dress and she understandably want to look her best but is finding it extremely difficult to find something that looks nice on her.

I've said to emphasise her best features and that the most important thing is that she's comfortable but I'm at a loss to advise on actual style.

I'd love to take her shopping and have a girly day out, trying on etc but she lives at the other end of the country (UK) and we won't be able to get together until the holiday. She's sending me photos of her in dresses but it's clear they don't suit her and she's desperately unhappy. She's not a confident girl but is so lovely and doesn't realise how gorgeous she is.

She's quite lumpy and bumpy around the belly area which is the main problem.

Any advise?

Chesca has some lovely forgiving linen dresses but only goes to a size 24.If she can drop just one size that might work. They aren’t cheap but do often come up in the sale. I have a couple of Chesca dresses and have worn them “dressed up” and also for “everyday”. Also, my daughter likes them so not all just for oldies!
Or, maybe she might like some “Lagenlook” styles - just Google it and lots will come up.

Taking in the fact your DD cannot get to slimmingworld classes would she consider their on line classes and support far better for her than Cambridge Diet and less expensive.
With regard to clothes for the cruise Box2 have some lovely selections wide trousers and longer loose tops and dress style coats all matched with scarves if you wish.
Just make sure you don't go for sleeveless tops or dresses as this will draw attention to her upper body being overweight but she may have slimmed down by then.

Sadly, NotAGran55 Masai, though lovely, are quite a bit too small.

That's the kind of style I was meaning, rather than a dress glammanana.

I have always been plump, and I go for silky trousers, and either tunic tops or a sleeveless shell with a floaty shirt.
Another useful tip is to get a sleeveless dress and put that kind of shirt over it.
For the set up you are describing, I would get from somewhere like Yours or Simply Be, a pair of black lightweight trousers, and a couple of shell tops (1 black) and from a market stall or similar, a black or silvery 'pashmina', then buy as many bright floaty shirts as the budget will allow. Try to add a striking necklace (ask relatives, look in charity shops).
I always take on holiday a 2 metre, 140cm wide piece of habutai silk, in a dramatic colour. I wrap it around me at the pool / sea and use it as a scarf / shawl in the evening.
And always remember that 'nobody's perfect'!!! Hope you all have great time.

Nanarose That's what I did. A long straight dress (but with stretch) and floaty long shirt over. They have reasonable ones in Bon Marche and George Asda (sometimes sold as beach cover up shirts). They also look good with linen or stretch silky trousers and pretty cami, plus a statement necklace.

J. D. Williams sell some beautiful evening wear. Evans or even Bon Marche all sell her size.
I am a similar shape and would go for an empire line dress.

How about her finding a dressmaker near at hand? My friend uses one near us, and just takes along pictures of styles she likes, and the lady has always made something to suit.

I think her weight is her business. I hope everybody enjoys the holiday.

Black trousers and a long floaty top, always a smart choice. Advise, rounder ladies look well in spankz.

Daffydilly I googled evening dresses size 26 and loads came up. Debenhams have some really nice dresses at quite reasonable prices. www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Navigate?storeId=10701&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&lid=%2F%2Fproductsuniverse%2Fen_GB%2Fproduct_online%3DY%2Finsearch%3D1%2Fcategories%3C%7Bproductsuniverse_18661%7D%2Fcategories%3C%7Bproductsuniverse_18661_3074457345617169319%7D%2Frange%3E%7Bevening%7D%2Fwomens_size%3E%7B26%7D
She probably has lovely curvy arms and shoulders so get something that shows off her best bits, She might like a fake tan first so she feels more confident.

If she has long legs, leggings and a floaty top looks great - and high, but not vertiginous, heels give height and make legs look slimmer.

This dress is only £7.50 on Debenhams and could go from sightseeing to evening with accessories
