What counts as “old lady clothes” nowadays?

I need the brilliance and sharp eyes of Gransnet! As I approach Birthday No..
61 , I worry more about dressing like an ”old lady”.
I’m aware that many clothing choices that look normal to me look old fashioned to my daughters.
It was ages before I realised my jeans were the “Wrong” length for example.
Is there anyone here with a keener fashion sense than mine who has a list of no-go looks that scream “EIGHTIES”?

Sara65 did make me giggle with her definition! My friends and I call it the * insert name of local shopping centre* look, and vow we’ll never wear it, but you never know! She did miss out the wee shoulder bag worn diagonally across the body.
However, I say wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in, but nowadays both age and weight loss have led me to prefer clothes with sleeves.

I find some things in Cotton Traders more than acceptable (not all though). I love their trousers as the cut suits me well but, only the ones that do up properly, not the ‘pull-on’ ones.

Here you are a pinny and a mop cap!

I was driving back from the supermarket this afternoon and drove past an old couple and I MEMORISED their outfits to relay to you!

Matching fleeces BUT one in red and one in blue. Both wearing beige trousers. Both wearing trainers. She had a cross body bag. Old.

Yes! Cotton traders and Seasalt. SLIGHTLY worried because I liked a couple of Seasalt bits this summer. It's a slippery slope.

Long white hair up in a French pleat or pigtails very old lady.
Pleated tartan skirt with blouse and cardigan.

maddy47 Congrats on getting the jeggings on In the first place.

Yes, I think so Sarahcyn.

Gonegirl Sat 07-Sept-19 18:28:26

I had a maternity smock glamma. I really liked it. I think it's a shame they don't wear them nowadays. Feminine.

eazybee Sat 07-Sept-19 18:32:55

Summer clothes, because they are usually years old and out of date because they have had so little wear: flowing denim skirts, wide linen trousers and smock tops.

My contemporaries (and me) seem to share a uniform, usually from Seasalt, Boden, Crew & co, WhiteStuff, Mistral: narrow jeans, linen shirts, striped tops, gilets and loafers, or the current moshulu sandals. At one reading group meeting seven of us sported striped tops. This uniform is also standard for Waitrose shopping.

I'm 70 and I wear whatever I like. Skinny jeans, suede ankle boots with a heel, anything that takes my fancy. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror and think 'what were you thinking?' I bought a shirt recently and my very fashion conscious teenage granddaughter went out and bought the same one.

Daisymae Sat 07-Sept-19 18:58:51

Well having looked at the list I have to confess to: fleece, dresses with white cardi and the odd pair of comfort shoes but I think that I am quite up to date! On the whole that is.

Sara65 Sat 07-Sept-19 19:13:38

I don’t think I’ve ever been exactly fashionable, so I don’t really feel I need to be now, but I like nice clothes, and I don’t want to look old ladyish yet.
My oldest daughter and I often unknowingly buy the same items, a bit grungy/hippyish, my younger is strictly what I think of as the Jack Wills look, wouldn’t be caught dead in our clothes.

mrsmopp Sat 07-Sept-19 19:18:18

Blouses. Crimplene. Droopy cardigans. Quilted anoraks. Headscarves. Permed hair. Stockings.

mrsmopp Sat 07-Sept-19 19:21:36

Twinsets from Edinburgh Woollen Mill, worn with a nice brooch and pearls and a matching tartan skirt.

M0nica Sat 07-Sept-19 19:30:42

mrsmopp so old fashioned it is now trendily retro. Added fawn lisle stockings and sensible lace-up shoes and you are right up to the minute

I'm very sorry but how do you actually live with yourself posting stuff like this?

Some of the most decent people I have ever met have the least and wear cheap, ill fitting clothes.

SpringyChicken Sat 07-Sept-19 20:03:33

Sweatshirts (not hoodies) embroidered with flowers and butterflies

M0nica Sat 07-Sept-19 20:19:49

Oh no it isn't. I shop in Waitrose, because it is a town centre shop and more convenient than the big out of town one and not only have I never have worn any of the clothes listed by eazybee, I cannot remember seeing any other customers dressed like that in there either. We are essentially as mixed a bunch of dressers as you would expect to see in any supermarket.

Sara65 Sat 07-Sept-19 20:23:01

I’ve been to Waitrose today in my long toast dress and flip flops.

GabriellaG54 Sat 07-Sept-19 21:54:41

Good Gawd Gonegirl...it's dreadful.

GabriellaG54 Sat 07-Sept-19 22:01:33

I think Lessismore is trying to be controversial, as per.....
I shop at a large Waitrose virtually 6 days a week and her description of their average shopper is laughable and I have shopped in the Canary Wharf store plenty of times and never seen anyone fitting that description.
Would anyone really want to turn up to a meeting and find 6 striped clones?
??

MissAdventure Sat 07-Sept-19 22:05:29

A swarm of bees!

SparklyGrandma Sat 07-Sept-19 22:12:11

I think too casual an outfit, baggy with wear, can age a woman eg trainers, leggings or trackers, puffs coat or jacket..

M&S had some lovely linen dresses this summer but the neckline V was too deep for me.

I prefer stylish, plain colours, linen Gabor shoes, single breasted raincoat or coat. Clean lines, not too much clutter and no stripes. Good haircut.

No dark colours either, I used to hide in black about 15 years ago.

But every woman has her own style.

Lessismore Sat 07-Sept-19 22:16:58

not " virtue signaling" or being controversial "as per".....but many many people would find the prices of Boden et al totally and utterly out of their range, let alone a trip to Waitrose.

Honestly, I just don't care anymore , if you have £60 to spend on a stripey tee shirt, great.
