What counts as “old lady clothes” nowadays?

I need the brilliance and sharp eyes of Gransnet! As I approach Birthday No..
61 , I worry more about dressing like an ”old lady”.
I’m aware that many clothing choices that look normal to me look old fashioned to my daughters.
It was ages before I realised my jeans were the “Wrong” length for example.
Is there anyone here with a keener fashion sense than mine who has a list of no-go looks that scream “EIGHTIES”?

Sparklefizz
I'm very tempted by the 'Tay shrug'

Sparklefizz Tue 10-Sept-19 20:10:55

Actually petra that shrug might look quite nice if worn with other clothes, eg. some black cigarette pants and a nice pair of black heeled boots which would give a completely different shape, but the outfit that has been put together in the pic is 'orrible, in my opinion. But then, what do I know? Not a lot!

Cropped white chinos teamed with an oversized floral top and gold sandals. So many large older ladies seem to favour this combo and it’s not a good look.

Pop socks worn under skirts / dresses !

I'm 72 and currently wearing a very jazzy multi-coloured jersey over a bright orange polo neck with a black skirt. My hair is pale green and I'm wearing an embroidered pill-box hat and long, rainbow socks.

I wear this lot, and other fairly unconventional things not because I'm 72 but because I like them and don't give a flying fig what anyone else thinks is fashionable.

Bradfordlass

Somehow that doesn’t surprise me!

There’s no hope for me, I bought a pair of jeans at Bon Marche yesterday and signed up for their loyalty card. I think a cross-body bad is much safer (and less ageing) than a blooming great solid leather handbag carried on one’s wrist like Mrs Thatcher did. Probably get lynched for this but judging by how many of us wear a poncho maybe they should be classed as old lady’s wear.

Not this

annodomini Wed 11-Sept-19 10:17:53

What's wrong with purple? Where did your mum get her purple fleece trousers, discodiva? They sound just the thing for those cold winter mornings.wink
At 78 I like to coordinate what I'm wearing; dislike clashing accessories. I admit to having a bright red cross-body bag - so much easier to manage if you are also trying to cope with an umbrella and a walking stick. Also a matter of security. I have to wait for winter weather to wear my red suede boots; love my red loafers, but I've a swelling on my left instep and they're not so comfortable now. sad I don't indulge in my teenage GD's fad - unmatched socks. Well, not intentionally.

According to Colour people everyone can wear purple. If certainly suits me and I'm not an old lady - I'm only 70 for goodness sake!

Beige (under many pseudonyms) seems to be on the list too this winter.

Where what you want with joy and who cares what others think. This thread seems very Hyacinth Bucket and she always tried too hard. Perhaps that is what we are seeing here too.

GracesGranMK3 Wed 11-Sept-19 10:47:20

wear where

Alexa Wed 11-Sept-19 11:56:58

Is beige the same as oatmeal?

BradfordLass72 Wed 11-Sept-19 20:28:57

Amost everything sold by Dale & Waters sad

Cropped white chinos teamed with an oversized floral top and gold sandals. So many large older ladies seem to favour this combo and it’s not a good look.

That's a contradiction in terms. It must be a good look if "so many large, older ladies seem to favour this".

Or were you meaning you don't like to look at the ladies wearing this style? In the same way people say, 'She shouldn't be wearing those trousers"

There's an obvious answer to that.

Sara65 Wed 11-Sept-19 20:41:51

I love purple, and hate beige, but if you love beige, wear it!

I think we’re all old enough to make up our own minds.

BradfordLass72 Thu 12-Sept-19 06:41:29

Alexa

No.
Beige is what you wear.
Oatmeal is what you eat.

I love purple, always have.
I LOVE yellow but if I wear that colour top I look dead - could be useful one day I suppose grin

Marydoll Thu 12-Sept-19 07:23:16

I would be delighted to look like this in my Old lady look poncho wink grin

Alexa Thu 12-Sept-19 10:16:13

"Beige is what you wear.
Oatmeal is what you eat."

Bradford Lass I get Oatly instead of cow milk .It's great!

Lisagran Thu 12-Sept-19 10:32:40

I use Oatly too Alexa - and if you spill it on beige slacks, it blends in well grin

alikay Thu 12-Sept-19 12:10:24

Beige or grey anoraks and those shapeless embroidered T shirts that are worn loose over a skirt or trousers. I actually have an example of each in my wardrobe, but have caught myself before going out in them!

Sara65 Thu 12-Sept-19 12:16:50

Just ordered some lovely purple clothes from Sahara, gorgeous colours this season

MawB Thu 12-Sept-19 15:28:18

I do think that wishy washy “timid” colours are especially ageing.
Someone I have met recently who I know must be in her 70’s looked fantastic that first day in black skinny jeans, black suede ankle boots, a bright red jacket and a black “baker boy” cap. Next time I saw her she was wearing a greeny grey jumper and just looked 10 years older ?

Grammaretto Thu 12-Sept-19 15:58:37

I now know what old lady clothes are!
I bid on Ebay for a gilet to wear in my icy house in the winter. I bid for 4 but the only one I won? and paid £2 for plus postage, has arrived.
Oh dear. It's padded nylon with shiny buttons in pastel blue. Exc con. Deffo OLC.
I swear it looked darker in the photo.
I think other bidders were more discerning. Still, I'll take it into the charity shop to find its next home.

Grammaretto Thu 12-Sept-19 16:08:32

I've just looked at Sahara Sara65 .There's nothing under £100!
No wonder this poor pensioner has never been in.
It may have wonderful service and lovely fabrics but I'll just have to make do with my finds at charity shops and TKmax grin

Lessismore Thu 12-Sept-19 17:11:52

I saw a lady today.....size 16 ish , wearing 3/4 length wide black trousers, a white top an a navy cardigan, a red scarf knotted round her neck....oh and flat pumps. It looked great.

Grammaretto, the money people spend on clothes is astounding.
